Until now the mobile version of the popular Wall Street Journal has been free, but according to CEO Murdoch that might change in the upcoming months, and the plan is to charge $2 per week for everyone that wants to have access to the mobile version of the journal.

If paying $2 per week to read news on your mobile phone is not your cup of tea there are other options, such as paying for the print version which gives you a 50% discount for the mobile version.

According to Murdoch, this move is needed to increase revenue because ads aren’t paying as much as they did in the past.

  • Do Cell Phones Cause Cancer?

Here’s a question I encountered one too many times. Is any form of cancer related to the use of cell phones? We’re about to find out soon. Interphone researchers have a large study to fully analyze. They are studying 6,400 tumors in patients from 13 countries. Early next year we will find out the results but we have a hint to what the study will say.

So here are some sneak peaks while we wait the final results. Regular cell phones users have a 50% more likely chance to get brain tumors than non-users. Are there any non-users? UK and Scandinavian cell phone users have a 40% greater tumor risk in people that have used the phones for 10 years than those that haven’t gotten that far. I’ve used mine for less than 10 but I am sure I’ll use cell phones for a lot of years to come no matter what the results will be!

  • Take Your Cell to the Grave

Not the most pleasant story I read today but still what I’m about to tell you is pretty interesting. John Jacobs was a defense attorney but he died three years ago from pancreatic cancer. He was buried with a fully charged Motorola T270 which had a $55 Verizon plan. You’ll be surprised to find out that his wife has been paying the subscription ever since. The phone is engraved on the gravestone itself and the wife and sons use it to leave voicemail to the husband. As I said earlier, not the most pleasant story especially now before Christmas but it just might be a great, yet expensive, therapy method.

Nokia announced that it expects its mobile device market share in Q3 2008 to be lower than in Q2, citing weaker consumer confidence in worldwide markets. This does not mean there will be a decline in mobile device volumes in 2008, which the Finland giant expects to grow 10% or more from the 2007 volumes, estimated at 1.14 billion units.

Other reasons cited by Nokia include:

    • Nokia’s decision to not meet aggressive pricing of competitors
    • Overall market competition including entry-level markets
    • Slower ramp-up of mid-range Nokia devices

Product launches and start of shipments will be on track for Q3 and Q4. The Q3 2008 results will be reported by the company on October 16, 2008.

Here’s a bad news for anyone traveling to and from the USA. The Department of Homeland Security can take steal your laptop and take it to any location where they could share it with any agency what-so-ever in order to investigate your laptop’s contents. The same thing goes for any other smart devices which can transport any kind of data (read iPods and smartphones too).

  • Fired! All this talk about cell phones, smartphones, upgrades and updates, cool programs and firmware bugs, new releases and leaked photo doesn’t always do us that good. Last week an 18 years old boy died in London after an argument related to a stolen cell phone. That boy played a role in the last Harry Potter.

But I am here to tell you that no matter how busy you are and no matter what fast SMS software you would like to use, never ever go firing someone via SMS. They might get depressed, commit suicide and then sue you for all you have.

Tony Cecere was fired via SMS. That is simply rude! And he was asked to bring the work car back. That’s really rude! A day after all this happened he committed suicide. Apparently he was suffering from some mental affection but his wife said it was this SMS that got him to act that way. His family are to receive $300,000 as damages from the Union, as sentenced recently in court.

It makes me said to get these news in! Sometimes the silly use of technology can have unforeseen consequences. Be careful what you you use your cell phone for!

  • NPD, the leader in market research for the wireless industry, said that the mobile phone handset sales to consumers in the U.S. reached nearly 31 million units in the first quarter of 2008. Some of you might say this is a lot, but in fact, this is a 22 percent decline since the same period a year ago.

The manufacturer that did maintain its lead in the U.S. market is Motorola. However, its share of unit-sales declined from 35 percent in Q1 2007 to 27 percent this year. In addition, RIM Blackberry improved its ranking, edging out Sanyo as the fifth largest mobile phone manufacturer based on the number of handsets sold in the U.S. in Q1 2008.

