After being blocked last week by local government officials, the low income prepaid communication project has finally pushed through. SafeLink Wireless will serve as the company’s distribution of Lifeline - a U.S. government supported program for income eligible households that ensures telephone service is available and affordable for eligible low-income households.
The SafeLink Wireless service will provide eligible low-income households a free cell phone, mobile access to emergency services and free 68 minutes of air time, monthly, for one year.
The cell phone offers in-demand features:

Error on online application for SafeLink Wireless
rapcitytwo@yahoo.com. How else may I apply? Robert
I have try to apply for safe link on line but my application was not process because I meet two of the requirements
ok
In new york, safelink provides 68 minutes Per Month…the only one making out on this program is Tracfone & Safelink!
How in the world will 68 minutes help the low income family?
Tracfone will recieve money for the price of the phone & collect for the worth-less monthly minutes!
You can buy any cheap Pre-Paid phone, activate it free once, buy $10.00 airtime, use the minutes, and you will still be able to reach 911 for help.
THIS IS ANOTHER TAX-PAYER RIP-OFF!
Hey Tom Mc, I’d love to know where you can find $10.00 airtime cards in New York. Most of the stores charge more than that for their cards.
Besides, 68 minutes may be enough if the cell phone isn’t your primary phone, and you’re not someone who spends ungodly amounts of time on a cell phone texting and all that junk.
What you fail to state is that more minutes can be added each month if you buy TracFone cards. So when you think about it, low income families are getting a free TracFone cell phone with 68 free starter minutes EACH MONTH. Compare that with a regular TraceFone customer who has to BUY the phone and BUY *ALL* of their minutes (they won’t be getting 68 free EACH month to start them off).
i find this extremely disturbing why not give the poor a car, insurance gas money etc we dont want them to not have the advantages us tax paying folks have. maybe we could hook them directly to the employment centers and the 68 free minutes could be used for a worthy cause. it is a great deal if you can get it
I did not receve the minutes this month.
I miss place my phone at the begining of the month therefore it was not on in order for the minutes to go on.
From what I know, Safelink airtime cards are only available at CVS stores on Florida for now. Phoneman has a point. Safelink Wireless cell phones are intended for low-income users who need these devices for communication in emergency situations.
If you use up all the minutes you can buy TracFone airtime cards, if you are not in Florida. Buying the 60-minute airtime card ($19.99) gives you extra 40 bonus minutes, while the 120-minute airtime card ($29.99) gives you extra 30 bonus minutes.
The number of minutes issued each month depends on the zip code where the phone is usually used. You need to make sure that the phone is powered on during the 1st 3 days of each month. If that doesn’t work: 1) Go to Prepaid, press Select. 2) Go to Add Airtime, press select. 3) Enter 555 on the screen that asks for an airtime PIN.
Try doing that, before calling customer service. It wastes your time, and it bothers the customer service agent. And make an effort to read the user’s guide for the basic operations of the phone, please!
For misplaced/lost/stolen phones, just call the customer service toll-free number 1-800-378-1684 and report the issue.
Any questions?
HOW DO I GET THE FREE PHONE FROM THE SAFELINK GROVMENT
To LAVADA MCCLURE:
You can apply at http://www.safelinkwireless.com or call 1-800-977-3768 to enroll. For handset issues, you can reach them at 1-800-378-1684. Note that you have to pass certain qualifications.
It is not a tax payer funded program.the universial survice fund pays it.ppl who pay phone bills pay for it
Why would someone think that if you qualify for this service, you do not pay taxes? I’ve worked and paid taxes; federal, state and local for a number of decades and because I qualify under one of the many programs listed you assume I don’t pay taxes? How ignorant can one be? I got rid of my cell phone last year as a way to cut expenses. I have raised 2 children to adulthood, have 1 young son at home and a granddaughter I am still raising. Having this phone in the car in case of an emergency would be a security measure and a blessing. It’s the only time I have actually missed having a cell. All is not black and white in this world.
