Virgin Mobile has finally released an official statment regarding their own USB broadband modem which had its picture leaked a few days ago.

The great thing about Virgin Mobile’s offering is that there is no contract commitment whatsoever. Plans are as follows:

10-days and 100 MB - $10
30-days and 250 MB - $20
30-days and 600MB - $40
30-days and 1GB - $60

And the Broadband2go USB dongle itself will cost $150.

So, you won’t be able to just stack up band with as other than the 10-day plan it will all run out at the end of the month. But oh well, at least you don’t have to sign your life away to a 2-year contract, right?

Virgin says the modem will be currently available only at Best Buy with only drivers for Windows XP and Vista having been announced at launch. What? No love for the Mac crowd?

By now we have all heard of Virgin Mobile’s $49.99/month voice only plan but apparently Boost Mobile’s flat rate plan of $50.00 seems better. Of course this would depend on which you spend a lot on, voice calls or texting.

Apparently, while the Virgin Mobile plan covers calls, it does not include text messaging which if totaled could become more expensive once you monthly bill comes along.

Compared to Boost Mobile’s plan, they offer unlimited nationwide talk, text and multimedia messaging, wireless Web access and nationwide Walkie-Talkie that reaches more than 274 million people in more than 15,800 cities across the U.S. for an all-inclusive price of $50/month.

While the Virgin Mobile plan includes unlimited talk, those looking to send text messages will need to pay an additional $10 per month. Research shows that text messaging is on the rise, closing in on mobile phone calls as consumers’ communication of choice.

According to CTIA (Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association), text messaging traffic grew to more than 75 billion messages per month in the United States in 2008, up from 7.2 billion per month in 2005.

In addition to saving consumers more than $200 per year, Boost Mobile’s plan, unlike Virgin Mobile’s plan, offers consumers picture messaging, text messaging, Web access and the popular Walkie-Talkie feature. Boost Mobile offers the fastest national “push-to-talk” network available in the prepaid industry. More than 90 percent of Boost iDEN customers surveyed say they use nationwide Boost Walkie-Talkie, and 70 percent of those customers use the service daily.

Dan Schulman, Virgin Mobile’s CEO said that Virgin is thinking about adding some touchscreen handsets to its current lineup. He failed to mention what models he was referring to and how much the phones will cost but we’re probably going to have some official announcements soon. What he did ad is that the new smartphones are targeted at low to middle-income youth on prepaid. Maybe the upcoming CTIA will reveal more about Virgin Mobile’s intentions.

The LG Pink Flare in the picture here isn’t a phone made for Valentine’s. Well, it can be, but it’s main purpose is to help us fight breast cancer. With every purchase $5 will be donated to Susan G. Koman for the Cure, which is the largest breast cancer organization in the world. The phone will be available from Virgin Mobile in the U.S., and the carrier will donate at least $150,000 to the Cure.

The LG Pink Flare is a simple clamshell phone which won’t surprise you with extravagant features. It’s so cheap that you could actually purchase one just for the sake of donating those $5. The Pink Flare will be available at Best Buy only for $29.99.

    Pre-Paid Cell Phones

    Virgin Mobile USA
    Image via Wikipedia

An entire generation of young people has now grown up without any familiarity with black Bakelite Bell Phones that weigh more than a stack of phone books and feature a rotary dial. A cell phone is no longer a luxury, it’s a necessity, and it’s especially a necessity if you are under 21 and all you friends have one. If you don’t have a credit card or a credit history, and you can’t live without a cell phone (of course you can’t!), Virgin mobile is not a bad way to go.

Virgin sells an entry level flip phone, the Kyocera TNT, for only $19.99 that comes with a 30 day guarantee. Shipping and activation are free, and when you buy a phone from Virgin Mobile there are no contracts to sign, no credit checks, nothing to deal with except the phone itself and however many minutes you want to buy. Prepaid minutes are not the cheapest way to go, but until you can afford to get involved in horribly complex cell phone service contracts that will leave you swearing at the corporate overlords who concoct them, prepaid minutes are definitely the easiest way to go. Details are available at virginmobilusa.com.

