Sony Walkman S Series

In addition to the Walkman NW-A840 that we mentioned earlier today, Sony has presented another PMP - the S Series.

The Sony Walkman S Series will become available in 4 different colors - pink, green, orange, and grey - and so far there is no information about its price. There are 2 models available, the small one that only has 8GB of internal memory, or the better one with 32GB. This Walkman series supports a big number format files, including the usual MP3, WMa, ATRAC, but also the HE-AAC and PCM AAC. In the video department, it supports three formats: MPEG-4, AVC, and WMV. Other details include a FM radio tuner, and a 2-inch LCD monitor.

Inside the Sony Walkman NW-A840 you can find a battery life that lasts 29 hours in sound-mode, or 9 hours in video-mode. The PMP plays MPEG-4 files for video at 384kbps, and it has radio + S-Master digital amplifier, a TV-out function with a resolution of 720×480, and not much more…

  • Walkman Beats iPod in Japan

You’d better sit down for this although by the time I finished explaining you’ll see how this isn’t such a big deal after all. Sony’s Walkman players have beaten the Apple’s iPod lineup in sales. According to BCN Inc, a research company from Tokyo, the Walkman series had 43% market share for the week ending on August 30 while iPod came second with 42.1%.

It’s the first time in four years that Sony beats Apple in the music player business but here’s why this isn’t such a big deal. It looks like the iPhone isn’t considered part of the iPod line which means that everyone that purchased an iPhone wasn’t counted. Sure it’s a phone but it’s also a powerful player. And since the iPhone 3GS is the best-selling phone in Japan we wouldn’t be surprised to see the numbers above change a bit.

The Sony Ericsson W595 is now available in a new design if you have been holding out on getting it because of its bland and lifeless colors.  Carphone Warehouse UK has put up an Ed Hardy version of the Walkman phone, that is festooned with Ed Hardy’s tattoos all over, which should evoke a few stares at the very least, but brushing aside its badass body, the W595 has chosen to remain true to its roots with a 3.2 megapixel camera, HSDPA network support, M2 card support, Bluetooth, and a 2.2-inch QVGA display.  Available on Carphone Warehouse starting from £20 on an 18-month contract from T-Mobile UK.

  • Two entry-level phones have been officially unveiled by Sony Ericsson. They are two new Walkman phones, the W205 and the W205a and according to Sony Ericsson they will be the most affordable Walkman phones ever:

Here’s what you can expect from the new phones:

    • Enjoy your music with the high quality Walkman experience
    • FM radio
    • TrackID
    • 1.3 megapixel camera
    • Video recording
    • Bluetooth™
    • Multiple phonebook
    • Memory Stick Micro (M2) support up to 2GB

Sony Ericsson failed to announce the prices or availability dates for any of the two models. That’s a bit strange considering the company did say these are the cheapest Walkman phones ever to have been created. Shall we expect them to be available for free on contracts?

After being blessed by the FCC a while ago, the GPS-toting Sony Ericsson W518a is finally joining AT&T’s ranks this July 19 along with the 8mpx shooter, the Cybershot C905a.  Take away the GPS receiver and the W518a will start to look like just another Walkman phone with the usual Walkman-oriented features, a 3.2 megapixel camera, and dedicated external music controls, but wait, don’t write it off so easy! The flip phone is Facebook enabled and its Advanced Shake Control gives users the ease of changing a song, shuffle, and control volume with just a shake.  Still not good enough?  Well, how about Gesture Control, where you wave your hand in front of its camera to reject a call? Yep, if that’s got your attention, all you have to do is wait till the W518a starts selling on July 19 with a $49.99 price tag to get one (after rebates with a two-year agreement).

A few months ago we saw the Sony Ericsson Twiggy Walkman phone get leaked and today we see it appear in pictures again. There’s no news about Twiggy’s future. People say the phone was cancelled so we definitely have to wait and see what the company has in mind regarding this Walkman phone. The phone comes with an unnecessary flip cover which lets you control the music. Well at least it lets you play and pause it when you like as there aren’t any other touch friendly buttons on it. The phone also sports a 3.2 camera worthy of your attention but other than that we have no specific info about the other features of the W350. So if the Twiggy is really cancelled, what other Walkman phones is Sony Ericsson working on?

    Sony to Launch Android Walkman?

Google’s Android will have a bright future in the gadgets’ world. And it’s not just cell phones anymore. Android is getting ready to be used in netbooks and tablets and, from the looks of it, in Walkmans too. That’s right people, Sony is considering the Android platform for its future Walkman line. In fact the company might develop a common platform for MP3 players, mobile phones and Internet devices which will be entirely based on Android.

In a world dominated by the iPod, an Android music player capable of other tricks than just playing music would definitely stand out in the MP3 players crowd. We have no confirmation from Sony that indeed this is the way to go, but we can always hope that the next generation X-Series Walkman will come with Android inside.

If white does for you what black does for me, Sony Ericsson has something to show you.  The company has added another hue to the Ambient Black for the upcoming W205 Walkman phone, which was announced in April.   Other than the hazard of getting it dirty in the first few days of handling it, the Creamy White color does look attractive.  But the new color changes nothing on the inside and the W205’s features remain low end with a 1.3-megapixel camera, 5MB of onboard memory with 2GB M2 card support, 1.8-inch display, and the usual Walkman goodies.  Expected to land in July 2009.

