HP iPAQ Voice Messenger Smartphone

The HP iPAQ has been completely redesigned to produce a stylish mobile phone that is bound to get a lot of attention. The HP iPAQ Voice Messenger certainly looks the part.

It looks similar in stature to the RIM BlackBerry Pearl 8120 smart phone. Build quality feels solid, though the rear casing does squeak slightly when pressed and the glossy chrome finish on the rear is a fingerprint magnet.

The iPAQ Voice Messenger smartphone includes all the programs and features of Windows Mobile 6.1, including Excel, PowerPoint and Word Mobile applications, Windows Media Player, Google Maps and a range of PIM functions. It’s easy to configure for use with Microsoft Exchange, and you can also use standard POP3 and IMAP e-mail accounts, including Gmail and Yahoo! Mail. A suite of Windows Live applications includes Windows Live Messenger and Hotmail.

HP’s iPAQ Voice Messenger smartphone wins points for its looks, but not all of the design changes are welcomed. The optical controller is mediocre and the keypad is flat, making an otherwise competent handset frustrating to use.

  • Apple to Phase Out Free Apps

Thanks to a study conducted on the iPhone owners who download free applications for their iPhone, it looks like Apple will be phasing out the free apps and require application downloaders to pay for the apps that they want.

The reason behind this is to preserve the value of the applications to which only 30 percent of users who fetch new applications usually vacate them after the first install.

“Paid applications generally retain their users longer than free applications, although the drop-off is still pretty steep,” a Pinch Media spokesperson said.

Throughout the RIM BlackBerry Storm vs Apple iPhone debate, most people supported one phone over the other based solely on the number of free applications available for the device.

While both mobile phones do offer an online store to retrieve free and paid applications, smartphone users should base their choice on the quality and usability of the mobile device and not its app store.

INQ1, a social mobile handset from the Hutchison Whampoa company, won the the Best Mobile Handset award earlier at the GSMA in Barcelona. The INQ won the award over four other shortlisted contenders including the Nokia E71, T-Mobile G1, RIM BlackBerry Storm and LG KS360.

This award is the most coveted and fiercely contested prize in the mobile industry and is given to a device with the combination of design, technical excellence and functionality that comes together to position a product at the top of its market.

The INQ is an HSDPA handset that provides one-click access to fully integrated applications including Facebook, Skype, Windows Messenger and Last.fm. The intuitive navigation offered by the switcher key and menu carousel, along with instant information provided by the home screen widgets and the integrated phonebook, deliver an experience so intuitive that it’s easy and fun to stay connected.

The INQ has a 3.2MP camera that allows for photos to be directly uploaded to Facebook, while preloaded modem drivers mean the handset can double as a plug and play dongle.
