Just like last year, when AT&T was preparing for the iPhone 3G, the carrier is talking about network upgrades right before the new iPhone arrives. AT&T is now getting ready to upgrade its nationwide 3G network to the next logical step, 7.2Mbps HSPA. The actual upgrade won’t be finalized by the time you purchase your third generation iPhone as it is scheduled to begin for later this year. By the end of 2010 you should be able to take advantage of faster HSPA connectivity. Next year LTE will also start testing so AT&T might just be the carrier to watch.
AT&T will not stop there. It will further increase the stability of its current network by adding more cell sites and connecting current cell sites to a fiber-optic backbone and it will also increase the availability of such devices like femtocells and microcells which will improve the signal indoors.
In the mean time let’s see if AT&T will be better prepared to deal with the new iPhone spree.
