23 Feb 10 Worldwide cellphone sales in 2009: same as 2008
According to a report made by Gartner, Inc. the worldwide mobile phone sales to users in 2009 was close to 1.211 billion, which is not a lot when comparing to the previous year of 2008. Actually it is worse, because it noticed a decline of 0,9% when comparing the 2 years.
On the other hand, the 4th quarter of 2009 was pretty good in terms of sales, because when comparing to 2008 the increase was a lot – 8,3%.
Carolina Milanesi of Gartner, comments:
In 2009, smartphone-focused vendors like Apple and Research In Motion (RIM) successfully captured market share from other larger device producers, controlling 14.4 and 19.9 per cent of the worldwide smartphone market, respectively.

I’m interested to see how much of an impact does signing with a certain carrier have to do with these figures (ie. being tied in a 2 year contract).
