After we’ve seen Nokia’s and Sony Ericsson’s Q2 reports, it’s clear that the mobile business wasn’t spared by the financial crisis. And while Sony Ericsson isn’t doing well at all, Nokia managed to keep its market share and get some profits. But the true winners seem to be RIM and Apple which hold just about 3% of the worldwide market. But they don’t seem to care since they managed to bring in 35% of the operating profits. That’s really impressive considering that the two companies are relatively new in the game. RIM and Apple have together surpassed Samsung and LG which hold about 30% of the market but managed to pull in just 20% of the profits.

Earlier today we reported to you that Nokia posted some pretty frightening numbers for for their Q2 profits and it seems that Sony Ericsson is in the same boat.
As a result of the shakey economy, SE was said to have shipped 13.8 million phones in Q2 of this year compared to the 24.4 million they shipped in Q2 of 2008. Furthermore, sales were down to €1.7 billion this year compared to last year’s €2.8 billion. To top it all off, they lost around €213 million in the same quarter.
President of Sony Ericsson, Dick Komiyama, comments on the hardships:
As expected, the second quarter was challenging and we still believe the remainder of the year will be difficult for Sony Ericsson. Our focus remains on bringing the company back to profitability and growth as quickly as possible, and our performance is starting to improve due to our cost reduction activities. The new product portfolio that integrates communications, entertainment and social media applications should contribute to healthier topline development when shipments start later this year. We remain confident that the actions we are taking will further improve our financial situation and strengthen Sony Ericsson’s competitiveness.
Let’s hope that Sony Ericsson, along with Nokia, return to greatness sooner rather than later.

Nokia has announced the numbers for the second quarter of the year and they don’t look very good. Nokia has sold 103.2 million handsets in Q2 which is 11% better than in Q1. As for the global market share, Nokia still holds an impressive 38% in Q2 which is 1% better than in Q1. And you’d expect Nokia’s profits to be up too right? Well that’s not what happened folks! Are you ready for this? Nokia’s operating profit for Q2 was of just 775 million Euros. That sounds like a lot but that’s 66% less than last year. Net sales dropped 25% in Q2 compared to last year which amounts to 9.9 billion Euros.
The hottest Nokia phones were the 5800 and the E71. The 5800 XpressMusic sold in 3.7 million units in Q2 while the E71 sold in 5 million units since it was launched.
What is Nokia expecting for the third quarter? Well the company will maintain its market share but it also expects device volumes to decline by 10% from 2008 levels. We’ll be waiting to see similar reports from the other big names in the industry. Is any manufacturer doing better than in 2008?

At the moment, the ongoing negotiations between AT&T and the Communications Workers of America (CWA) have expired and there is nothing definite on what to expect. And if there is a victim that will be caught in between these developments, it would be Apple’s widely popular iPhone.
Talks between the two sides turned for the worse as the telecom giant, which earned $12.8 billion in profits last year, threatened major cuts to employee health care. The union balked at the new contract proposal and is now mobilizing its 90,000+ strong workforce for a strike. If a workers strike hampers or shuts down service it will effect all iPhone users.
Apple has an exclusive arrangement with AT&T who serves as the only service provider for the iPhone. If a strike comes to fruition iPhone service could be severely degraded. If the strike lasts for an extended period it could steer many customers to other telecoms.
Trapped by their exclusive contract Apple could watch the strike derail iPhone sales as customers coming off contract turn to other services and, by default, other mobile phones.

Hewlett-Packard, the largest computer manufacturer in the world, has recently announced a 14% increase in their net profits for the third quarter. To be more specific, net income rose from $1.78 billion to $2.03 billion, with sales reaching as high as $28 billion.
HP attributes the recent profit increase to new notebook designs, saying it attracted more potential buyers to actually purchase HP machines.
Not too shabby considering all they did was splash some color and pretty designs onto their laptops. Good job HP!
