07 Jul 09 iPhone Dev Team releases jailbreak for iPhone 3GS

Despite purplera1n’s release not too long ago, the iPhone Dev Team has gone ahead and released their own version of an iPhone 3GS jailbreak entitled redsn0w.

Redsn0w 0.8 is reportedly “a stable jailbreak (unlike purplera1n)” so users who were having problems with GeoHot’s jailbreak might want to check this one out.

You can head over to the iPhone Download Blog for a tutorial on how to use redsn0w. Remember, proceed at your own risk.

06 Jul 09 Purplera1n supports Mac OS X, too

A few days ago we learned that GeoHot recently released an update for purplera1n, his iPhone jailbreaking solution, that would add both Windows 7 and 64-bit support. However, Mac OS X users were left in the dust with no alternative.

Luckily, GeoHot has again updated purplera1n this time adding that much sought after Mac OS X support.

Like always, if you plan on jailbreaking your iPhone using any method we describe on MobileWhack, do so with caution and at your own risk.

05 Jul 09 Jailbreak your iPhone 3GS with purplera1n; Unlock It with ultrasn0w

There you have it folks, the iPhone 3GS has been unlocked! The iPhone Dev Team hasn’t launched a new unlock software. And there’s no need to do so for now. Don’t try this at home, especially if technology kinda scares you away! What you have to do in order to unlock the new iPhone is to jailbreak it first using purplera1n and then unlock it using the ultrasn0w made by the iPhone Dev Team. That’s how it’s supposed to work although we won’t be surprised if the hack isn’t 100% efficient:

Louis said…Excellent Jailbreak program! RC2 seems to work better than RC1. Make sure you restore your iPhone 3GS with the original firmware 3.0 from Apple, then run Purplrra1n RC2 from Windows. You must have a valid ATT SIM card to activate the phone, then run Freeze to install Cydia. After rebooting, update Cydia and install ULTRASN0W, then you are ready to use any SIM card you have. Enjoy a jailbroken and unlocked iPhone 3GS!

The iPhone Dev Team will release it’s unlock solution once iPhone 3.1 OS is in place so you’ll have to be patient for a while!

04 Jul 09 purplera1n Has Now Windows 7 and 64-Bit Support

As you are already aware, there’s a jailbreak solution for the iPhone 3GS and it hasn’t been developed by the iPhone Dev Team. And while the Dev Team is still working on its own version, the purplera1n has been updated. The jailbreak solution has now support for that upcoming Windows 7 and it will work well on 64-bit systems too. Other improvements include various kernel patches, correction of terminal errors, an enhanced payload execution and more. Winterboard support is expected in a future version. OS X compatibility is also coming in a future update so hang on to your hats if you’re not using a Windows-based computer at home. And just in case you upgraded your iPhone to OS 3.1 then you should also put your jailbreaking thoughts at ease for now.

03 Jul 09 iPhone 3GS jailbreak made official, but not by iPhone Dev Team

Normally, an iPhone jailbreak doesn’t hit the scene until the Dev Team deems it appropriate. They even went so far as to delay the release of an iPhone 3GS jailbreak due to fear that Apple would discover and fix the hole they used. Well, it seems that an iPhone hacker by the name of GeoHot got sick of waiting for the Dev Team to release it and went ahead and released what he is calling ‘purplera1n’:

Normally I don’t make tools for the general public, and rather wait for the dev team to do it. But guys, whats up with waiting until 3.1? That isn’t how the game is played. We release, Apple fixes, we find new holes. It isn’t worth waiting because you might have the “last” hole in the iPhone. What last hole…this isn’t golf. I’ll find a new one next week.

GeoHot says that all you need to do is download the purplera1n file at www.purplera1n.com on a Windows (not 7) PC, run the file, connect your iPhone to iTunes, click “make it ra1n”, then “on bootup, run Freeze, the purplera1n installer app”.

Of course, this jailbreak is in its beta form so make sure you backup everything and do all of this at your own risk.
