All The Latest Cell Phone, Gadget and Tech News

See, I told you that jailbreaking your handset could bring on a series of unwanted events your way. It looks like a security vulnerability has been exposed by a Dutch hacker. The hacker gained access to various jailbroken phones and then he sent picture messages demanding a €5 PayPal payment:

If you don’t pay, it’s fine by me, but remember, the way I got access to your iPhone can be used by thousands of others-they can send text messages from your number (like I did), use it to call or record your calls, and actually whatever they want, even use it for their hacking activities! I can assure you, I have no intention of harming you or whatever, but, some hackers do! It’s just my advice to secure your phone.

Luckily enough he did reveal the fix for the problem and it comes free of charge. Did you have any problems with your jailbroken iPhone?

  • iPhone OS 3.1.2 has been unlocked already and you can expect to be able to unlock your iPhone on November 4. The unlock is possible thanks to Geohot, the same hacker that managed to jailbreak OS 3.1.2. Next week you should be looking for Blacksn0w which will do the trick for you. In case you use Blackra1n for jailbreaking the iPhone then you’ll be able to download the unlock solution straight from it.

Just make sure you know what you’re doing before performing any jailbreaking and/or unlocking operations. We’re certainly not recommending such activities which can lead to all sorts of troubles with your carrier, not to mention Apple, in the future.

    iPhone 3.1OS Jailbreak Available

You have been waiting so long folks for the actual iPhone 3.1 OS jailbreak to arrive and the iPhone Dev Team has delivered. Your iPhone 3GS is ready to be freed. All you need to do is get the Pwnage Tool 3.1.3 but only if the phone was jailbroken when running iPhone OS 3.0 or 3.0.1. That shouldn’t be a problem, should it?

Of course, we don’t recommend in any way that you jailbreak and/or unlock your iPhone, or any other phone for that matter. It’s solely up to you to take such decision, and before you do, take a personal moment and consider what could happen if you messed up your phone. I bet the manufacturer and your carrier will not be happy to hear about your hacking activities. Those of you that still want to jailbreak, follow the link below at your own expense!

  • As you should already know by now, there’s a new iPhone OS version released in order to deal with that SMS security issue that threatened every iPhone in the world. In case you own a jailbroken and unlocked phone then you should know that redsn0w and ultrasn0w will work on the new iPhone OS 3.0.1 version. So go ahead, update your iPhone, get the latest OS, and then do your jailbreaking and unlocking just as you normally would with the regular iPhone OS 3.0. Not that we’re advising your to either jailbreak or unlock any handset. We’re just saying…

The Pre is an amazing phone and we keep discovering stuff about it. One of them is the Landscape email mode which is currently hidden from the eyes of average Pre users. But some of those users are smart enough to discover the unlock key.

In case you too want to access your email in landscape mode then you have to enter “RocknRollHax” on the keyboard. You’ll have to enter the unlock code exactly as written here every time you access the email application but at least you’ll have that landscape mode activated every time. You’ll have to keep using the phone at least until Palm will make this feature official.

It’s not official yet but it looks like we’re getting awfully closer to that much expected iPhone 3GS jailbreak. Those of you currently playing with an iPhone 3G are already able to unlock and jailbreak that new iPhone 3.0 OS. The iPhone Dev Team is now working solely on the iPhone 3GS jailbreak solution, but it’s not the Dev Team that got to jailbreak a 3GS first.

George Hotz, the guy that unlocked the iPhone 3G for the first time, managed to jailbreak the iPhone 3GS for the first time too. That’s remarkably fast considering that the iPhone 3GS has been around for just a week. Now we all have to wait for the iPhone Dev Team to come up with their solution which will probably be very similar.

You all knew this was bound to happen sooner or later! First we talk about the new iPhone 3GS, analyze its new features, compare it to any possible new launched phone, make fun of AT&T and Microsoft and then inevitably start talking about the iPhone 3GS jailbreak and unlock solution. While we don’t support such actions and while we do advise you to proceed with care when it comes to possibly voiding any warranties you have for your new iPhone 3GS, we still have to tell you what’s available and how it’s done. In the name of science of course!

So if you’re planning on unlocking and/or jailbreaking your new iPhone 3GS then you should only go to the trusted source. The iPhone Dev Team are currently working on it and it will probably release software solutions once it has figured out how the new iPhone OS 3.0 works. That’s right, we’re not telling you today where to go to download for free a certain jailbreak/unlock application since it’s not ready yet. We’re telling you to pay attention where you’re getting the supposed information or new software from. It seems that a bunch of guys out there are either making money on the iPhone Dev Team and/or offering virus-packed downloads. Here’s what the iPhone Dev Blog says:

Unfortunately, there are predators out there that are counting on your over-exuberance. Maybe we should call it yell0w fever. One very recent example is a certain yellowsn0w221 page on wordpress.com. Do not download anything from that page if you’re on a PC, else you’ll be infected with a virus. The page talks and talks about a supposed Firmware 2.2.1 yellowsn0w exploit, but it’s all a ruse to get you to download and infect your PC.

    Hack an iPhone for $10,000

Despite the fact that the iPhone has already been jailbroken and unlocked, it doesn’t mean that others shouldn’t try it out. As a matter of fact, there’s a contest which will award the best iPhone hacker $10,000. Pwn2Own is going to be available at the CanSecWest security convention in Vancouver, Canada from March 18-20. Hackers will be given various other phones to play with. They will have to choose from Android, Symbian, Windows Mobile, BlackBerry and iPhone and they will be able only to exploit “general actions a normal user would take while using the device.”

