The Apple iPhone in all its Glory: Ready to be ripped apart
Plus points here for Apple: their out-of-the-box experience is nothing short of legendary, and the tradition continues with the iPhone.
Getting the iPhone is one thing. Activating it is a whole another story. As soon as you open the phone for the first time, it asks you to connect it to iTunes:
After downloading the latest iTunes, I tried activating it, but to no avail. Now, I don't have an abundance of credit history - which is a problem if you want to get the iPhone activated. AT&T offered me alternatives: I could either get a pre-approved credit check code by visiting an AT&T store, or I could become a prepaid customer. I chose the latter, and after that activation was pretty smooth.
Once iTunes detects that the iPhone is connected, it also syncs up your email accounts, address books, bookmarks and other important information. This is one place where sync just works. Trademark Apple.
... which brings us to the Home screen.