Wow ! I became disabled and not by my choice did I wish to not work. I thank God everyday just to be alive. I have paid my way and for over 4 yrs asked for nothing. Sorry to say I then had to ask for help. You say oh this is a money making thing. Think, someone has a job because of it ! And I can now hear my grandson’s voice once in a while ! So I say thank you to these companies and to Mr. Obama. And if for just once this program is not abused or distroyed by people who have no idea what it is really all about. Tomorrow someone will still have a job !!!
how do i get a hold of safelink wireless. i have filled out a app. on line but it keeps rejecting it, it says my address is not found. and i am not using a p.o. box. please help me .
I am a single mother with a premature baby.. This is the best thing they could have came out with. For the person that said the tax payers are paying for this. Wait til you can’t work anymore and you need safe links help.
The whole thing sounds great but when applying.. i don’t like the fact i have to give away my Social Security Number through the interenet.
this taken me to other pages
To michele o:
It could be that Safelink is not yet available in your area. They are still on the process of expanding to other states. Try calling their customer service no. and ask if they are offering service in your area.
Dave is right. The fund for the program come from the universal service fund you may find on your phone bill.
By the way, Safelink Wireless has been established before the US presidential elections. So, it may not be accurate to imply that it is Obama’s project.
Safelink phones can also get additional minutes from TracFone promo codes. You can check the ongoing promos at http://www.tracfone.com. You need to purchase an airtime card to use a certain promo code.
Claudia, you do not give out your social security number, you post the last four digits
I am an educated person with many years working in a professional field. I went to part-time work when my autistic son needed me more at home. I am also a single parent who had to leave a abusive situation to protect myself and my son.
I Thank GOD for this program. My son can reach me if he gets lost or needs help. Thank you Safelink !
i didn’t recieve my free monthly minutes
I just filed out an app for safelink and I qualified for it I am so happy because i’m not getting enough work time and I have to pay bills also I have a daughetr and a baby on the way this is such an excitement I am so happy because I decided not to get a phone to save money and a blessing just came down and touched me thank god! for free cell phone… 80 min a month is better than nothing… I can also call the babysitter and check on my lil one thank god! ..BLESSING…
i applied and was approved in minutes. It will be a great help as i am stuck at home with a broken neck. Unable to work at this point and we all know the horror story of waiting on disability approval. “cb” needs to realize not everybody uses the welfare system to avoid work. I wish with all i am that i could return to my work, but at this point i am happy to be alive. Thank you Safelink
im glad to have safelink my fiance works very hard while i raise our beautiful babies until i can go to work. leaving the house isnt safe when u have two kids and especially where i live im glad i can reach him if anything happens to my kids or myself this is a blessing for emergencys.
I heard about this on the radio this morning and I just applied and was approved, I am out of work due to having chronic back pain and I can’t afford to keep monthly minutes on a cell phone, and I am not one of those people who has a cell phone glued to my ear either, I would like to have one for emergencies when I am out and an emergency my happen or I am alone and my need help. Thanks!
i apply and i call to safelink then they say i am eligible and that they going to send me the phone in 5 day but then i call again and they say no i dont process i am lost can someone help me to know if i am eligible
why is it that every time I put mt current address on the safe link cell phone application it saying that it is the wrong address what should I do know I can not apply??? is there a number I may call???
Reply to cb, who said: “I find this extremely disturbing why not give the poor a car, insurance, etc”
Apparently you haven’t heard the news from Massachusetts. They are doing just that.
‘Access to Jobs’ will pay for insurance, vehicle registration, title, inspection, AAA membership, excise tax, and approved repairs for one year. Clients must show pay stubs as proof that they are still employed to get these extra benefits.

having problem finding safelink cards at cvs
I jsut got a prepaid tracphone-I know minutes are used when I call out.Does it use minuites if someone calls me?