  • I think I like the idea someone working for Virgin Mobile Canada had. The carrier has decided to launch the a new plan called myPair which will get you virtually unlimited voice minutes for you and your favorite loved one. For $50 you get two lines with unlimited local calling between them. 350 shared daytime minutes between them, which isn’t that much but they become unlimited in the evenings and during the weekend.

You can choose other options too. Get myCrew which will get you unlimited talk/text with up to 5 people. myTalk&Text with you unlimited texting and myCalls will get you unlimited incoming calls. The whole thing sounds pretty good so go ahead and check the fine print. Who knows what’s hidden in the closet!

The popular US carrier Virgin Mobile has made a few changes on international call rates, and now it is cheaper than ever to make phone calls to Latin American countries and others. The sudden change is probably related to the worldwide (money) crisis, and by dropping the rates they can get more clients and still have a good margin of profit.

So, how much does it cost to make calls to Brazil, Venezuela, Mexico, China, and Hong Kong among other countries? As low as five cents per minute! When comparing prices with other carriers, the value is higher by 100% or 200%.

One of the advantages that came with this modification is that Virgin customers don’t need to buy a special card to make international calls. Just use the existing ones, or buy a normal Top-Up card.

Check all the international calling rates at Virgin website.

Dan Cipoletti from Vigin Mobile, comments:

These rates are a great value and make Virgin Mobile USA an easy choice for international callers. (more…)

    TNT Phone from Virgin Mobile

One would expect a product that’s named TNT to offer some explosions. The only thing that’s going to explode is your thrill about uncovering a brand new, cool phone. The TNT isn’t that new and it isn’t that cool either. What is it? It’s just a phone. A plain phone which will let you speak as much as you want with your friends. And that’s about all that this Virgin Mobile can do for you.

If the TNT looks familiar it’s because it is made by Kyocera and it’s similar to the their Adreno S2400. The TNT will be released by Virgin Mobile somewhere in August and it will cost about $19.99. Yes, it’s that cheap.

For that price you get phone that can offer you a Bluetooth 1.2 experience. There’s voice dialing, MMS messasging, speakerphone and WAP Internet browser.

S2400 offers Bluetooth 1.2 and voice dialing. You’ll also find text and multimedia messaging, basic organizer features, a speakerphone, a WAP Internet browser, voice memos, a vibrate mode, and a 500-contact phone book.

If you are followed by the police and want to get a fast phone and new number well that’s when this TNT will come in handy. Or if you’re just visiting the US for a couple of weeks and you are in need of a cheap pay as you go alternative. Check a Virgin Mobile store for more details.

    The Arc from Virgin Mobile

Virgin Mobile seems to be rather active lately. Not only did they launch their Totally Unlimited plans and pay as you go options, but they also managed to buy Helio out. And they aren’t stopping there. They have launched the Arc, a very affordable entry level cell phone.

UTStarcom’s Arc will retail for $49.99. It doesn’t offer that much besides actual phone calls and messaging. You will have Bluetooth, a VGA camera, speakerphones and 2 displays to play with. If you need a smartphone looking like that, you’d have to look elsewhere. This is just a fast phone ready to be used and dumped afterwards. It’s a good pay as you go alternative if you have just lost your primary cell phone.

Well here’s something I wasn’t really expecting. Virgin Mobile is offering a “Totally Unlimited” plan for just $79.99 starting with July 1st. And that’s not even it. Apparently this new plan will be the first unlimited nationwide calling plan with no contract and more importantly with no roaming charges. Ok, where’s the catch? The hidden clause? You know, where are we supposed to sign with blood?

Virgin Mobile has announced the launch of Slash, a slick new slider from Samsung. With its great looks, the Slash additionally offers a camera of unspecified dimensions, web browsing, speakerphone, voice dialling, Bluetooth and MP3 ringtone support. From the looks of it, this will be another low to mid-range phone, accompanying the Kyocera Sonic, the only other slider on Virgin Mobile’s portfolio.

No other details are available on its pricing or release date yet.
