If you still refer to Bruce Springsteen as “The Boss” or own more than one album of Mr. Mister, it means you are still stuck in the 80s and we have got just the thing for you (if you live in South Korea that is). Samsung has announced a Memories Special version of their popular YP-P3 portable media player that bundles 500 tracks from the 70s-80s era, courtesy of Mnet. The player itself gets few changes other than a modified UI to house the larger icons, karaoke support, and the ability to organize songs based on the user’s mood and will cost 279,000 Won ($232) when it is released in November. And no, we don’t know if it comes loaded with Y.M.C.A.

The SanDisk SlotRadio is a pretty simple device that comes ready to use with a microSD preloaded with 1,000 of hits selected from the Billboard charts. The user can choose from Country, Contemporary, Rock, Alternative, and R & B/Hip Hop If these preloaded tunes aren’t your cup of tea then you can just connect it to your computer and load up the tunes that you do like with drag and drop.
If you want an MP3 player, but don’t want to deal with the hassles of loading, or messing with iTunes, then you don’t have to. In other words, this may be the perfect Portable Media Player (PMP) for those who are not into messing around with electronics for hours on end. The device retails for around $99.00

Cowon has announced the launch of D2+, a successor to to its popular portable media player, the D2. So, what’s new in this iteration. As far as we can see, not much. The D2+ seems to have retained the same 2.5-inch 16-million-color touchscreen display, the same support for SD/SDHC/MMC, FM radio, TV-out, USB 2.0 connectivity, and support for MP3, WMA, Ogg, FLAC, and WAV in audio formats with H.264, MP4, and WMV9 video. BBE+ sound enhancement, which can already be found on the Cowon S9, makes an appearance along with a DMB TV tuner, which makes this new mp3 player only a marginal upgrade over the D2.
There are no details on pricing or availability, but considering the sucess of the D2, it would be wise for Cowon to stick to a worldwide release than just limited to Korea.

Much of Samsung’s latest media player, the YP-T08, has been borrowed from the YP-T10 that was released last year, but we will ignore that for the other improvements that it carries over its predecessor. While the YP-T10 was capable of 2 hours of video and 15 hours of audio playback, the YP-T08 takes a step ahead and provides up to 4 hours of video and 20 hours of DNSe 2.0 enhanced audio playback. It can play wmv and mp4 files for video while mp3, ogg, and wmv formats complete the audio support. There’s Bluetooth but it’s not clear if it supports the dual A2DP support that the YP-T10 had. This player is limited to China for now, but at 999 yuan (about $146), we would like it to stay that way.

Here’s one more device we may not see outside of Korea. The new PMP from TG Sambo looks great and has all the features you could ask for in a portable media player. The unnamed player has a generous 4.8-inch WVGA touchscreen display and runs on WinCE 5.0 with a nice-looking carousel menu. The large display is great for watching videos and to provide a great browsing experience on its Polaris browser in full screen aided by its 802.11b/g WLAN connectivity. The player packs a T-DMB receiver for some great digital TV action. With its 700Mhz Alchemy AU1250 processor, the PMP is pretty fast and with 16GB of Flash, it is well endowed on the memory side. There is full audio/video codec support along with an ebook reader, PowerDic dictionary, and get this, a flash player too.
There is no information on pricing yet but as always happens with good things we like, this looks destined to stay in Korea.

In some more post-CES news, iRiver has showcased their new portable media player, iRiver SPINN. The amazingly sleek design made me think of James Bond in a heartbeat. And yet, unlike some which has form yet lacks substance, it seems the SPINN has both. It features a 3.2-in. touch screen where you can watch clips, view images and choose tracks to play. If, for some reason, you have an aversion against touch screens, there’s always the little analog knob controller for you to use. It also features Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity with a microphone and is available in 4GB, 8GB and 16GB variants. No price or release date yet but I bet Bond could get one if he wants to. Lucky bastard.
