AT&T Reports Record iPhone Sales

AT&T is still riding on the iPhone wave and I don’t want to imagine what will happen when they will eventually lose the iPhone exclusivity deal. The company has reported another great quarter despite the recession which is still being felt in various other domains. From the 4.3 million handsets activated by AT&T last quarter 74% or 3.2 million were iPhones. 1.28 million of those 3.2 million iPhone customers were new AT&T customers. That says a lot about the popularity of Apple’s phone and we can expect a lot more people to go for the iPhone in the following months.

AT&T has reached 81.6 million subscribers right now and about 25% of those are playing with iPhones. I bet that the competition is really annoyed for not having said yes to Apple a long time ago when Cupertino was looking for a partner to start selling the iPhone.

On a different note, the more people are buying iPhones and 3G devices, the worse 3G service they’re going to get from AT&T. Any thoughts on the matter?

It’s no surprise that netbooks are becoming more and more popular, is it? They are a lot cheaper than regular laptops and ultraportable. Manufacturers are announcing more and more models but at the same time they are shooting themselves in the foot when it comes to overall revenues. Customers tend to ignore laptops and choose the cheaper versions instead. In the second quarter the portable PC market was at $26.4 billion which is 5% less than last year’s similar period. Netbook sales brought in 264% more revenue than last year but, which means that netbooks represent 11.7% share of the mobile PC market. Next year it’s expected that netbooks will account for 21.5% of portable shipments and bring in 10.9%. I wonder if they’re counting future tablets sales there because I have the feeling we’re going to see quite a bunch of tablets the size of a netbook in the near future.

  • If you can’t wait to get your Zune HD but you’re not going to be in the USA next week than you can already forget about it. The PMP won’t be available anywhere outside the States for now. Not even Canada.

Here’s what Microsoft had to say about the Zune HD sales:

For the time being the Zune HD device will remain US only. Right now we are focused on deploying an exciting service in the form of Zune Video to 18 markets. We are looking at potential future hardware experiences for these markets, but do not have anything to announce right now.

So what do you think, did this strategy manage to scare Apple? Considering that Apple has sold over 225 million iPods already and the number is going to grow in the near future maybe Microsoft should revise its sales policy and expand to other foreign markets too.

AT&T halts sales of Nokia Mural

Just earlier this month we notified you of the impending AT&T release for the Nokia Mural. Well, it seems that before the device even got a chance to take off, AT&T is halting all sales.

Unfortunately, this delay is until further notice (which could mean forever) due to the production model of the device unable to work over AT&T’s 3G network. As for the stock that’s already out there, BGR reports that retailers have been ordered to send the phone back to headquarters for a software update.

Those of you discouraged about this news need not be as there are countless 3G clamshell alternatives out there.

  • HTC’s CEO Peter Chou has recently stepped forward to let us know that his company has officially sold over 1 million HTC Magics to date. If you’re scratching your head looking at the above device associated with the name Magic, it’s because branded it’s called the T-Mobile myTouch 3G in the United States.

Furthermore, Chou went on to say that HTC will focus their efforts on releasing more mid-range sub $300 smart phones onto the market for the rest of 2009. In fact, he hopes to have 50-60% of all of HTC’s handset shipments fall into the mid-range category.

Remember those weird Palm Pre commercials? Well it looks like a lot of people didn’t like them that much. And all this hasn’t escaped Gary Koepke, the co-founder of Modernist, the ad agency behind the ads. Here’s what he said about the Palm Pre campaign:

We weren’t trying to creep people out, but one thing I have learned now in this digital age is people can be as rude as they want as long as they don’t have to look you in the face. The Pre is probably being talked about more than other phones right now because of the marketing and advertising, and that’s a good thing. Could the ads work harder to show exactly how the phone works? Yes, but we knew it would be polarizing people to have a woman not shout at them and tell an interesting story.

It’s a very different look and feel for this sector. There’s nobody involved in an iPhone ad, and ‘Your life is on BlackBerry’ — isn’t that great? Instead of having a life? We wanted a middle ground between those two places — what about the people who want a really great smartphone?

Let’s say we understand! We still like better other commercials. And the customers like them a lot more too. AT&T and Apple has sold over 5 million iPhones in the last quarter while RIM is selling lots of BlackBerry phones too. How many Pre units has Palm and Sprint sold so far? Did the commercials help increase that number? We can’t say since we don’t have any of those official numbers!

