According to Matt Jones, vice president of mobile strategy and operations for Gannet Digital, USA TODAY is synonymous with travel. I honestly didn’t really know this, and I never would have guessed that the sensational newspaper has its own travel app for the iPhone.
USA Today AutoPilot offers TripIt integration, real-time flight status, as well as access to travel blogs. It can also give you a flight-delay map that can instantly show trouble spots, and it can provide the user with a directory for airlines, hotels, and car-rental companies. Sadly, it can only track flights, not the aforementioned hotel and car reservations.
But hey, you should not ask too much from a free app.

For people who don’t want to go through the trouble skimming the papers or relentlessly looking for great travel deals, here is one made easier by AAA Discounts. In fact, you only have to get your iPhone to do it! Apple iPhone users can now easily find their way to AAA member savings by downloading a new application, AAA Discounts.
The free, GPS-based “app” displays retail locations of AAA Show Your Card & Save partners near user locations. There are more than 110,000 AAA Show Your Card & Save locations and more than 51 million AAA members in North America.
The AAA Discounts iPhone app acquires the user’s location automatically, displays nearby AAA Show Your Card & Save locations and allows users to pan and zoom on a regional map. It also displays key information including the name, address, phone, distance from location and a summary of the discount details. Users can filter listings by category and have one click access to narrative directions. The AAA Discounts app works on the iPod Touch as well when the user has access to WiFi.
First in a series of AAA applications planned for the iPhone, AAA Discounts can be obtained in two ways: via an iPhone by clicking on the App Store icon and searching “AAA Discounts” or by downloading iTunes on your computer and searching “AAA Discounts” in the App Store. The application uses components of AAA’s TripTik Travel Planner in combination with iPhone GPS capabilities.