Besides the handset hacking, the contest also includes a web browser division. A Sony Vaio running Windows 7 and Internet Explorer 8, Firefox and Google Chrome and a MacBook running OS X and Safari and Firefox will be waiting for contestants to hack them. Every successful bug will get the hacker $5,000. Any hackers going to Vancouver to get some money hacking stuff? Let us know how it all works out for you.

The iPhone Dev Team has promised unlock software for the iPhone and it has delivered it. I don’t know if you were thinking about unlocking the iPhone when you were popping that champagne open but today might be a great day to do it. The software is available for download with detailed instructions to help your transition from your default iPhone carrier to your favorite iPhone carrier. Here’s what you need to know about yellowsn0w version 0.9.4 beta:

    BASICS

    * The unlock works exclusively with baseband 02.28.00. This baseband is provided by the latest firmware update (2.2) from Apple. You’ll need to upgrade to this release using iTunes and then use QuickPwn to activate etc. There are plenty of tutorials about this on iclarified, bigboss, and other established tutorial sites. Because it works on 02.28.00, it is available to everyone on the planet. This means we don’t need to unnecessarily expose holes in earlier basebands, which is an important concern.
    * The application is a small daemon that is launched on boot. It injects the payload at boot and also whenever there is a baseband reset. You won’t notice anything about it other than that your third-party sim now works. It’s a small program and unobtrusive. There is no GUI (this is by design).
    * You can add the application using the sources outlined below (coming soon). There are Cydia and Installer sources available, so use whichever you are comfortable using.
    * yellowsn0w is completely removable through Cydia, the command line, and iTunes.

    DETAILS

    * There is a known issue with SIM cards that have STK (SIM Toolkit) application menus. These menus are usually items such as “top up” “get credit” “lotto numbers” etc. These menu items confuse the application sometimes. Removing and reinserting the SIM once after reboot (give it about 10 secs 60 seconds (with v0.9.1) after you see the slide to unlock widget) fixes this issue. We’re working on a better fix. Update: version 0.9.4 fixes this for many (but probably not all) users who previously had to wait a minute and then replug the sim.
    * For those of you using SIM cards without STK menus, the application has some optional arguments that will make the unlock much faster for you. So either experiment on your own (use “yellowsn0w -h” for usage) or wait for a customization writeup.
    * After you install yellowsn0w via Cydia, you should return to the Cydia main menu then reboot your iPhone with the 3rd party SIM installed. Wait for the slide to unlock screen, then wait 10 or 15 secs more. If you don’t see your carrier name pop up, then remove your SIM, reinsert it, and wait 10 secs more. This is the step we’ll be working on eliminating next.

    RANDOM

    * The application is version 0.9 0.9.1 0.9.4 This is considered beta software, you use it at your own risk. You know the score.
    * The application is released on a non-commerical basis. Please do not accept pirates and scummy ripoffs of this software. We license this software for single use and in a non-commerical environment (meaning you can’t charge for it). The techniques and methods used are not to be used by third party companies. We are watching you Jody…we won’t be so forgiving this time.
    * Direct linking to the repository URLs is prohibited, please only link to this post. We will be checking referers.
    * Happy 2009 and enjoy!

Just follow the instructions above taken straight from the iPhone Dev Team’s blog and let us know if the yellowst0ne beta worked for you.

Has the iPhone Dev Team done it? Do they have the keys for unlocking that iPhone 3G? Well the hack isn’t out yet and the team will release it on December 31st. There’s no other way of starting the new year than switching to your favorite cell phone provider with your iPhone 3G, is there?

It looks like the hack requires a baseband of 2.11.07 or earlier and after release it will be as easy to use as the Pwnage Tool and QuickPwn. Look for yellowsn0w! The ball is in Apple’s court now. Will they come up with an anti-unlocking solution?

    T-Mobile G1 Already Unlocked?

While the iPhone 3G hasn’t been unlocked yet, the G1 has. The G1 managed to survive for only a week and what a week it was. Now the open-source Android phone is open-carrier too. All you need is $22.99 and a G1 to work on.

The unlocked G1s have been reported to work in other networks but not everything is going as smooth as you might have suspected. Calls and SMS messages go through without any problems but logging to Gmail isn’t possible. That also means there’s no Android Market either. What do you think? Will you unlock yours? Watch the video above for more details!

  • 3G Baseband Tool from iphonedev on Vimeo.
The iPhone Dev Team is closer to unlocking the iPhone 3G. They have cracked the baseband which means the unlock we always wished for it’s coming.

Unfortunately we can’t say when the full unlock will arrive. The baseband will give you control of the phone’s telecomm via hacked code. A small step for iPhone Dev Team, a big step for all those people that want an unlocked device.

  • No-Key%20Nokia%20X-SIM.jpgIf the service you’ve bought with your Nokia cell phones has got you grumpy in light of the recent price drops in various American cell phone networks’ call plans, then the No-Key Nokia X-SIM can help you out. The No-Key Nokia X-SIM can unlock your DCT-4 or BB5 Nokia phone in a jiffy. And we’re not talking about tinkering with your phone such that it voids your warranty. You simply insert the No-Key Nokia X-SIM with the SIM card of the network provider of your choice, and your phone is good to go. This works because based on a locked phone’s mechanism, when you insert another SIM inside the phone, it won’t work because its identification system would indicate that it’s another network provider. However, the No-Key Nokia X-SIM can totally bypass this identification system, allowing you to use any network of your choosing. You can buy the No-Key Nokia X-SIM here for US$31.69.

    Factory testing shows the No-Key Nokia X-SIM to unlock 2630, 5300, 5700, 6120c, 6110 navigator, 6500c, 6500s, N76, N95, N95 8GB, N61 8GB, E65, N73, N80, 6120c, N75, 6300, as well as all DCT4 and BB5 Nokia mobile phones.
