White Space is a term used in telecommunications used to describe frequencies that should be used for broadcasting although but not used anymore. So guess what happened after everyone was forced to switch to digital TV? A bunch of frequencies out there were turned into white space so we should see plenty of networks use the freed up bands in the near future.

The first white space network is currently running in an experimental stage in Claudville, Virginia. The town’s school and computer center were equipped by Dell, Microsoft and the TDF Foundation but we have no white space network performance reports yet. Hopefully everything goes well so other similar rural areas can upgrade their current Internet connections.

  • If you happen to live in Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, LA or Miami and you happen to be one of AT&T’s paying subscribers then you should be happy to know that AT&T is getting ready to bring your full HSPA 7.2Mbps to your neighborhood. You should expect the service to be available by the end of the year but unfortunately that “theoretical” 7.2Mbps speed will not be available any time soon. You’ll have to simply get used to “real-world downlink and uplink speeds” which will be “less than the theoretical peak and will vary based on a number of factors, including location, device, and overall traffic on the local wireless network at a given time.” By 2011 AT&T will about 90% of its current 3G network footprint will get HSPA 7.2 and maybe by that time we’ll actually be able to take advantage of the full download and upload speed.

In the mean time AT&T will also work on a bunch of other projects meant to enhance your whole wireless experience:

    • An initiative to substantially expand the wireless spectrum serving 3G customers in hundreds of markets across the country, using high-quality 850 MHz spectrum. This additional spectrum expands overall network capacity and improves in-building reception. Deployments of this 850 MHz spectrum are about 90 percent complete today, with local roll-outs recently completed in New York, Atlanta and Houston.
    • Addition of about 2,000 new cell sites to our network in 2009, expanding service to new cities and improving coverage in other areas.
    • Enabling widespread access to our Wi-Fi network – the largest in the country with more than 20,000 hotspots in all 50 states – to qualifying customers, allowing them to take advantage of the best available AT&T mobile broadband connection.
    • Preparation for field trials of 4G LTE wireless networks next year, with deployment planned to follow in 2011. This schedule aligns with industry expectations of when a wide variety of compatible 4G wireless devices will be available.

So what do you say? How’s your AT&T experience?

  • It looks like Seth The Blogger Guy is probably the only blogger that’s not angry with AT&T for some reason. In this 3-minute video he explains why AT&T’s network is not as speedy as its customers want it to be and he’s saying that AT&T is working around the clock to offer a better, faster network in the future. Well then maybe AT&T should consider changing some of their ads, to reflect the real potential of their current network and not tell everyone how AT&T’s network is really fast.

One more important thing this short video confirms is the availability of MMS messaging on the iPhone. AT&T has been working for months to prepare “the radio access controllers in our network to support this launch.”

So what have we learned so far? Well AT&T is certainly not the best network out there but the future might look a lot better. Let’s see what happens when AT&T looses that iPhone exclusivity! Will people move to other carriers? Such a thing will definitely improve the quality of AT&T’s data transfer speeds…

  • If you’re a Rogers Wireless subscriber then you should know that the carrier is getting ready to launch its impressive 21Mbps HSPA+ network. Rogers will increase download speeds starting this August in the Greater Toronto Area. Other cities in Canada will see similar speed bumps “quickly over the coming months.” While Canadians will enjoy this significant speed increase from 7.2Mbps to 21Mpbs, AT&T customers will have to wait some more until LTE will be available since AT&T will not be launching a HSPA+ network. So, Rogers customers, let us know how the upgrade is working out for you!

What you see above is no ordinary router, oh no, it’s Ruckus Wireless’ Zone Flex 7762 $2,000 outdoor router. And no, it’s not made of gold.

Anyways, this router apparently uses integrated BeamFlex Smart Antenna technology that will result in higher performance, extended coverage and a ridiculously high level of consitency. Couple that with its 802.11n technology and built-in heater for those cold nights and you have yourself a perfect outdoor router solution.

