LG “Baking” New Phones

This is perhaps the best way to sum up the new batch of mobile phones that LG Electronics has in store for all the mobile phone addicts. According to the LG 2010 Q1 roadmap, the company is set to unveil phones that come with names somewhat similar to their celebrated LG Chocolate. Among the new phones set to be released include:

  • LG Wine2
  • LG Wine Junior
  • LG Stage
  • LG Mini
  • LG Goya
  • LG Sweet
  • LG Cookie2
  • LG GX200

Some may be sequels such as the LG Wine2, LG Wine Junior, LG Sweet and the LG Cookie2 which may showcase a new design or better camera. The LG Stage looks like it will pick up from the LG Arena. The rest seem to be new phones to be set out in the market, referring to the LG Goya and LG Mini. Finally, the LG GX200 is a 2 SIM card handybar which may be simple and cheap for the mobile market.

Hopefully we can get more features in the coming months.

  • It was only a matter of time before the Chinese knockoff manufacturers turned their head towards the Kindle and it seems that time has come. What you see above is Peking University Founder’s eBook reader that bears a striking resemblance to Amazon’s Kindle 2.

This device will reportedly make use of a SIM card for cellular connection to download Apabi eBooks. While it’s not confirmed, it looks to be sporting an E-ink display similar to that of Amazon’s device.

There aren’t many more details in terms of specs or the UI but we do know that it has a 6″ display and will make its way to Japan by the end of this year.

Phone thefts are something common and with the rising number, people are getting wary of carrying out high-end mobile phones as well as the data contained. Today, most phones today are used by people and professionals as far as storing confidential data. In fact, you may say that these are equally important like the actual phone itself.

F-Secure unveils a new software security solution that comes with an anti-theft feature. Now, stolen phones may end up unusable at all. This is because auto-locks on the data and the phone itself in case the thief tried to use another SIM card will activate the theft-control feature and instantly locks the device.

In case of data protection when the phone falls into the wrong hands, one simple SMS message will automatically lock the phone. As an ultimate safety measure to prevent misuse, remote wipe erases all of the data on the phone when its user sends an SMS message to the device.

F-Secure Mobile Security 5 with anti-theft will be available by June 24, 2009. It is already available for S60 3rd and 5th edition smartphones through the F-Secure eStore

For the people looking for affordable and cost-effective calling plans for the international setting, National Geographic Wireless Service may have something helpful for you. National Geographic, together with Cellular Abroad, has introduced a new, affordable cell phone service that allows U.S. residents to make and receive international calls using the strength of the country’s largest digital wireless network. This new subscription-free wireless service provides users with a viable alternative to high monthly charges and long-term contracts and is now available online at CellularAbroad.com and in stores at J&R, Expansys, Fry’s and other select retailers.

Whereas the Talk Abroad Travel Phone, offered through Cellular Abroad, is geared toward those traveling overseas, the new National Geographic wireless service is the ideal solution for those calling from within the United States. The domestic wireless service offered through Cellular Abroad provides competitive rates when calling locations across the globe, with the convenience of using a U.S.-based phone number.

Direct-dial calls from the United States to many international destinations, including Mexico, Canada, China and the United Kingdom, start at $0.17 per minute, while domestic calls are just $0.15 per minute. Users can choose from the Motorola V3 Razr Explorer Quad Band cell phone for $199 and the Motorola C139 Dual Band cell phone for $69. Both handsets using this service include 133 minutes of free domestic talk time.

With 24/7, toll-free, U.S.-based customer support, and no bills, activation fees, service contracts or other hidden fees, the National Geographic wireless service offers full flexibility. Each cell phone is preloaded with iconic images, wallpapers and ring tones from National Geographic’s award-winning archives and comes with a battery, wall charger, SIM card and user manual.

A small SIM that is the size of a pin will make all the difference as far as wireless connectivity is concerned. T-Mobile has released a pin-sized SIM ideal for telematics and smart grid infrastructure solutions where environmental factors may reduce reliability and increase maintenance costs of removable SIM-based solutions.

The embedded SIM preserves many of the benefits of a GSM-based SIM solution (authentication, encryption and storage), but at a fraction the size of the traditional SIM you’d find in a mobile phone. In addition to the much smaller size, the embedded SIM differs from today’s SIMs in that it’s built from silicon — not plastic.

The embedded SIM is designed to be hard-mounted onto M2M modules, accelerating deployment by allowing customers to go directly from the factory to the field without having to provision and manually insert a SIM card. These features deliver an innovation opportunity for equipment and solution providers to work with T-Mobile in bringing smaller, more durable and cost-effective M2M solutions to market.

The availability of pervasive, affordable wireless data connectivity combined with key advancements like the embedded SIM, are removing the barriers to M2M adoption. Industries such as agriculture, automotive, energy, fleet management, healthcare, manufacturing and vending can benefit from these advancements and the intelligent connectivity provided by M2M systems.

