Verizon has yet to post its financial report for the second quarter of the year. We’ve already seen AT&T’s report but we’ll have to wait a couple of days until Big Red’s numbers will become public knowledge.
The company did however release its Q2 subscriber count. Verizon managed to add 1.1 million net subscribers which is 300k short of AT&T’s new additions number. That means Verizon currently sits on 87.7 million subscribers which is an impressive figure. AT&T is trailing behind but Verizon will keep its crown for now. We’ll be curious to see how these million subscribers translate into profits, but that report is coming on July 27 only.

We’ve seen various companies in the cell phone business posting their last quarter results. Some stayed atop of the market despite an impressive YoY loss, some barely managed to stay afloat, and some got huge profits despite actually owning a small market share.
Now it’s time for AT&T to send in its reports for Q2 2009. AT&T managed to activate 2.4 million iPhones in Q2 which basically means that AT&T sold most of these iPhones during the last month. 33% of these 2.4 million iPhones were activated by new customers. AT&T managed to add 1.2 million post paid subscribers and 0.2 million prepay subscribers which meant the carrier currently has 79.6 million subscribers which is 6.7 million more than last year.
As for revenue, this came in a $30.7 billion which is 1% lower compared to last year and net income came in at $3.2 billion which si 16% lower YoY. There you have it folks! AT&T is doing good but it could do a lot better.

Nokia has announced the numbers for the second quarter of the year and they don’t look very good. Nokia has sold 103.2 million handsets in Q2 which is 11% better than in Q1. As for the global market share, Nokia still holds an impressive 38% in Q2 which is 1% better than in Q1. And you’d expect Nokia’s profits to be up too right? Well that’s not what happened folks! Are you ready for this? Nokia’s operating profit for Q2 was of just 775 million Euros. That sounds like a lot but that’s 66% less than last year. Net sales dropped 25% in Q2 compared to last year which amounts to 9.9 billion Euros.
The hottest Nokia phones were the 5800 and the E71. The 5800 XpressMusic sold in 3.7 million units in Q2 while the E71 sold in 5 million units since it was launched.
What is Nokia expecting for the third quarter? Well the company will maintain its market share but it also expects device volumes to decline by 10% from 2008 levels. We’ll be waiting to see similar reports from the other big names in the industry. Is any manufacturer doing better than in 2008?

Didn’t Samsung release a UMPC with the same name? Yes they did, but that hasn’t stopped Samsung from naming its new mp3 player as the Q2. The Q2, though not a player that could change the PMP world, is pretty decent for a low-to-mid-end, no-frills player that is easy on the pocket (both in terms of cost and size). With DNSe 3.0 sound enhancement to provide a great listening experience and 50 hours of battery life to keep you humming even on your longest bus route uninterrupted, the Samsung Q2 also has a 2.4-inch TFT display, FM radio/recorder, picture/text viewer, and voice recording with support for mp3, wma, ogg, flac, wmv, and MP4 formats.
The Samsung Q2 will be available in a choice of white or black colors at the end of this month for $99.99 (8GB) and $129.99 (16GB).
