BlackBerry OS 5.0 Coming Tomorrow?

You must already be aware that some of RIM’s latest toys will be running BlackBerry OS 5.0 from the first day. So what happens to everyone else that won’t get a BlackBerry 9700 Bold or the BlackBerry Storm 2 in the following weeks? Well we have great news for you. RIM is apparently going to make OS 5.0 available in the near future for everyone that currently owns one of the other BlackBerry smartphones.

Verizon Wireless will be the first carrier to make the BlackBerry OS 5.0 available to BlackBerry Storm owners. Starting with tomorrow evening, or Monday at the latest, OS 5.0 will be available to Storm users so get your phones in order. You’ll also need Desktop Manager installed on your computer as this OS update is not coming over the air.

The Storm 2 hasn’t technically been made official for Verizon Wireless yet but it’s coming, we know it is. However, if recent reports are to be believed owners of the original BlackBerry Storm may not be left completely in the dark.

Said reports state that the original Storm will be getting a firmware update to bring it up to speed software wise with the Storm 2. This means the device will be getting flick scrolling, threaded texting and tabbed browsing.

Exactly when is this firmware update expected to go down? Let’s wait until Verizon officially announces the Storm 2 to make any assumptions.

The Storm 2 is certainly coming and Big Red is trying to get rid of its current BlackBerry Storm stock. In case you’re still interested in the “old” Storm then you can get it now for just $50 from Verizon’s online store. You get a $100 online discount and you’ll have to get a 2-year new contract. And since the buy-one-get-one deal is still available you might end up getting two BlackBerry Storms for just $50. What do you say?

In case you’re not going to wait for the BlackBerry Bold 9700, then maybe the Storm 2 9550 is the next BlackBerry in your life. And the phone has decided to star in a brand new video.

Check out the video above and you’ll see for yourself that the phone is a lot better than its predecessor. Sure we like the backlit buttons, the metal battery door and the chrome but what we really like is the SurePress screen which will only respond to your touch when the phone is in use. And the Storm 2 seems to be a pretty fast device especially since the OS in the video is not the final version. You have lots of memory to play with, great speakers, a 3.2-megapixel camera with autofocus and BlackBerry Messenger.

The Storm 2 looks better and better and while we don’t want to presume it’s going to be an iPhone killer we sure expect it to be quite popular among RIM fans and not only. We’re just hoping that the phone in the video is the real thing. After all, why shouldn’t it be?

Verizon has apparently decided to drop most smartphone prices down to only $99 when customers choose a new two-year agreement thus matching that AT&T $99 iPhone pricing. That means phones like the HTC Touch Pro, the BlackBerry Storm and many others will now be available for $99 with new contracts. The BlackBerry Tour and the Samsung Saga will still cost more than $99 and the upcoming Touch Pro2 and Storm 2 are definitely going to be a little more expensive too when Verizon will officially launch them. What $99 smartphone are you going to choose?

If you haven’t taken the plunge with the $99 Storm, just hold your horses there, fella, we might have a better deal for you.  In what can only be seen as a pre-Storm2 frenzy, the BlackBerry Storm 9530 is popping up all over the interweb at unbelievable prices, the most attractive of which seems to be at Wirefly.com, who are giving away Storms at just $29.99 after an instant discount and a new Verizon Wireless account.  Following close behind is AmazonWireless, which is also offering the BlackBerry Storm at a price of $49.99, a whole $50 less than what Verizon is currently selling it at.  Take your pick or go ahead and hold that urge in until the Storm2 hits the stores.

Your BlackBerry Storm is just about to get more music, so get ready for it. Slacker, the Internet radio provider, has reached a deal with Verizon so you can expect to bump into it a lot in the near future. Slacker has about 4 million songs available so you’ll definitely enjoy it. The free version requires for you to be willing to listen to some occasional ads while the paid version is commercial-free and comes with some extra features.

The application will be available over the air in the following days so you should definitely get it if you’re into mobile music.

Bell will be the exclusive carrier to bring the Palm Pre in Canada. While Bell doesn’t have an official release date yet it’s rumored that the carrier desperately wants to launch the Pre as fast as possible, maybe as soon as August. The only problem for Bell is to get enough Pre handsets to go around. If it will be able to get enough Pres from Palm the actual launch could occur even earlier. Will Bell be able to outperform its Storm launch? Hopefully this time around it will own more than 1,000 Pres on launch day!