When did the government decide a cell phone is a necessity? Good grief, another reason I am in such a high tax bracket. To most of you who posted here- you’re welcome. Now I have to get back to work so the government can give you more things to keep you dependent. Go, Obama- go socialism…
I am so happy that the government is doing this, I do work and I have 2 children and I pay all of my own bills and everything and could not afford a phone. I live in the middle of nowhere in Pa, and I am by myself with 2 little girls, not having a phone was really scary out here I only qualify for the phone because my children are on the health insurance program, I could get food stamps and all of that but i chose to do it on my own. This phone is a gift from god, I can make Dr’s appt.s for my kids now without borrowing someone else’s phone and I can keep in touch with my family who lives out of state. Thank you safelink!
To all the people that are complaining about free safe link phones, chew on this. Your constant complainging about “us tax payers” and this program, well we are a tax paying household. So get bent!! This phone allows us to have an emergency phone in our car so if something were to happen either my wife or I can call to get help. Being a 2 parent working family with one car it has proven itself useful more than once. I thank the government for this phone because we didn’t really have the extra money to purchase the extra phone little esle pay for the phone cards!! To all the complainers, SHUT UP!!
OMG!!! Its just a tracfone. you would think they were giving away Blackberries with free internet, email, IM, games and apps, ringtones, bluetooth and everything else a phone can do. Besides you would have to be poor to even want a tracfone. If someone is signing up for a tracfone with 68 minutes a month, trust me they must really need it.
Is this a real program? My computer keeps alerting me its a fraud website. Safelinkwireless.com
im sorry to say this peaple but you dont need a goverment cell phone service. If we keep giving these peaple hand outs they will never do for them self. sorry a phone is not a need its a want and im sorry if you have internet to post a comment on using this “safelink” service im sorry you dont need it. they need to take the money from this service and use it for helping peaple who need help. jest remeber we cant keep giving to these peaple or the’ll keep pumping out kids cunsuming food, fual & goverment resources that peaple willing to ferther them self need. stop suporting these peaple, fight safelink.
well i was approved the same day and it has been 7 days already they say 2 wait 10 days so if i dont get it by monday then i shall call. also its only a free phone with 68 minuteds people like my grandparents hoo never use a cell phone it would be a blessing for them they dont qualify unfortuneatly my gramma only uses the cell phone when she leaves my grandfather at home when she goes to the store and they also use it hwen they go to cleveland for any doc. appointments and she maybe uses 10 minutes if that a month and when ever her card expires she has to buy a calling card for 20 bucks and thats the cheapest card for track phone and thats expensive if they could quailify for this program it would save them 20.00 every 3 months thats 80 for an entire year they could use that 80 for medications for my grandfather. and any phone company can and does offer free phones with a contract would u rather get a free phone from the governemtn or pay for a 2 year contract for a free phone? i mean quit complaining for god sakes people with disabilities ned it
I completely disagree with you, ELDER. I am a LOW INCOME COLLEGE STUDENT who works full time and goes to school at night but I do not have enough money to pay for a pricey cell phone bill every month. However, having a cell phone IS a necessity. On top of being a college student, I am a woman. Leaving my classes at 10/11 at night is not always the safest of times to be walking through a parking garage alone. By Tracfone offering this plan, I was able to get a cell phone on the Safelink plan and now I feel much safer knowing that I can call for help with the push of a button. So you see…it’s not only “these people” that you referred to who need this great government resource.
I was approved. I was married, had 4 kids. Household yr income WAS 100-120k a year. Then our life changed. Hubby was murdered. I was 7 months pregnant. Real Estate market crashed. Lost our house. Rental Houses and car. Now I need help. Not a hand out, but help to figure out how I will get back on my feet, alone with 4 kids, three of which know the so called good life they had. I know there are people who take programs like this and abuse them but for us that don’t this is a blessing. An answered prayer.
If you thin a cell phone is not a need then just imagine getting up, seeing your kids off to school and your baby off to daycare. Now you are in a car off to look for work. What if something happened and the school or daycare needed you. How would they call if there is NO phone? What if you found yourself with a flat tire on the side of a road and it is almost time for the kids to come home and you can’t be there, how would you call for help or to get someone to your home intime to meet the kids? If you think passer by’s stop to help nowa days you are wrong!!!! People need to think before they judge.