  • LG Neon TE365F QWERTY Phone

LG Electronics offers a low cost phone that possesses the high quality features like QWERTY and touch screen features, then the LG Neon may be worth checking out. Also available through Rogers Wireless, the LG Neon is not supposed to compete against a BlackBerry or an iPhone. Instead, it’s a slightly beefier multimedia phone that happens to rock a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Texters will find that quite useful.

The most notable feature on the LG Neon TE365F is its slide-out QWERTY keyboard. This three-row keyboard will certainly come in handy for pumping out those text messages, instant messages, and emails. When you slide out the keyboard, the display automatically orients to landscape mode as well. The display also happens to be a touchscreen, but it comes with a few limitations that I’ll describe a little later in this review.

Other notable features on this multimedia and messaging-minded handset include tri-band (850/1800/1900) GSM/EDGE connectivity, Bluetooth, integrated MP3 player, FM radio, 2 megapixel camera (no flash), picture and video messaging, and an SMS conversation box. It’s nice to see a couple of notable basics like the MP3 player and digital camera, but there isn’t much here that’s going to floor you. At the same time, you have to realize that this phone only costs fifty bucks with contract. That’s pretty cheap.

Inside the box are the phone itself, a SIM card, charger, and supporting documentation. Even though there’s an MP3 player inside and the phone uses a proprietary connection, there is no provided headset.

The LG Neon TE365F QWERTY messaging phone is available through Fido for $50 with a qualifying two-year service agreement or for $175 outright.

  • When you buy a mobile phone, be sure it carries an authentic IMEI. What is an IMEI?

IMEI stands for International Mobile Equipment Identity, a number unique to every GSM and WCDMA and iDEN mobile phone as well as some satellite phones. It is usually found printed on the phone underneath the battery. It can be found by typing *#06# on a handset.

Apparently the move is geared not solely for tracking down illegally distributed phones. As far as India is concerned, the reason is for security. India’s mobile phone networks have agreed to an aggressive 10-day deadline to disconnect all mobile phones which either do not have a unique IMEI serial number, or use Chinese style blank IMEIs. The regulator ordered the clampdown citing security concerns following recent terrorist attacks in the country.

The IMEI is supposed to be both 15-digits in length, and unique to the handset. Recent reports have claimed that the operators are detecting up 1,000 handsets all sharing the same serial number. Although the serial number does not affect the billing, which is managed by SIM identities, it does add an extra layer of proof for the police if checking who made a phone call from a specific handset. As the IMEI is transmitted when a handset connects to the mobile network, access by that handset can be blocked by the network operator - a facility which is often used to prevent stolen handsets being reused with a replacement SIM card.

The operators were ordered to block the errant handsets earlier this year, but little progress was made resulting in the mandate from the Department of Telecommunications to step up the programme. The operators are trying to contact the users of handsets which will be blocked to advise them of the issue.

Toshiba offers a new solution for people who want to manage their finances through their mobile phones. The Universal SIM (USIM) cards unveiled by Toshiba supports the Near Field Communications (NFC) short wireless range that can be used in many wireless payments systems.

NFC technology embedded in mobile phones is being trialled by several operators, such as O2 with its Wallet programme, to offer a range of information, payment and travel options simply by touching the phone to a reader.

The USIM application runs as part of the SIM card, and stores user information as well as the usual SIM functions such as storing contact and message data. This provides a secure way for the verification and transmission of account details.

We’ve seen a mechanical iPhone 3G SIM unlock the other day. After ordering one SIM you would be placing it between your iPhone and your carrier’s SIM and everything would work out.

Well Brando has something really similar. The iSmartphone unlocks your iPhone 3G as well as other mobiles. Simply place it in the same soft and change the design of your carrier’s card with some scissors. The iSmartphone is available for just $20.50 and will ship worldwide. Tell us how it works if you’ve got one already!

When reports emerged that the iPhone was successfully unlocked in Europe, a lot of people became intrigued with it. So, some of them tried to do the same thing and replicate what hackers from Europe had done - use the SIM card method to completely unlock the iPhone.

Good news, it works! But you must all heed the warning that it will only work depending on the kind of SIM card you are using. If your SIM is a V1 (old one), you will be able to use the published method and program a new SIM card that will work with the iPhone and make it work in your network. If you are using a V2 or V3 SIM (most modern cards), then you will be out of luck: The V2 and V3 cards use a different kind of encryption. As a result, you won’t be able to extract the KI of your old card, which is not a D’ni communication device used in Uru but the key identification. This information is needed to program the forged card.

Well, with this deed done, no doubt Apple is busting their asses trying to find a way to prevent this from happening. They need to work doubly fast since the iPhone Dev Team is looking to finish their software-based unlocking work, which is different from the SIM card approach.