Although we have already heard about this, it doesn’t hurt having it officially confirmed by none other than RIM’s CEO. Jim Balsillie has told Reuters that its company is indeed working on a successor for the BlackBerry Storm. The current Storm is a “huge success in terms of sales and adoption” therefore the Storm 2 should be at least as popular. Hopefully the new version will be better than its predecessor. After all, even despite having been sold in over one million copies, let’s not forget the troubles that came with the first Storm launch!

Although no RIM handset will match the number of iPhones sold so far, when taken together, RIM’s phones have sold better than Apple’s phones. That means more BlackBerries sold than iPhone versions. At least that’s what happened in the first quarter.

When it comes to the most popular Berry it seems that the Curve 83xx series are the most popular. The Curve was America’s best selling smartphone in Q1 according to analysts from the NPD group. The iPhone gets the second place followed by the Storm and the Pearl. The G1 is only in the fifth place as follows:

1. RIM BlackBerry Curve (all 83XX models)
2. Apple iPhone 3G (all models)
3. RIM BlackBerry Storm
4. RIM BlackBerry Pearl (all models, except flip)
5. T-Mobile G1

In total RIM sold 7.8 million BlackBerry phones and its probably going to sell more in the following months.

For all you Storm users under contract with Verizon, there’s a new OS that’s going to arrive soon. In a recent internal Verizon memo OS version 4.7.0.141 is mentioned. The memo also says that the new OS is here and it should be available soon to all Verizon customers that own a BlackBerry Storm 9530. RIM is apparently working on an even bigger version, 4.7.0.201 for the same phone but until such version is available you should try out Verizon’s update. As always, make sure you backup before you start messing up that RIM phone. And make sure you tell us how you feel about the new OS!

Research in Motion, creator of the popular Blackberry branding, has recently announced that their debut touchscreen device, the Storm, is now ready to have its firmware updated.

The update brings the firmware up to version 4.7.0.113 and is said to be the first major update since December. This version not only fixes a bunch of the glitches that many users had gripes about but also adds some newfound functionality to the device. After updating you’ll be able to use a full QWERTY keyboard in portrait mode making for a much smoother experience.

There is no telling when the firmware will actually be made available for download but Verizon assures us it will be soon.

After a successful trip in other parts of the world, the BlackBerry Storm is now ready to invade the UAE. Etisalat will be the lucky carrier this time.  Abdulla Hashim, VP, Business Solutions, Etisalat, had this to say on the occasion:

The BlackBerry Storm leverages Etisalat’s HSPA mobile broadband service with coverage of up to 99% of the populated areas in the UAE and roaming in 120 countries worldwide, to offer a perfect blend of connectivity, flexibility and convenience. This latest launch with RIM will create even more momentum in a market where Etisalat has been very successful in helping customers reap the productivity benefits of the BlackBerry platform.”

Let’s see what RIM has in store for us this September, assuming that the Storm 2 will be released on time.

  • The BlackBerry Storm is worth all the attention that it gets but what some might see it lacking is a bit of personality.  So, how about a Storm that will show off your favorite sport, like say ice hockey? That’s exactly what you will get if you are a Bell subscriber living in Canada, with an NHL-themed cover replacing that drab old black that everybody seem to like.

No details on when it will become available, but look to us to tell you.

    Create Your Own BlackBerry OS

Do you really want to create your own BlackBerry OS? Do you have what it take to customize it the way you always wanted? Well that is possible right now. Follow the steps bellow and have your fun with your custom made BlackBerry OS. Make sure you know what you’re doing and backup your data before this adventure. And make sure you won’t void any warranties in the process. Maybe that’s why it would be a good idea to get two Storms for the price of one.

Without further ado, here’s what you have to do:

    1. Download the OS that gave your BlackBerry the best reception and the OS that made your BlackBerry work best sans reception and install them both
    2. Go to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research in Motion\Shared\Loader Files and open up the folder for the OS build that has the best reception and copy the lone file inside its GSM/UMTS/CDMA folder
    3. Copy the lone radio file into the GSM/UMTS/CDMA folder of the OS build with the best functionality
    4. Update your device with the custom OS via Loader.exe

There you have it! Tell us how it all went!