Thank you SafeLink
I have the safe link phone and the screen has got busted (it was droped ) How would I go about getting it replaced?
Thanks Jennifer
this is to Jennifer. I was told they will replace it if it gets broke. Also if you want to use a different track phone and switch everything over you call them and they will help switch over the minuets and phone number. You should be able to just get another free phone from them. give them a call
all i have to say is THANK YOU SAFELINK WIRELESS - THANK YOU!
I lost my job and my phone along with it. I hit rock bottom. I went to go apply for some other jobs and because i had no phone i was never even considered for hire. I now have a safelink phone and successfully landed a job.
I just applied online for a Safelink phone and was instantly approved me with in minutes. Thank-you
For all the people complaining about the phones: If getting a FREE phone with FREE minutes is not enough, DONT APPLY! This goes to show how unappreciative people really are! This is not a phone that u just sit up and run ur mouth on, its not called SAFELINK for nothing. U figure it out! I love getting my free 68 minutes a month! THANKS SAFELINK!
Not everyone can afford a Blackberry!!!!!
Safelink rocks…
[...] Wireless Inc. has announced the launch of SafeLink Wireless in Illinois, bringing low income households a cost-efficient telephone service. The Safelink [...]
I recieved an email stating that additional Safelink mins can be purchased for $3.00….I have called every merchant that is supposed to be participating in this program but none of them are participating.
I live in Florida, can anyone give me some information on where and how to purchase these additional minutes
The program just became available here in Illinois and I already applied and qualified. The phone should be arriving in about a week, and I have to say, I am excited. I had to cut off my previous line because I just couldn’t afford to keep up with the prepaid minutes that were required every month, and when i did buy them, they ended up going to waste because I never used them. From my understanding, with this plan, I will receive 68 free minutes a month and a free phone. And if I need more minutes, I can always buy. In reality though, I just need this phone for emergencies and for checking up on my sister. I am not sure how or where to buy additional minutes, but if I find out, I will make sure to post the info.
I would say I hope lost my phone and say it wasnt stolen, what is the process for a replacement.
I’ve been quite pleased with the value provided by Virgin Mobile. I purchased a TNT phone for $12, with a coupon. I only have to pay $20 every 3 months to keep it activated (boils down to $6.67 a month). Running on the Sprint backbone, my VM phone has great coverage and quality in all of the areas I work (Chicagoland, and up and down the east coast). I don’t use it very often, so this suits my needs perfectly. IMO, its a pretty good deal for anyone on a tight budget or frugal penny-pinchers like me.
I live in a apartment building of over 55years old people. I know that most of the senior in my building do not have cell phone when they go out. I have known a couple of them to tell me that they was walking somewhere and had fallen. They didn’t have any way to contact police or anyone. I sign them up for the safelink. Just to make sure that when they are out they can contact someone. They are very graceful to have the phone. Thank you for the service you .provide the the seniors.
I also lve in Connecticut with safelink has arrive. I heard about the $3.00 cards. I want to know where to purchase them.
Some of these so called tax payers are too funny… complain complain complain… most of you can’t even spell… I’m guessing its because smoke is coming out of the top of your heads over free phones that as you nimrods say are being paid for with so called tax dollars… uhhhh WRONG! BUT ignorance is BLISS… Lifeline has been around for over two decades, the program was created by REAGAN, the gov’t is just upgrading the Lifeline system…. with all the tragedies like Katrina which basically had folks cut off from civilization… after the horrors experienced there in LA… why wouldn’t folks who suspect they are so much smarter even worry about a free phone option for low income families. AGAIN for those who think they are paying for something they are not… SHUT UP & continue living in ignorance… you so called tax payers are not paying for this service… find a wall & beat some sense in your brains… remember use your head for more than a hat rack..
All states offer assistance with landline phones bills some are even free. The world moved fine without cell phones up to 15 years ago, And I am really really pissed off that a government in trillions of dollars in debt is funding this with my tax dollars. I have a severely disabled first cousin, cerebral palsy in a wheel chair and even he WORKS. I am sorry nobody NEEDS a cell phone not nobody not no how. There are far better ways for the government to spend money. Encouraging more people to live off the government is not one of them.
