Sonim XP2 Gets FCC Approval

Sonim’s latest rugged phone, the XP2, got the nod from the FCC after passing various tests that phones are required to go through. Dubbed as the Sprint, it is the first handset from Sonim with 3G capability. It also has a tiny display via its octagon-shaped housing that is built for durability and survival. No word yet on pricing and when it would be available in the market.

Way back in October of last year we first heard of Sonim’s ultra rugged XP3 handset. However, it’s yet to find a carrier to call home.

Well, e device still hasn’t found a phone but it is available now, unlocked, for purchase in the US at $400. Don’t expect to many features out of this phone as it’s not a high-end smart phone or anything of the sort, but it does include a 3MP camera, GPS, Bluetooth

Did I mention it could hold up against even the brutal of beatings?

What makes a company on the auto industry like Land Rover, to make a push on the big market of handsets? How about two rugged cellphones that demonstrate the spirit of Land Rover? That’s probably what they were thinking when talking to Sonim Technologies in order to manufacture the devices.

Anyhow, the 2 upcoming cellphones will be entitled S1 and S2 G4, and have a release date set to 2Q of 2009. What makes the cellphones special is the ability of withstanding thermal shocks, being water resistant, capable of supporting humidity, and even drops from 1.6meters to the ground. Other than these rugged details, this is pretty much a mobile phone like any other.

With an expected release date set for March 2009, the XP3 is a GSM device with quad-band EDGE support, and a screen display that is resistant to glare and provides a resolution of 160×128 pixels. Other goodies on the Sonim cellphone include GPS, bluetooth, 3-megapixel camera, and bluetooth.