We’ve been waiting for some time now to hear how many Palm Pre units has Sprint sold but nobody came out with an official number. We hear now that Pali Capital analyst Walter Piecyk said that Palm Pre sales have stabilized at 25,000. The number has been steadily decreasing since the Pre has been released. Sales went down from 50,000 units per week to 30,000 units per week and now the fall seems to have been stopped. These numbers have not been confirmed by either Sprint or Palm so we’ll keep waiting for official numbers. In any case, maybe Palm should consider changing those ads and launch some videos that will actually convince people to buy more Pres!

  • Nokia has announced the numbers for the second quarter of the year and they don’t look very good. Nokia has sold 103.2 million handsets in Q2 which is 11% better than in Q1. As for the global market share, Nokia still holds an impressive 38% in Q2 which is 1% better than in Q1. And you’d expect Nokia’s profits to be up too right? Well that’s not what happened folks! Are you ready for this? Nokia’s operating profit for Q2 was of just 775 million Euros. That sounds like a lot but that’s 66% less than last year. Net sales dropped 25% in Q2 compared to last year which amounts to 9.9 billion Euros.

The hottest Nokia phones were the 5800 and the E71. The 5800 XpressMusic sold in 3.7 million units in Q2 while the E71 sold in 5 million units since it was launched.

What is Nokia expecting for the third quarter? Well the company will maintain its market share but it also expects device volumes to decline by 10% from 2008 levels. We’ll be waiting to see similar reports from the other big names in the industry. Is any manufacturer doing better than in 2008?

  • Palm Pre sells over 300,000 units

It’s no secret that the Palm Pre is a highly sought after handset, especially considering it’s running Palm’s intuitive new webOS. But one may ask themselves just how sought after is Palm’s comeback device, let’s take a look.

According to latest reports, the Palm Pre has sole over 300,000 units since earlier this month. Of course, this number is much less than those of the iPhone 3GS but considering the Pre is a first-gen device they are still reputable numbers. Furthermore, reports say that Palm is increasing production to 15,000 units a day to prepare themselves for further sales.

What do you guys think, will the Palm Pre 2 or even 3 be able to oust the iPhone? Only time will tell.

Apple is excited to announce that the latest version of their popular iPhone line, the 3G S, has gone ahead and sold over 1 million copies since its June 19th release date. Apple front-man Steve Jobs was on hand to comment on the phone’s success:

Customers are voting and the iPhone is winning. With over 50,000 applications available from Apple’s revolutionary App Store, iPhone momentum is stronger than ever.

But that’s not all Apple was pleased to announce as they also let us know that the latest iPhone OS version, version 3.0, has been downloaded over 6 million times since it was released last week.

Does anyone out there still doubt that Apple is attempting to take over the world?

Is the iPhone 3G S going to be more successful than the iPhone 3G was in its first sales weekend? Well if we are to believe AT&T it looks that “hundreds of thousands” have pre-ordered the iPhone 3G S. That’s what Ralph De La Vega, president of AT&T has declared in an interview with CNBC. So what is the real number so far? How many hundreds of thousands have pre-ordered the new iPhone? Ten? If you were a betting person would you bet for or against Apple and AT&T selling more than a million phones in the first weekend? What can Sprint say now about its record Pre sales?

  • While we have already told you how JPMorgan estimated that Palm and Sprint have sold about 50,000 Pre units, none of the parties involved offered the actual number. Sprint has a press release saying that it had record sales for the first weekend but there’s no actual number. Instead Sprint manages to add to the mix a story of a lucky groom who wanted a Pre before the wedding. We’ll be waiting for the movie but the story starts like this:

On Saturday at 7 a.m., Theodore was 14th in line at an Atlanta-area Sprint store, fidgeting for his new Pre. His wedding was scheduled for 8 a.m. As much as Theodore wanted Pre, he wanted his bride, Anita, to see him at the altar at the appointed time. At 7:45, he abandoned his wait and left his line-number and credit card information with a Sprint store employee, asking that he “hold the 14th phone for me.”

Seriously speaking, Sprint has about 11 days to make the most of the Pre. The iPhone 3GS is coming and given Apple’s track record, the new iPhone will sell like hot cakes given the fact that it finally has most of the features we’ve wanted for two years now.

  • Palm and Sprint managed to sell about 50,000 Pre units in the opening weekend according to JPMorgan. What do you think about the number? Were you expecting a larger amount of sold Pres?