Oh yes SINGLEWORKING MOM? I was one for many years and worked two jobs to support both my children. When I couldn’t afford to have a cell phone (and there were times that I couldn’t) I didn’t have one , period. This is a new program as it supplies cell phones. And it is paid for by taxes on….those who actually PAY for their cell phone service.
For those of you who say you need a cell phone but can’t afford one is just looking for a handout and to say “oh pitiful me”. If you are so broke then how can you afford internet service?
And maybe you shouldn’t have kids that you can’t afford to take care of - how about you WAIT until you are financially stable.
If that is an unfair statement then go to Wal-Mart and buy a prepaid phone and stop sucking the life out of our great country. Be self sufficient! Geez, what a bunch of whiney, lazy asses our country has become since the democrats have been in office.
No one owes you a thing in life and NOTHING IN LIFE IS FREE. someone is paying for this service just not YOU.
Years ago, when I was out of work, the thing that made it almost impossible to find another job was the fact that I know longer had a telephone. All those people whining about how people should just “get a job” - why don’t YOU try “finding a job” without a telephone.
A phone is a necessity, and especially needed if someone is to pick themselves up off the mat. And a cell phone is CHEAPER than a land line. You guys seem to think it’s some amazing luxury. It’s not. It’s now the cheap way to go. If you can only have one phone, that’s the one.
hey i lost my safelink cell phone how do i get another one sent to me
Fine, so it comes from the Universal Services Fund - that is just another name for redistribution of wealth. Just another government mandated program that adds a “fee” (instead of a “tax”) to my phone bill every month.
Can anyone tell me why those of us looking for work don’t qualify? Could it be…pandering to the masses that elected the socialist that is destroying this country.
In reply to ELDER and other complainers
Firstly, in this day and age, a cell phone is almost important to have in a car, as a child restraint. Lets say you would break down in the dead of winter, in the middle of now where, with your children. Would you just sit there and freeze in the car, and wait for someone to find you, or risk taking your children out into the cold and try to find a phone. I know I wouldn’t. Having a cell phone in cases like this can save lives.
As a mother who didn’t have a cell phone, with my oldest daughter that was born with a severe heart defect, and passed away one month before her second birthday, it really made me afraid to even go shopping, or leave her at a baby sitters, if I couldn’t take her with me. Having a cell phone back then would have really made things easier.
A few months after her passing, I left her father, due to severe abuse toward me and my other daughter. Although my daughter and I live with my fiance’, and have our basic needs, it’s hard enough to find a job for either of us. As ALOT of the businesses in our area have closed down. My fiance’ has been lucky enough to get cash jobs here and there, but no where around us is hiring as no one wants to leave their jobs. We are expecting our first child together in 2 months, and I’m at risk for preterm labor, and we live an HOUR away from the nearest hospital. It will ease my mind having this cheap cell phone with only 60 minutes in our area, for my fiance to take with him, while he continues job searching, as he will have the ONLY vehicle.
AND REMEMBER, even tho we (the ones that have to rely on this phone) are poor, it doesn’t mean we don’t pay taxes too. IN FACT, the one that told me about this, and told me I should apply, is my fiance’s own father, who is a vet, who was in vietnam, and was a upper class citizen before her retired. So if he’s not complaining about it, why should all you snoody, think your better than everyone, people have a problem with it.
Here’s some statistics for all you snoody people who have a problem with this :
Since the start of the recession in December 2007, the number of unemployed
persons has increased by 7.6 million to 15.1 million, and the unemployment
rate has doubled to 9.8 percent. (See table A-1.)
Unemployment rates for the major worker groups–adult men (10.3 percent),
adult women (7.8 percent), teenagers (25.9 percent), whites (9.0 percent),
blacks (15.4 percent), and Hispanics (12.7 percent)–showed little change
in September. The unemployment rate for Asians was 7.4 percent, not season-
ally adjusted. The rates for all major worker groups are much higher than
at the start of the recession. (See tables A-1, A-2, and A-3.)
