Wal-Mart to offer low-cost phone plans

It would appear that retail giant Wal-Mart is offering two exclusive wireless plans on October 18th. The first plan is 1,000 minutes, 1,000 texts plus 30 MB of data for $30. The other is unlimited minutes, texts, and data for just $45. Of course, you can only use it on certain phones. The phones are generally $100 with no contract, and they aren’t exactly the iPhone.

Did you do any shopping today? Managed to snatch quite a few deals? Well this Sunday Wal-Mart will start selling the iPhone 3G in about 2,500 stores. The prices are no mystery anymore. You still need the AT&T agreement and an 8GB model will sell for $197 while a 16GB model will sell for $297.

Gary Severson, Wal-Mart senior vice president of entertainment said:

We are delighted to bring customers this ground-breaking mobile technology. Our electronics associates have been preparing for many weeks for the arrival of iPhone 3G.

How come Wal-Mart hasn’t offered more that just $2 off AT&T’s price? Anyone interested in answering that question?

  • Well, I guess you can all see for yourselves I don’t need to be explaining a whole lot. The iPhone selling at Wal-Mart rumors were true, or at least partially. Unfortunately it won’t go for $99 as everybody knew up ’til now. And it’s not the 4GB version either. The 8GB model will be selling for $197 which is not really notably cheaper than in any other Apple or AT&T store for that matter.

Well folks, get ready for another rumor here. We have a special 4GB iPhone 3G which should start selling in Wal-Mart stores later this month for just $99. You will still have to get a two-year contract from you-know-who in order to make it work, but it’s a cheaper iPhone. Isn’t that what you were asking for?

Apple is doing well in the smartphone business. It has overcome Windows Mobile both in the USA and worldwide but it’s still outranked by Nokia and it’s Symbian. Is Steve Jobs ready to sell cheaper smartphones? After all they have reached their 10 million units quota for the year. We’ll just have to wait and see if this Wal-Mart $99 iPhone gets confirmed or not.
