WD GreenPower Caviar 1TB Power-Saving Hard Drive
More green power. Western Digital today unveiled its environmentally friendly GreenPower series of desktop/enterprise/CE and external portable hard drives. The GreenPower lineup includes drives in capacities ranging from 320GB to 1TB.
Thanks to Energy Star 4.0 compliance and some state of the art technology, the new drives save as much as 40% in hard drive power consumption (roughly $10 per drive per year according to WD). The GreenPower series was designed primarily with power savings in mind.
The WD Caviar GP is one of the first drives - a 1 terabyte monster - to take advantage of the new technology. It will be available in July for storage appliances, while the 1TB desktop version will ship in August 2007.
New technologies in the GreenPower platform include:
- IntelliPower: A fine-tuned balance of spin speed, transfer rate and cache size designed to deliver both significant power savings and solid performance.
- IntelliPark: Delivers lower power consumption by automatically unloading the heads during idle to reduce aerodynamic drag.
- IntelliSeek: Calculates optimum seek speeds to lower power consumption, noise and vibration.
