The S60 platform that is used in many Nokia cellphones all around the world has received a serious support update, because Google Voice and S60 can now work together.
The announcement was made today at the Google Mobile Logo, and one of the cool features is the voice-based search, which lets users speak where they want to go, instead of having to type it down like it happens in most cases. The other good feature is the related to the google search shortcut that is placed at the home screen of any S60 mobile phone.

Symbian^4 is not yet available but we have started seeing it mentioned around the Internet. David Wood, the “Catalyst and Futurist” of the Symbian Foundation said in a recent interview that Symbian S60 will definitely be phased out in the near future. The Avkon API will be replaced by the UI toolkit Qt once Symbian^4 is available. That means that most S60 applications won’t be compatible with the future Symbian OS. In case you’re a developer you should take this into consideration before developing any hot app for Symbian S60. Symbian^4 will arrive later next year so better get ready for the imminent death of Symbian S60. What are your thoughts on that?

You thought that the E71 was a hot Nokia phone? Well apparently Nokia has a follower en route. The E72 is said follower and it appears it has been already posted and removed from YouTube. The phone will come with features like a 5 megapixel camera with auto-focus and flash, an optical trackpad, a 3.5mm headphone jack and Symbian S60 FP2 for OS. We have no idea when the E72 is actually coming and how much it will cost but we’ll be waiting close by for this one.

The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is here! Nokia’s first touch screen phone is among the company’s first devices to support Nokia’s “Comes With Music” service which offers one year of unlimited access to the entire Nokia Music Store catalog.
The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic features the Media Bar, a drop-down menu that provides direct access to music and entertainment, as well as web and online sharing. With Flash support, you can enjoy a bigger slice of the web. The phone comes with 8GB of memory, a graphic equalizer, and most importantly, a standard friggin’ 3.5 mm jack. The phone also boasts surround sound stereo speakers.

Hot on the heels of the 8-megapixel behemoth called the Innov8 comes yet another S60-powered device from Samsung, the i7110. Although not officially confirmed yet, from what we can glean from the picture, the i7110 seems to be a handsome-looking handset in a candybar form factor. As for the specs, all we know is that the device plays home to a 5-megapixel camera, runs on Symbian S60 operating system, supports microSD expansion, and might feature 3G/HSDPA support going by the front-mounted camera in the picture. The release may be set for as close as this autumn, so we wouldn’t be surprised if Samsung was prepping an official announcement already.

Well Nokia doesn’t seem to waste any time does it? After fully purchasing the Symbian platform and announcing it will be an open platform, it was rumored that Nokia will release their first touchscreen phone for the general public. That means it won’t be a high end smartphone but an affordable mid ranged handset. The device is supposed to hit the stores by the end of the year.

I was wondering when this would happen, but well, it happened today. Nokia will support Microsoft’s Silverlight platform (a competitor to Adobe’s Flash technology) with a view to deliver rich web applications on the S60 (Symbian OS) series of devices.
You may already know that Flash is available for S60 in the form of Flash Lite, but now Microsoft is aiming for a piece of the pie. Lee Williams, Senior VP for Nokia’s Devices software org claimed “Nokia aims to support market leading and content rich internet application environments and to embrace and encourage open innovation. By working with Microsoft, we are creating terrific opportunities and additional choices for the development community, S60 licensees and the industry as a whole.”
Like Flash, Silverlight is a cross-browser, cross-platform plug-in and is used on such websites as NBA.com and NBC Universal. With a mobile phone, the reach will be much higher. For a demo, check out the MIX08 conference on March 5 in Las Vegas. Developers can get their hands on Silverlight for S60 later this year.

In an open letter, Steve Jobs finally said it: Apple will be delivering an SDK for the iPhone, allowing third party developers to write new applications on the phone. While they want to make it an open platform to developers, the phone will also need to be protected against viruses and malware “that silently spread from phone to phone over the cell network”. Wow, scary picture there. However, the developer community can get its hands on the SDK next year – sometime in February – as Apple is still working on an “advanced system which will offer developers broad access to natively program the iPhone”.
What’s more, using the SDK you will also be able to develop applications for the iPod touch. Hopefully the SDK will be available for Windows and not just the Mac.
In other mobile developer news, Nokia announced a touch user interface for the popular Nokia S60 smartphones. This UI comes with support for tactile feedback – something missing on the iPhone – sending back a physical pulse when the user taps on the screen. There’s also a new UI Accelerator toolkit that allows device manufacturers to develop graphical effects and new types of interactions rapidly. With integrated Flash Video the web browser on the S60 phone can access sites such as YouTube.

A lot of us can’t have an iPhone. The fact that its service is monopolized by telecommunication giant AT&T, disallows just anybody – specially those in other countries outside the US – from getting the iPhone. But tech geeks won’t have that as an excuse. So, to enjoy the cool new interface of the iPhone, they developed an new theme for the S60 3rd edition.
This form of customization goes way beyond basic theme creation. The V-Theme uses the function of Flash to transform your s60 device into an iPhone-like UI.
The iTheme requires Flash 2.0 and above. It replaces your main standby and menu screens and comes with 3 pre-installed skins. The icons are self explanatory so you can figure out how to maneuver around. This is done by using the nav-key of your device. There are 2 menu screens that you can use. The main menu screen consists of customizable icons. Meaning that if you click on these icons, for example ‘Mail Tools’, you will be able to add your mail applications there in list format. If you click on basic you will be able to open targeted locations by clicking that particular icon.
