01 Mar 10 Wind Up Mobile Phone Charger / Torch Review–Terrific For Emergencies

So the folks out at Mobilefun sent me an interesting little tool, the Wind Up Mobile Phone Charger / Torch. The fact that they call it “torch” instead of “flashlight” only serves to indicate that this comes from Europe, though chances are all my European readers right now are mocking me for calling it a “flashlight” to begin with.  But regardless of what you call it, it’s two very simple things in one.

It’s a three-LED flashlight powered by a hand-crank dynamo, but that would mean nothing to us here if it weren’t for one critical distinction–it also comes with a panoply of plugs (ten different kinds all told) to hook this hand-crank dynamo into your cell phone for use as a mobile recharger that you can power yourself.  It’s compatible with a wide array of phones, including the Nokia 6230, the LG Chocolate, the Motorola V3, and several others.

Yes, folks, having this in your car or on your key chain or whatever–and it’s really not that big a charger as you can see in the picture–you can now generate instant power for your cell phone.  Of course, it’ll take a LOT of cranking to charge your battery back to full, but for those times when you need just enough juice for one call, well, you could definitely do much worse.  And failing that, you’d be especially surprised at how bright this tiny little flashlight can be.

As an emergency tool, the Wind Up Mobile Phone Charger from Mobilefun, which weighs in at about twenty bucks all told, makes a whole lot of sense to have on hand.

The Good

Incredibly compact

Great in emergencies

The flashlight is supremely effective

The Bad

Power yielded is extremely low
