If you’re looking for a Windows Mobile alternative to the stock web browser, Mozilla’s recently released Fennec Alpha 2 may be of interest to you. In essence, Fennec is the mobile version of Firefox. Of course, it’s in an Alpha stage right now so expect some bugs.

Below are the improvements to Alpha 2 over Alpha 1:

  • Improved panning performance
  • Newly designed theme
  • JavaScript error console is now built in
  • Improved add-on support
  • Numerous bug fixes
  • Improved UI polish

Despite Fennec Alpha 1 only being available for HTC Touch Pro users, Alpha 2 has been made available for anyone and everyone running Windows Mobile 6.

Download it here.

Fennec or Firefox Mobile is still in the making. That means that Mozilla is testing its mobile browser for various mobile platforms. Firefox Mobile is currently available for Windows Mobile 6 but it’s still in its alpha state.

The alpha has been particularly made for the HTC Touch Pro, so if you own one you can try the Fennec out. The alpha version will offer you the Awesome Bar search field front and center, suggested search terms and search history. Mozilla built the interface for alpha 1 for Windows Mobile using CSS. That means that Fennec will be able to adjust to various screen sizes and resolutions.

You should definitely try out the alpha 1 but don’t expect too much from it just yet. Bugs may still be present so make sure you offer some feedback about all that Fennec experience to Mozilla. And let us know what you think about it.

HTC Touch

The HTC Touch is here. Available exclusively through Sprint starting November 4, the Touch is a full touch-screen mobile phone running on Windows Mobile 6 with entertainment being its prime agenda. Featuring a big, nearly 3-inch display, the phone is based on TouchFLO technology for smooth menu navigation with a finger swipe. There’s also a 3D cube interface for quick access to entertainment, communication tools and a dial-by-picture photo caller ID screen.

The HTC Touch takes advantage of Sprint’s broadband network and lets users access the Sprint Music Store for over-the-air song downloads. You can also watch Sprint TV featuring 50 live and on-demand channels of audio and video. The phone offers a MicroSD memory card slot that supports up to 4GB capacity, and comes bundled with a 512MB card.

A basic 2 MPx camera with 5x zoom (and video capability) is thrown in. There’s also stereo Bluetooth and voice-activated dialing. The HTC Touch measures 4″ x 2.4″ x 0.6″ and weighs in at just 4 oz. Priced at US $249.99 (along with a 2 year service agreement), there’s a $100 rebate as well. There’s no “unlimited” data plan, instead standard data rates will apply for music/content downloads.

  • HP iPAQ 610 Business Navigator

Remember the HP iPAQ 600 series smartphone that we saw on The Whack a while ago? Well, the device has apparently been approved by the FCC although the juicy stuff - namely the photos and user manual - is still well hidden thanks to the confidentiality request put in by Hewlett-Packard.

The device, identified as B94HHI14CN, cannot be used for simultaneous operations of the WLAN and WWAN HSDPA transmitters by software control, and will prohibit co-transmission as well. If you are connected to your wireless LAN and receive a phone call, the software will shut down WLAN transmission immediately. Hopefully you were not downloading your favorite songs just then.

Expect confirmation from HP soon. Hopefully we will also get an idea of the pricing.

  • Palm Treo 500v

Palm afficianados (and Vodafone customers) can look forward to the new Palm Treo 500v smartphone unveiled at London today, boasting 3G/UMTS high-speed internet access on the mobile phone. Based on Windows Mobile 6, the Treo 500v features a full-fledged keyboard, support for streaming videos - that’s right, YouTube comes to your Palm now - a large screen and apps for IM. Initially available for Vodafone customers in Germany, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, the UK and South Africa, the Treo 500v is bundled with the usual slew of Microsoft office applications including Outlook. There’s also Windows Live for Windows Mobile.

One of the niceties of the Treo 500v is that it allows your laptop to share data access with the mobile phone, effectively letting you stay online within Vodafon’s coverage area. There’s also Vodafone live!, a portal for news, sports and entertainment. Palm has also thrown in a 2.0 megapixel camera. On board, there’s 150 megs of memory, with support for microSD memory cards. Bluetooth support rounds up the feature list.

Available in two colors: glacier white and charcoal gray.