Among the unemployed, the number of job losers and persons who completed
temporary jobs rose by 603,000 to 10.4 million in September. The number of
long-term unemployed (those jobless for 27 weeks and over) rose by 450,000
to 5.4 million. In September, 35.6 percent of unemployed persons were job-
less for 27 weeks or more. (See tables A-8 and A-9.)
The civilian labor force participation rate declined by 0.3 percentage point
in September to 65.2 percent. The employment-population ratio, at 58.8 per-
cent, also declined over the month and has decreased by 3.9 percentage points
since the recession began in December 2007. (See table A-1.)
In September, the number of persons working part time for economic reasons
(sometimes referred to as involuntary part-time workers) was little changed
at 9.2 million. The number of such workers rose sharply throughout most of
the fall and winter but has been little changed since March. (See table A-5.)
About 2.2 million persons were marginally attached to the labor force in
September, an increase of 615,000 from a year earlier. (The data are not sea-
sonally adjusted.) These individuals were not in the labor force, wanted and
were available for work, and had looked for a job sometime in the prior 12
months. They were not counted as unemployed because they had not searched for
work in the 4 weeks preceding the survey. (See table A-13.)
Among the marginally attached, there were 706,000 discouraged workers in
September, up by 239,000 from a year earlier. (The data are not seasonally
adjusted.) Discouraged workers are persons not currently looking for work
because they believe no jobs are available for them. The other 1.5 million
persons marginally attached to the labor force in September had not searched
for work in the 4 weeks preceding the survey for reasons such as school
attendance or family responsibilities.

[...] June 10th, 2009 at 2:47 pm i didn
further more, I’m betting alot of people go to the library for internet access. I am fortunate enough to be able to use the internet at my fiance’s parents house when needed. Just because people have access to the internet, doesn’t mean they have internet in their home. Libraries, at least where I’m from, let you use the internet for free if you have a library card.
yeah, i am betting that people aren’t trekking to the library to use the computer.
I know plenty of people who do. I used to myself, before my fiance’s parents got internet, and still do if for some reason the internet is down at their place.
You all automatically think just because someone doesn’t have the best paying job we are stupid or something. But we aren’t. And most of us can’t help that we are unemployed. My fiance has been searching high and low for a job, and even the employment agency in our area can’t find people jobs, because THERE ARE NONE! My fiance had a temp job a few weeks ago, and one of the guys there was the boyfriend of the lady that ran the employment agency in our area, and he told everyone straight out, that his girlfriend hasn’t been able to help him find a job in over 9 months, because no one is hiring, and if they do, they don’t go to agencies too often anymore. When something like that happens, you know there aren’t many jobs. There are fewer jobs in America than Americans. I even know of some smaller grocery stores, gas stations, a warehouse production site, and a franchise of outback steakhouse (40 miles from where we live) that went out of business in our area. These are hard times, and unfortunately loads of people are getting laid off, due to business closures, or them not just being able to keep everyone on.
My fiance went to college for carpentry, and he can’t even find a job with that. He also has several years of retail experience, and his most recent job was on the loading docks of Ashley furniture, and had that job for well over 3 years, was making $700 weekly, before he got laid off, do to them not being able to afford to keep everyone. My own father, who is a lab technician got laid off, when he’s been in the field for over 20 years, and was the best tech the clinic had.
I also have a friend that has worked for North American moving company for almost 15 years, and he says he’s lucky to work 1 day a week now, compared to the 5-7 days that he used to, and he’s one of the men higher up in the company.
The job economy is at an all time low, and the government is sending jobs over seas to save money, which is taking jobs away from us AMERICANS. Why do you think that everytime you call a customer service number, or you get a telemarketer, that they don’t speak the best english, and you have a hard time understanding them. These jobs used to be held by us americans, and because they are sent overseas, hundreds and thousands of citizens in our country are jobless. And to add to that, illegal aliens are getting jobs before us, because they will work for lesser money.