All those people interested in music should turn their attention to the UK where Sony’s OLED Walkman is about to be officially launched. Tomorrow, May 13 is the day when you’ll be able to get it. The player will cost £209 or £279 depending on the version: 16GB or 32GB. Sure the price looks scary but let’s not forget that’s the UK pricing. No official announcements have been made just yet so we’ll be waiting for Sony to reveal the prices for other markets. Is anyone going to buy one tomorrow?

Sony Ericsson’s W518a has just been approved by the FCC and it’s going to arrive soon in the USA from AT&T. We don’t have exact dates for you but the phone should be available in the following months. The W518a is a GPS-version of the Sony Ericsson W508 and it will feature a QVGA display, external music-dedicated keys and a 3.2 megapixel camera. We’ll be waiting for some prices with those final arrival dates.

For someone looking for top-of-the-line music quality within their budget, the W205 from Sony Ericsson should seem pretty alluring.  With support for GSM/GPRS 900/1800 and GSM/GPRS 850/1900 (W205a), this newest member’s forte may not be blazing fast speeds but to be a good Walkman phone, and it seems like it is, with all the usual Walkman-only features including TrackID, which can identify the number you liked and recorded on its FM radio.  Other than that, we have a 1.3 megapixel camera, a 1.8-inch display, speakerphone, Bluetooth, up to 2GB expansion via an M2 slot, and Opera Mini for web browsing.  The W205 can keep you entertained for up to 13 hours 30 mins or up to 9 hours of talktime on a single charge.

The W205 Walkman phone will be available starting this third quarter in a unique color of Ambient Black for an unknown price, but we are sure it won’t be high enough to burn through anyone’s pockets.

The new Sony NW-S730FK series Walkman is out on the market and you will be able to choose from two models, the NW-S738FK and the NW-S736FK. The two devices will be featuring a 2-inch TFT display, very good sound quality, support for many audio formats as well as a linear PCM or the ATRAC advanced Lossless. You can watch videos and stock up to 8Gb or 4Gb of files. Storage space is the only difference between the two. What more can you ask for? As far as I am concerned if you don’t have an iPod or the intention to buy one you could always go with a new Sony Walkman. These ones will be out on March 14th.

For those of you following the OLED Walkman from Sony we have some good news and some bad news. The good news is that the touchscreen Walkman is available from Amazon. The bad news is that it’s coming only from Amazon UK for the moment.

You will be able to pre-order a 16GB version for around $308 and a 32GB version for about $407. The Sony devices are expected to ship between two and five weeks from now, so you’ll have to keep waiting to actually get it. When will it hit Amazon USA? We have no idea just yet.

When news of the Hikaru came out some days ago, this was actually the code name for the latest powerhouse multimedia phone by Sony Ericsson. Today that codename has been decoded and given the proper model name in the Sony Ericsson W995. This new phone aims to combine cyber-shot technology with the Walkman and become one of the high-end handsets for the company.

“With Media Go™ there’s no need to worry about format, resolution and ‘frame per second’ anymore.” said Alexandre Cardon, Global Marketing Business Manager at Sony Ericsson. “No longer will the video you transferred from your PC to your phone play in low resolution or bad quality. With Media Go™ and the W995 the experience is as good on your phone as it was on your PC.”

“The W995 Walkman™ phone brings together the very best music experiences of any phone, augments this with best in class video and sharing capabilities to offer the most complete communication entertainment package to date.” said Alexandre Cardon. “This powerful mobile phone delivers the best possible video resolution that can fit in your pocket and with enough battery stamina to watch two full length feature films. The W995 also comes complete with the award winning clear audio experience and an 8.1 megapixel camera for the highest quality picture and sound available in a mobile phone.”

This promises to be a fantastic addition to Sony Ericsson’s portfolio. An 8 megapixel camera, Clear Audio experience, 2.6-inch screen and Wi-Fi in one package makes this phone truly awesome. The phone will ship during Q2 this year in the colours Cosmic Silver, Energetic Red, and Progressive Black.

  • The Sony Ericsson Premier 3 Walkman phone in the picture here looks weird, but in a good way. It will be launched by KDDI in Japan this spring and it will feature a 3-inch display, a 3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, GPS, infrared and even a remote control. The microSD slot will let you upgrade the existing 50MB of storage space on board of the Premier 3 up to 2GB, which is nearly not enough. Especially since you’re going to want to listen to lots of music and play lots of videos. However there is a cool feature for this Walkman phone. It can rip music from a CD. Just plug the player into the remote via a 3.5mm plug and the rest is easy to do.

Sony Ericsson has released two new Walkman phones. One is the W715 which we have already seen and the other is the W508 Walkman mobile phone.

As with the W715, the W508 will come with the SenseMe and TrackID technology. Shake and Gesture control are also present. That means you’re going to get the same Walkman experience. But let’s take a look at this phone’s specs:

    • TrackID with text search – find your favourite songs in seconds
    • PlayNow arena – customise your mobile phone with unique ringtones and wallpapers
    • Shake control– skip through your tracks with a flick of the hand
    • Gesture control - Move your hand above the W508 to mute an incoming call or put the alarm clock on snooze without touching it.
    • quad band EDGE 850/900/1800/1900
    • HSDPA 850/1900/2100 for the W508a and HSDPA 2100 for the W508
    • two colors: Metal Grey and Poetic White
    • 1GB Memory Stick Micro
    • 3.2 megapixel camera with 3.2x digital zoom
    • Bluetooth stereo A2DP

This Walkman will arrive sometime in Q2 in various markets so that’s when we’re going to get back to you with pricing details.
