According to a survey conducted in Japan on 402 subjects with ages from 20 to 49, the average Japanese cell phone owner doesn’t intend to buy a 3G iPhone. Or better said, didn’t intend to buy one. This study, conducted by iSHARE, was taken on June 5th and 6th, that’s three days before the WWDC where Steve Jobs revealed the 3G iPhone and it’s pricing structure. That’s why it showed that 91% of those interviewed weren’t interested in the new iPhone.
I would assume that if taken now, the same study will show a decreased percentage. The killer price makes the iPhone 2 a very affordable cell phone. Sure on the long run you are likely to pay more than $2000 on the device itself and all the necessary activation plans, but it is affordable. Because of this reason alone I would expect a drop from that stunning 91%.
How big a drop? Well considering that Apple is blamed for not really taking the iPhone to the next level, there will be some people who wouldn’t want to choose this iPhone version and would rather wait for a third one.
One more interesting number from this survey is the percentage of people using Softbank Mobile Corporation: just 22.9% of those interviewed were Softbank clients. This is the carrier who will bring the iPhone to Japan when it arrives.
Ok iSHARE, get ready for one more survey after July 11th.