If you are so upset about us lower class people needing the extra help in order to survive, and provide a healthier living environment for our children, then you can give me your job, as I’d gladly take it and you can see how hard it is to live on such a fixed income. It isn’t very easy.
it seems the only one bothered by class is you. I am not anywhere near upper class but my husband and I are hard working folks. I have been working since i was 15. I put myself through college by working while everyone around me was out having a good time. I busted my ass to get where i am.
the reason i am annoyed is not for the assistance programs because i do think some people need help but because some of the people are actually whining about the free products they are receiving. Who says anything in life is free? I understand what it is like to be out of work and struggling because I went through that as well so I sympathize with your plight.
But I still say there are too many people getting government assistance that don’t need it. We waste so much money on useless crap.
And lets talk about our new President - he hasn’t done anything to increase jobs or help the economy at all. All he has done was give money that we didn’t have to begin with (i.e. stimulus checks) to people who don’t work and therefore don’t put money back into the economy. And you are right about companies sending all the jobs overseas - why can’t our government give incentives to companies to hire US workers?
I hope things get better for you - I hope things get better for all of us.
GOD BLESS
I agree with the new president. It seems since he’s gotten into office, there have been even fewer jobs and the economy has gotten works. And then he gets the noble peace prize??? I don’t see how that was possible. As far as the stimulus checks, I haven’t gotten a single one yet, but I’m not going to worry about it, we are surviving without them. I do think he should get up and do something to better us civilians instead of the government. Us civilians are the ones that are out there everyday, if your lucky enough to still hold your job.
And I know some people are probably misusing the government programs, but there are many of us who truly need it. Right now, my family is one of them, but we plan on it only being short term, as soon as my fiance’ lands a job, (he’s in a stack of people being looked at for one night job) we are going to try to get off from it. This phone is only going to be used until we have the baby or we can afford to put time on my alltel phone. We live a long ways away from the birthing hospital, and I don’t always trust calling the company and having them inform people there is an emergency at home. I had my step-mom who was taking care of my 3 year old, calling my work, stating that Raven was really sick and I needed to come home last year, and they never told me I even received a call. Believe me, if I wasn’t so worried about my fiance’ getting the call when I go into labor, I wouldn’t be getting this phone. I’ve had a tracfone in the past, and hated it. We just don’t have the $40 a month to put on my alltel prepaid phone. This is my fiance’s first child, and he doesn’t want to miss his daughter’s birth, if he is working by then. Thankfully if he doesn’t get in with this permanent job he’s waiting to hear about, he does know of a temp 3-5 month job in the town next over. I guess they have to rebuild the town hall and only have 1/4 of the construction workers needed.
I have lived on both sides of the fence. From 2004-beginning of 2007, I lived on a military base with my ex husband, and could afford some nice luxeries, new cars, big flat screen plasma screen tv’s and what not, until our first daughter was born, with severe heart problems. Then all that money was put toward trips back and forth to the hospital in D.C., which was a 45 minute drive one way from our base. Taking almost daily trips back and forth for her to be seen, and spending extended days living in the hospital and buying food at the cafeteria isn’t cheap. Then moving back to my hometown when my ex and I split after our daughter’s passing, and seeing how bad it has gotten and having to work at a McDonalds just to provide for my other daughter wasn’t easy. But I eventually got a better paying job, and lost it due to downsizing. And have been trying to find one since. I did get the occasional job from my mom and her janitorial company cleaning apartments, windows, and floors, and would literally drive the 4-5 hours to those job sites, just so I could make the extra money. My fiance now gets occasional jobs with a few friends that has some connections to moving companies, snow removal and that kind of stuff, so that is the way we are making it ourselves, but we want something permanent, so I can get some more college done. Neither one of us are used to having such a hard time finding ourselves jobs. They used to come easy back when I was in high school 6 years ago. I just hope things get better before long. The biggest thing that keeps our family going is knowing that god does have a bigger plan for us and one day we have better finances. I’ve always been raised to work hard. I worked for my mom’s company before I hit the 7th grade, and when I became 17, I even worked nights waxing and stripping hard floors, even on school nights, and still made sure I went to school the next day. So having to rely on the government is not the most easiest thing to admit, and I only do so to be able to give my 4 year old girl, and baby girl on the way, a better life. Atleast with that, they can eat healthier, and get good medical care until my fiance lands his job. Thankfully he has connections into this job he’s trying for, and it seems probable that he gets in, then we can get off from all this and do what’s best for our children on our own.
