The iPhone is not a new thing to UK customers as it has been around for a while now. But Orange has just started to offer Apple’s phone to its customers as O2 has lost its iPhone exclusivity.
The initial reports are saying that Orange has sold over 30,000 units which is not a bad number for the first day. It seems that the Orange iPhone is turning out to be such a success as Orange offers a wider coverage than its competition. Will the iPhone be a success if Verizon started selling it in the USA right now?
The good news for O2 iPhone owners is that their carrier will unlock the iPhone starting today. Simply go to a O2 store and see if you qualify for the procedure.
And last but not least, we will remind you that Vodafone is also going to sell the iPhone so you might want to wait before buying one from Orange or O2.

According to O2’ customer support, the phone will be available in O2 stores starting with October 19. The price hasn’t been specified at this point so we’ll be back with more details once O2 is ready to launch the phone.

It looks like Motorola fans over the pond will be able to enjoy the company’s first Android phone earlier than everyone else. The DEXT is available already in the UK from Orange so go get it while it’s hot. The phone will be available for free if you select a 2-year contract of at least £34.26 per month. According to a recent study made by ATG - Art Technology Group - the UK consumers don’t like the current mobile shopping system. 38% of the consumers have tried shopping with their cellphone, and 28% of them didn’t like it.
Reasons for the dislike are various: the security system that could be better; the payment system could be easier; the network speeds are still slow; and the price not being clear is a big no no. If only the online retailers offered a better customer experience, or if they could all have a website optimized for mobile phones… now that would be a big change, for the better of course.

The screenshot here comes to prove that HTC’s latest Windows Mobile 6.5 phone is headed to O2 as previously discussed. The phone has already appeared in O2’s UK catalog which is all the confirmation we need! The HD2 or the LEO is supposed to become available anywhere from October 12 to October 26. If you’re going to go look for the catalog, you might be surprised to see it’s not available yet in O2 stores. It’s almost October so you can check back in a few days and actually see the HTC HD2 on printed paper for yourself. And its funny how the phone’s OS is clearly displayed in this leaked shot. Should we assume there’s no TouchFLO 3D like we heard on top of Redmond’s mobile OS?

While we are patiently waiting for T-Mobile to announce Motorola’s first Android phone, the Cliq, Orange UK has gone ahead and announced the Cliq already. We were expecting this move, so it’s really no surprise there! Sure the phone will have a different name over there and you already know it: the DEXT.
The DEXT will be available at the beginning of October and those interested in purchasing it should know it will be available for free provided that you select a new 2-year contract of at least £34.26/month (that’s about $56.50). That monthly fee will get you 900 voice minutes, unlimited texting, data and Orange Maps support. Not a bad deal considering that you’d get to play with a brand new Android phone which comes with a load of social networking skills. So if you happen to live in the UK and you’re getting ready to snatch a DEXT, let us know how the phone is treating you!

Deutsche Telekom seems to be more and more interested in mergers. After we’ve heard how its T-Mobile UK division will join forces with Orange UK, we now hear that the German conglomerate has a new target in sight. Sprint Nextel might be the company that Deutsche Telekom will purchase and this isn’t the first time we hear about it. That means Sprint Nextel will merge with T-Mobile USA and AT&T’s comfortable second largest position will be threatened by the new emerging carrier.
Don’t get all too excited just yet folks. Said merger will not be a piece of cake and it will take a while to be accomplished. In the mean time Deutsche Telekom is being advised by Deutsche Bank on the matter and we should see an offer in the following weeks. We’ll be back with more details soon as this is a very important move in the mobile business.

If you happen to own an Omnia i900 phone from Samsung then you might be one of those lucky fellows that can honestly say they have taken a peak at Samsung’s upcoming Application Store. Unfortunately you’d have to go the UK, Italy or France as that’s where the store has been made available so far.
The store offers so far about 300 paid apps and lots of free apps ready to be installed on your Samsung phones. By the end of the year Samsung will have around 2,000 apps in the store. It’s not too much, but it’s a healthy start. Besides the i900, the Omnia II I8000 and the Omnia LTE B7300 will also get support for accessing the new Application Store. Anyone excited about the new app store?

We’ve heard for quite a while now that Deutsche Telekom was interested in getting rid of T-Mobile UK. And now we hear that the German giant has been secretly speaking to the French giant, France Telecom about the possible marriage between T-Mobile UK and Orange UK.
The merger will be completed in the following months and the future T-Mobile/Orange UK carrier will probably become the largest in UK. We’ll tell you more in the near future as the deal is expected to be completed by October. So what do you say folks in Britain? How do you see this potential merger?

Canadians can now purchase their own Pre phone from Bell but you already knew that. What you didn’t know is that UK customers will apparently be able to get their own GSM Palm Pre by the end of October. The Pre will be available exclusively from O2 in the UK and the carrier has been keeping things quiet so far. But it looks like O2 managers have been given a release date which sounds exactly like Friday, October 30.

Vodafone is ready to up the ante when it comes to mobile broadband. The company will launch a new 14.4 Megabit mobile broadband service in the UK which is quite impressive, at least on paper. What that means for the average consumer is that the probable top speed will be somewhere around 10.8Mbps while the usual speed will average between 1Mbps to 4Mbps. The major cities and surrounding areas will be among the first to receive the new service although nationwide 14.4Mbps has been mentioned.

We’ve been hearing about LG’s GD910 watch phone for too long now and yet still haven’t heard of a solid release date or price point. Luckily, Orange UK has recently told us that the watch phone will be priced at £500 or about $825, on August 27th of this year.
While this may seem like an enormous price tag for such a small device, it’s dramatically less than the ~$1,290 Orange estimated it to cost earlier this month.
Anyone out there eagerly awaiting the GD910’s launch?

Recent reports suggest that Samsung is preparing to launch their Android-powered Galaxy in the UK sometime next week.
News comes to us from O2 employees who say the Galaxy has appeared on their store’s stock management system stating the phone will arrive next week. There’s no official confirmation from Samsung or O2 that this is actually happening but if you have your eye on this device, hold off another week just to be sure.

This is the true story of how T-Mobile UK has been able to sell iPhone 3G units despite the official Apple partner in the UK is O2. And O2 exclusivity deal will expire in September if not later.
T-Mobile has been offering iPhone 3G units to its most exclusive clientele. The company apparently has been selling up to 150 phones a week to those customers that have contracts of at least £75 per month. T-Mobile is basically a reseller that offers SIM-free iPhones as an incentive method for its high-roller customers. That means T-Mobile UK isn’t doing anything illegal. Immoral, sure, but we’re living some rough economic times.
When will T-Mobile start selling that hot new iPhone 3GS? Maybe sometime in October?
