All The Latest Cell Phone and Mobile Electronics News

The iPhone and its 3G successor have been cracked. So did the G1 and lots of other phones. But has the Storm been cracked already?

It looks like someone has done that already using a SIM unlock code from Verizon. Then the Storm was given some Bold software and therefore it was used in T-Mobile’s GSM network. That means the Storm can be used with T-Mobile’s 2G voice network and with Verizon’s 3G data network.

I dare to say the Storm hasn’t been really unlocked yet. We’re still waiting for a different version.

Motorola ZN5: Free at T-Mobile

The last time we mentioned the Motorola ZN5, which was only a few weeks ago, it cost around $99.

But now T-Mobile has announced that it will offer the ZINE cellphone for free, that is, after a mail-in rebate and the obvious contract which in this case lasts for 2 years.

Just for a refreshment, the Motorola ZINE ZN5 has a good 5-megapixel camera by Kodak with xenon flash, support for WiFi, and a good looking keyboard.

We’ve seen lots of devices meant to get you more battery hours for your iPhone. It was time someone invented power accessories for your G1 too. With this double charger you can simultaneously charge your G1 and a spare battery. That means you will have an extra battery to play with during those long days at the office. It’s just $17 but it will get you all the power that you need! Oh, make sure you get a second battery for your G1 too. That might be a little more expensive!

T-Mobile Increases Data Prices

This isn’t something we weren’t expecting. T-Mobile has increased their wireless data prices for smartphones users. Unlimited data that used to cost $19.99 per month will cost $24.99 in the future. And there’s one more thing. It’s not unlimited anymore, it’s capped at 400 SMS or MMS messages. Unlimited data costs now $34.99 a month. That’s besides what you already pay for your Voice plan.

Getting a G1 will get you a default $24.99 data plan.

T-Mobile G1 Appears in White

Well we’ve been talking about a white G1 from T-Mobile and it seems it’s available already finally in T-Mobile stores. Some stores have the white model besides the black and brown ones but you should check them yourself as not all T-Mobile location have the new colored Android phone.

Remember the launch date of the T-Mobile G1? Everyone noticed how the first Android phone was promised to have access to lots of Amazon tracks and despite all that it failed to show a 3.5mm adapter. It looks like that whole problem has been finally solved. New G1s will get a 3.5mm headphone adapted for the ExtUSB port the phone comes with. That means you can get your headphones plugged into that free-of-charge adapter for some better quality music. What do you say? Will that make you buy a G1 today or are you sticking with the Storm?

  • It would be weird for you not to buy a white G1 because T-Mobile doesn’t have it in white yet. If you want one just get it no matter the color. However those of you that insist on getting a white G1 will be able to do so after Thanksgiving. That’s when T-Mobile might release it. People say it’s a white paint problem, although nothing is confirmed yet.

As the G1 runs the Android open-source OS, trying to jailbreak the phone seems rather silly. But apparently some clever people went ahead and pulled it off. Jailbreaking the G1 means you can install any application you want without being restricted to what’s officially supported.

But don’t worry sports’ fans! T-Mobile strikes back. The new firmware update, RC30 takes care of the whole jailbreaking thing! RC30 will block that telnetd which was used to get root access which means you won’t be able to do exactly anything with your G1. Anything that HTC, T-Mobile or Google wouldn’t want you to do. Here’s what Google said:

We’ve been notified of this issue (Jailbreaking of Android) and have developed a fix. We’re currently working with our partners to push the fix out and updating the open source code base to reflect these changes.

    Your move jailbreakers!

The Samsung T919 Behold and the Samsung Gravity have been officially launched by T-Mobile.

The Behold is a touchscreen device which will get you that TouchWiz experience with haptic feedback, 3G support, full HTML web browser and a 5-megapixel camera with video support. The phone will be available starting with November 10 and it will cost $149.99 with a contract.

The Gravity is a candybar phone with a secret function. It’s a QWERTY slide-out keyboard. That’s about the greatest feature of it. The phone costs $49.99 with a two-year plan and it’s going to be available a week later, starting with November 17.

It looks like T-Mobile is going to surprise its customers by upgrading its data plans. But it’s not any of the pleasant upgrades you were dreaming about. T-Mobile will raise the price for most of their plans, including their BlackBerry data plans. Most of the BlackBerry plans will go up $5 as follows:

BB Unlimited web & message bundle 400 will go from $19.99 to $24.99
BB Unlimited web & unlimited message bundle will go from $29.99 to $34.99
BB Unlimited Web Only will go from $19.99 to $24.99

The new data plans will affect customers which will sign up for one starting with November 16th. That sounds Verizon deja-vu-ish to me! Check them all out below.