Here is breakdown of the top five manufacturers’ share of units sold in Q1 2008:
    Motorola - 27%
    Samsung - 18%
    LG - 17%
    Nokia - 8%
    RIM Blackberry - 5%

    Apple 3G iPhone

If analyst reports are to be believed, the 3G iPhone will be announced on June 9, the anticipated date of the Apple WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference). Apart from the much-awaited 3G version of the phone, analysts predict a slew of updates to the Mac and iPod line-ups.

It appears that Apple iPhone inventories are not keepking up with demand which is still strong - and the company could easily reach the 10 million mark. I’ll be honest for a bit here: I am not a huge fan of the iPhone, and I believe 10 million is a pretty low number. Reason? The excessive price. Well, that might soon change, with analysts expecting the price to drop to US $299 or $349 (it is currently priced at $399).

  • mobilemarket.jpgMobile browsers built-into your cellphones, PDA’s, and even your MP3 players (iPod Touch) have changed the outlook of a lot of people when it comes to mobile devices. A lot of people have finally realized the potential of this technology. Now, browsers in mobile devices have very limited capabilities, however, a lot of features are slowly being added into it and in fact, websites are changing their pages to tailoring it to the mobile browser market.

It is then no surprise when ABI research, a leading market research firm focused on the impact of emerging technologies on global consumer and business markets, reported that the mobile browser market will probably grow to 1.5 Billion units by 2013.

The mobile browsers won’t probably be able to catch up to the PC-based browsers, but its definitely getting there. As mentioned, the things that are hindering mobile browsers, are its limitation, like the absence of important plug-ins such as Flash, AJAX, and the memory constraints of many phones.

ABI Research’s new study, The Mobile Browser Market analyzes the market for mobile browsing, examining the primary commercial offerings from independent browser vendors as well as evaluating the growing important of open-source solutions such as Webkit. The report also looks at the push towards web applications and the use of widgets for mobile devices.

  • Goodbye Moto? Say it Ain’t So!

Okay, I was overreacting. Motorola isn’t really shutting down, they’re just considering spinning off their mobile phone unit due to the recent slump in figures caused by their lackluster performance after the phenomenal success of the RAZR. Still, a bit more into the slump and they might as well say sayonara. Strangely, right after they announced their plans to sell their mobile phone unit, the company’s stocks soared. I guess you should announce something like this every other day, Moto.

As if porn on the internet isn’t enough, the porn industry is planning on taking over the mobile phone world too. Will USA follow suit? The adult industry needs a new media to conquer the masses. What do you think — should mobile porn be allowed or shouldn’t it?

  • kwiry Viral Marketing Platform

Here’s an interesting service from kwiry: the company announced the launch of kwiry.com, a viral platform for advertisers, TV/radio networks and others to use text messages to drive traffic from mobile phones to their websites. Once you respond to a partner’s ad, kwiry can reach you when you are back online.

The platform essentially turns each text message into a potential page view from the kwiry user community. For example, GamePro Magazine uses kwiry to drive its print readers to GamePro.com. Companies can also avoid the use of confusing URLs to drive people to specific content on their website. Other useful services offered by kwiry include the kwiry reminder service where your text messages are converted into reminders that can be retrieved online.

    Viral marketing. Oh, well.

  • LG Eyes 100-million Club

    LG Viewty

Now there’s an uphill task for LG: the Korean company is targeting 100 million mobile phones across the globe. Given the company’s recent successes with phones such as the Chocolate and the Prada, LG is planning to break into the 100-mil club. Samsung is already there, and of course, Nokia is at the top of the list.

Upcoming phones in the company’s warchest include the 5-megapixel LG Viewty and a slew of unnamed/unidentified phones that cross the FCC’s stringent tests.

Hopefully LG will have a good 2008 and beat out the likes of Sony Ericsson.
