Once a software becomes irritating and fails to live up to the expectations of companies, you can expect that they will be replaced soon. And that is exactly what happened to Winscribe digital dictation systems as two of the leading Scottish Law Firms have replaced them with BigHand, a leading voice productivity specialist for the global legal community.
MacRoberts is currently in the process of implementing BigHand to 300 users across Edinburgh and Glasgow, and Simpson & Marwick has already completed its implementation to 175 users across 7 offices.
The final component in our decision to switch was the lack of support we received for Winscribe; it was very awkward to get a resolution as we had no direct access to the developer. BigHand’s implementation and support have been first class. “
Users prefer the BigHand interface and we have had such positive feedback, it is really great to deliver an IT project that makes such a difference to users’ lives - it’s not often that you receive such a positive response to an IT project. The final piece of the jigsaw is that we will be deploying BigHand for BlackBerry and Windows Mobile in the next couple of months.”
Well, that is business for you. If you cannot live up to the expectations and needs of a company, you are as good as gone. And in Winscribe’s case, they seem to be sorely lacking in this area. And if they don’t shape up, they may just find themselves being dominated by BigHand as far as preference is concerned.

The popular rugged handheld mobile computer by Motorola, the Motorola MC9090, has become the first product to enter the new partner certification program for ActiveMine, the premier wireless voice communications and locating system for mines.
The industry-leading MC9090 handheld mobile computer, combined with an innovative new software application from ACT vendor partner, Snively Inc., will enhance the operational and safety benefits available with ActiveMine. The MC9090 enables the reading and transmission of data from mining equipment via a bar code and future RFID integration. In addition, the MC9090 provides real-time access to voice and text communications for improved productivity and streamlined operations. Built to withstand extreme environments and loaded with Snively software, it will be distributed exclusively through a partnership with Snively.
The software application, called Safety Tracker, was designed by Snively to meet the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) compliancy and reporting requirements. By putting more information in the hands of mine managers, the MC9090 aids in trouble-shooting, decision-making and preventing unsafe equipment from entering mines. Safety Tracker runs on Active Mine’s wireless mesh Wi-Fi network to provide real-time data about equipment via the network. In addition, the MC9090 can be used to control other devices that operate on the ActiveMine network optimizing their performance.

August 22nd is the day when 20 more countries will receive the iPhone 3G. Apple is doing the best they can to increase iPhone production and thus to avoid future shortages. I don’t think they will be able to do it but it’s good to know they are trying. Foxconn, their manufacturer has production way up. At current speed they are producing no less than 800,000 iPhones 3G per week. This is above full capacity so we might expect possible failures in the future.
