22 Oct 09 USB 3.0 Chipsets to Arrive Only in 2011

In case you are waiting for Intel to launch USB 3.0 chipsets then we have some really bad news for you. Although the new USB standard has been official for quite a while, Intel will apparently start delivering those USB 3.0 chipsets only in 2011.

Various manufacturers have already started making USB 3.0 gadgets which we won’t be able to enjoy in the near future. According to inside sources “tech and strategy groups [at Intel] are not always aligned with the product development teams that are in the mode of trying to make revenue and prioritize what to integrate.”

In other words there’s no point in buying USB 3.0 devices just yet since it will take two years until Intel starts offering USB 3.0 chipsets to the masses. What do you say folks, is this fair to us? Aren’t we entitled to USB 3.0 speeds?

Oh how I love the monopolistic games that Wintel are playing with us. First, spend years shoveling the hype to end users about SuperSpeed. Then tell slightly different (fractured) tales to each company in the USB/IF. Next, convince Microsoft that USB 3.0 support is not needed until it shows up in Intel’s SouthBridge. Then announce that the SouthBridge schedule has slipped another year.

For end users, this is a complete disaster. No driver support for USB 3.0 until 2011 means that there will be many crappy third party driver stacks proliferated. The fastest way to a bluescreen may well be USB 3.0.