    T-Mobile G1 to be Tethered?

Before the iPhone 3G was launched we were already passing around rumors about its tethering abilities. After the phone was released we didn’t get any official tethering support although people have tried. Now the G1 is the latest hot phone and the tethering questions remains.

A Graham Stewart took the problems in his hands and made an Android proxy application which will tether your G1. You will be able to share your Internet connection with your computer via USB. The application works but it’s not officially recognized by Google or T-Mobile. Fortunately it’s not forbidden yet by neither of them.

If you happened to pre-order your G1 you might remember how T-Mobile offered a free 3G network data trial coming with it. And here’s the bad news, or actually partially bad news. T-mobile has discontinued all that data once the trial period was over. That means you might have found your G1 without a 3G data connection ready to respond to your every day internet needs.

T-Mobile wanted its G1 customers to sign up for unlimited data plans while customers assumed that T-Mobile will turn their trial in a paid data plan. Assumption is the mother of all screw-ups and that’s why your phone doesn’t have a data plan. And I’m sure no one will even think about buying a device like the G1 if they didn’t need it for some heavy Internet usage.

As I said, partially bad news. Call T-Mobile and tell them you want the data plan and you will surely get it!

Did you get your G1 upgrade yet? Is T-Moblie’s network really lagging? Well then you can grab the download manually. If you have the slightest idea of what you are doing then follow the steps below. And, as always, be sure you back up first. Also you should be aware that T-Mobile doesn’t support this kind of firmware update. If things will go wrong, you will have a G1 that’s not working, and you will have to wait for a while to have your handset fixed.

Follow the steps after the break and tell us if it all works out for you.

Well here’s a surprise! After we’ve seen Sprint’s CEO saying that the current Android device can’t live up to his expectations, we have Verizon declaring that the G1 isn’t good enough either. Verizon wants its people ready to answer customers should those ask the G1 question… Why not get a G1 from T-Mobile instead of a Verizon phone?

Read the reasons below. Among those we have “super-limited 3G coverage”, “music downloads via Amazon MP3 limited to WiFi”. Well then I wonder if T-Mobile is going to go through the similar trouble when the Storm comes!

    T-Mobile G1 Already Unlocked?

While the iPhone 3G hasn’t been unlocked yet, the G1 has. The G1 managed to survive for only a week and what a week it was. Now the open-source Android phone is open-carrier too. All you need is $22.99 and a G1 to work on.

The unlocked G1s have been reported to work in other networks but not everything is going as smooth as you might have suspected. Calls and SMS messages go through without any problems but logging to Gmail isn’t possible. That also means there’s no Android Market either. What do you think? Will you unlock yours? Watch the video above for more details!

  • Will the G1 hit Walmart locations already? It would seem so. T-Mobile has just started to sell the devices out of its own stores and it already seeks to expand.

It seems that a deal between the two will get Android phones in the top 10 stores in every regional market. The phones might arrive as soon as November 24th in these Walmart stores and they might cost as low as $148.88 with a plan. So let me get this right, T-Mobile is willing to cut the price down and already move the G1 to other stores?

While we heard Dan Hesse’s opinion on the Android OS yesterday, today we have time to focus on HTC’s CEO, Peter Chou, who also happens to be one of the founders of the company. He says that HTC will be shipping 600,000 G1 units this year. For 2008 he has an estimate so far but for 2009 he says that “in general, we think we can do more next year.”

What do you think T-Mobile? Are you ok with just 600,000 units sold? Do you plan on getting more G1s out there? And let’s not forget that the holiday season is going to be upon us soon!

The G1 is the hottest handset out there right now but it still has some problems. We’ve seen yesterday that POP3/IMAP mail doesn’t fully work and today we found out there’s a security flaw inside the web browser which could prove to be really harmful to your device.

A researcher, Charles A. Miller says the flaw could be exploited when a user goes to a malicious website. Malicious code can use the flaw to install software on the G1 which will do only bad things after. Google knows about this whole thing and it’s working on it. It’s been reported that there’s already a patch ready and T-Mobile G1 owners will get it OTA soon.