Palm and Sprint haven’t confirmed anything just yet but we expect them to tell us more about their first weekend performance. Can it be compared to the first-gen iPhone’s first weekend sales? It surely can’t be compared with the first weekend sales of the iPhone 3G. AT&T and Apple sold about 1,000,000 iPhone 3Gs last year in the opening weekend which is quite a performance. Will Apple steal potential Pre buyers with the new iPhone that is about to be unveiled? We’ll be monitoring closely the battle between Apple and Palm in the following weeks.

Wirefly announces there has been sharp growth in touchscreen phone sales and uncovers its Top Ten selling models. According to Wirefly, sales of touchscreen devices have grown 56% from the fourth quarter of 2008 to the first quarter of 2009 and currently account for 38% of its cell phone sales.

The two factors driving the sharp increase in popularity of touchscreen phones is the increased choice of devices and its affordability for even the most budget-conscious consumer. The top ten list is as follows:
    1) LG Vu                                                    6) Blackberry Storm
    2) Samsung Eternity                                  7) Samsung Instinct
    3) Samsung Behold                                    8) LG Dare
    4) LG Voyager                                            9) Motorola Krave
    5) LG Incite                                               10) HTC G1 with Google

  • Unlike other big names in the mobile business, Samsung managed to bring in some cash in the first quarter of 2009. Overall the company has done batter than in the last quarter of 2008 bringing in a total of $459 million. The sad part for Samsung is that a 72% drop compared to the same period of last yer. As for Samsung’s mobile division, it has grown 36% in revenue which is pretty good considering the current times. With all the phones Samsung announced at the beginning of the year, we’d be surprised for it not to make a profit. We expect Samsung to sell even more phones in the following months as more handsets will be unveiled.

It seems that AT&T aren’t the only ones making it through the recession unscatched. Apple has recently announced that their profits for the second quarter, which ended March 28th, were in the range of $1.21 billion.

Considering the slight decline in Mac sales, one would think that these numbers would be a bit lower. Well, Apple attributes their success to the iPod and iPhone stating that these strong sales are what helped them report their best non-holiday quarter ever.

These numbers are a surprise to even experts in the field, it’s clear that while everyone expected Apple to do well, they didn’t think it would be this well.

While Palm is relying on its future Pre to take it out of its misery, Sony Ericsson doesn’t have any hot phone coming soon. And the company isn’t doing that well either in terms of money making out of its cellphone business. First quarter of the year sales for Sony Ericsson have dropped 50%. That means a loss of around $500 million which is about double the loss of the quarter before. Let’s face it here, Sony Ericsson don’t have phones appealing to the average people going through this recession. What will happen when Ericsson will leave the partnership?

I don’t know if you’ve heard but Palm stated that the Q3 sales will be below expectations. In a recent statement Palm said that:

The revenue declines vs. the company’s second quarter of fiscal year 2009 and third quarter of fiscal year 2008 are the result of reduced demand for Palm’s maturing legacy smartphone products, the challenging economic environment and later-than-expected shipments of the Treo Pro in the United States. The company expects declining revenues and continued margin pressure from its legacy product lines in the fiscal fourth quarter.

The launch of the new Pre still remains on “track for the first half of 2009” as Palm CEO Ed Colligan explained. Will Pre keep Palm in the game? We’ve obviously seen that Palm is not ready to upset Apple with unnecessary statements, but will the Pre beat the iPhone this summer? Stay tuned to be the first who finds out!

  • You must remember that RIM has gone to great lengths to offer NTT DoCoMo customers a Bold with quad-band 3G support. Well it seems that something has gone terribly wrong. Out of 4,000 sold Bold handsets, more than 30 complaints have been received by DoCoMo. The keypad overheat while charging so DoCoMo has decided to let RIM investigate the matter. If we remember correctly Orange has decided to halt Bold sales in the UK last year. A coincidence? Well the problems with the Japanese version are unique according to RIM:

This issue appears to be specifically limited to the BlackBerry Bold devices sold in Japan since last week and sales of BlackBerry Bold devices in other countries are unaffected by this matter.

RIM hasn’t said that much but it did state that the batteries aren’t at fault here. When will DoCoMo restart Bold sales?

The latest news on everyone’s lips is the 10-K report that Apple released on November 5. All sales have gone up. The growth levels are even better across the international markets. Just take a look for yourselves at the picture above.

These reports shouldn’t really surprise anyone! Apple has been reporting great results all over 2008, and we already know that Mac and iPhone users are increasing every day! Despite their higher price and the current financial crisis. I myself think they deserve every penny. Macbooks, iMacs, iPods and iPhones are out of the box products which people have grown to love. So all I can say is, you go Apple! Microsoft, the ball is in your court now!
