Apple has recently made public the top 10 list of applications at the iTunes App Store, and while some results are expected, others can be considered a surprise. Like everyone knows, these applications can be used on the iPhone or on the iPod touch, and there are 2 categories: paid and free.
As you can imagine, most of the applications (over 70%) are games and the rest is somehow related to the internet and social networks, like GoogleEarth and Facebook.
Top 10 Paid Applications at the iTunes store:
Koi Pond (The Blimp Pilots)
Super Monkey Ball (SEGA)
Pocket Guitar (Shinya Kasatani)
allRadio (Jeremie Engel Engel)
iChalky (Eric Metois)
Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 3D (Vivendi)
Moto Chaser (Freeverse)
Texas Hold’em (Apple)
Cro-Mag Rally (Pangea)
Air Hockey (Acceleroto)
Top 10 Free Applications at the iTunes store:
iPint (Beattie McGuiness Bungay)

Note that the iTunes Store is now also listing the top 20 paid and free apps in every category (Books, Business, Education, Entertainment, Games, etc. etc.) right on the main landing pages for each. I imagine the presentations of iPhone Apps — both within the iTunes store and on the device itself — will have to undergo a pretty radical change in the next year given the quantity and diversity of apps available.