555 doesn’t seem to be working for me and I didn’t get my minutes for November and my phone has been on. It keeps saying Service Unavailable… I have tried for the last couple days …. what do I do?
I just want to say this. For those of you who insist on being so mad that the “poor” get this and that, and that it is so unfair to you taxpayers, well, I have news for you, I am considered poor now, due to circumstances beyond my control, and guess what? I too have been a taxpayer, and was a taxpayer for many many years. So get off your high horses, and remember, “there but for the grace of God go I”. Consider yourself very very fortunate that you don’t have to depend on the government for assistance. Hopefully, you will never lose your spouse, you will never lose your job, you will never get sick, you will never get injured, and your life will always be perfect. For those of you who are so quick to judge, you need to have to spend about a week being poor, and hopefully then, you will have a little compassion for those less fortunate than you, you bunch of arrogant, ignorant snobs. And if something ever happens to you, and you lose your money, you would probably kill yourself, because life is hard and you have to be tough in order to get through life living day to day. Have a heart and quit putting everyone with problems in the same catagory. We all got this way for different reasons, but the bottom line is still the same, we are poor and we cannot help it.
Uhm, When I recieved my Safelink phone it came with no preset ringtones, and nobody supports the cell phone for downloadable ringtones, and of course the phone does not have internet, I am going to college and I no longer have a car so I need this safelink phone for when I need a ride. I mean fancy ringtones are no neccessitie but my parents were going to pay for me to get one or two just because I am on my own, and they could not afford to get me a phone & pay for the bill. So does anyone know is there anyway to get ringtones?
Momto3 - GOD BLESS YOU and your FAMILY! You are the perfect example of hard-working people who just need a little help. If everyone was like you no one would complain about government assistance programs but then you have Jelly who wants to buy ringtones? Please give me a break - Jelly should save the money on silly ringtones and try to put some money aside for an emergency.
I am not a heartless person nor am I wealthy. I have lived both sides as well. I once survived on a can of buscuits and peanut for 1 week. So don’t think I can’t relate to what some of you are going through.
I am just tired of the government giving away money to people who don’t truly need the help or are not grateful.
Anyway, I hope our new President stops talking out of both sides of his mouth and starts doing something for our great country. I think he was quick to judge our past presidents and then realized how difficult his job really is.
GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE! We could all use it right now.
This cracks me up.
I was on the verge of suicide, son is an ungrateful little bastard, he has a problem with authority.
I lost my job at McDonald’s when I was unable to come up with a good reason as to why I came to work stoned out of my mind.
One day while I was driving after taking a few drinks of 90-proof liquor. I was ready to drive off a bridge and into the river of destruction until I heard about Safelink. The government supported wireless cellular program, provided from the Latin-American based Tracfone company. If I were to buy 60 units, it would cost me $19.99.
After hearing about SafeLink, I could get those minutes FREE! I get a prescription to Roxycodone and Xanax.
Now it doesn’t cost out of pocket to call on my new Safelink phone to sell these to make a little under the table cash.
My income is over $3000 a month counting my sales. I live in a two story house And Safelink changed my life. I can now sell my pills for free! 68 Potential customers a month. Woohoo!
My safelink phone was stolen………….is it possible to get another or would it be easier to just buy one and get the number transfered?
how do I get a err home phone
Safelink is an awesome program! My daughter just graduated from college and was eligible for this phone and it has really helped her get on her feet. She has stayed connected with us and recently just got hired for her first job! The government is really doing a helpful job by creating this opportunitity for low-income households.