Ruckus Wireless markets this particular piece of hardware towards commercial use such as outdoor pool areas at hotels and resorts as it’s a bit expensive to be justified for at-home use

The result? It’s a draw! It’s not that the iPhone 3GS is not faster! It’s more likely that AT&T’s current 3G network can’t be used yet to show the iPhone’s true potential. If you got excited about the whole Speed coming with the 3GS you should be pretty bummed right now. Sure your new phone has a faster processor and it can record video, but it fails where it really shouldn’t. That connectivity speed is not attainable just yet.

The speed test above was conducted in Chicago and it clearly shows that the iPhone 3GS won’t be better than the 3G model. It’s just a little faster at downloads with 1202kbps for the 3GS vs 1161kbps for the 3G and similar when it comes to uploads speed. Latency-wise it does a little better with numbers at 175ms vs 210ms.

So folks, there you have it! You should be just fine with your iPhone 3G at least until AT&T has deployed and thoroughly tested the new 7.2Mbps network. For now AT&T hasn’t even rolled out the public trial of this upgraded 3G network which means that only AT&T personnel would have access to it. Basically any speed test conducted in the Chicago area would have been done on AT&T’s regular 3G network which better explains the similar performance of the iPhone 3GS and 3G. We hope that by the end of the year those bars in the graph above will significantly change in favor of the 3GS as AT&T will finish upgrading its 3G network. When that happens, you should have no problem ditching your iPhone 3G in favor of the new model.

  • You can imagine that any decent carrier out there wants to get its hands on the iPhone 3GS and make the most of it. Such a carrier might be Telus and despite being a CDMA-based carrier it would definitely go for the iPhone 3GS. There’s nothing official just yet but it looks like Telus is going to sell the iPhone 3GS in October as soon as its brand new HSPA network will be properly launched. What will Rogers and Fido have to say about it? We’ll just have to wait and see how this one plays out folks.

In a recent study by In-Stat, only 11 percent of all wireless users are on 3G networks. Presently in the US we have four major wireless carriers to choose from and all deliver 3G and one, Sprint, even delivers 4G via WiMax.

As GSM rivals rush to launch their 4G LTE networks, it is hard to admit that broadband mobile speeds are actually still a luxury. Right now there are only nine WiMax network deployed worldwide which goes to show that 2G networks are not exactly extinct yet.

  • In 2008 and in Q1 2009 AT&T has added 75 new New York metro cell sites. Was that good for you? Did you feel any changes? During the last 15 months AT&T subscribers living in the New Jersey, New York and Long Island areas should have noticed significant improvements. That doesn’t necessarily mean that everyone is absolutely happy with AT&T’s services. And we can’t but wonder when will other markets suffer similar upgrades?

Here’s what AT&T has been working on in 2008:

    • Along I-78 in Hunterdon County west of Exit 11 and between Exit 33 and I-287 in NJ
    • Along the West Side Highway from 7th Avenue to West 10th Street in Manhattan
    • The Sprain Brook Parkway from Route 100C to 100 and I-684 near Goldens Bridge in Valhalla, NY
    • The Long Island Expressway near Exit 51 in Huntington Station, NY
    • Perrineville, Prospect Plains, Union Valley & Applegarth Roads all in Monroe Township in Middlesex County, NJ
    • Main Street and Ocean Avenue in Northport, NY
    • The Southern State and Sagtikos Parkways in Bayshore, NY

And here are the most recent network improvements.

    • The NJ Transit line in Glen Rock, NJ
    • Todt Hill Road in Staten Island
    • Howells Road and the Sunrise Highway in Bayshore, NY
    • Greenwich Village from Washington Square Park to East 12th Street, Central Park South
    • The Upper East Side from East 82nd to East 91st Street in Manhattan

If you have been noticing better AT&T service areas let us know.

T-Mobile has the youngest 3G network in the USA and the carrier seems more than interested to expand it this year. A company memo apparently got leaked and from what we can all see in the picture above, T-Mobile’s 3G network will significantly expand over the year. Each month during Q2 to Q4 we will see more cities getting that much needed 3G coverage. While you might get anxious already, we would advise you to sit tight and wait for official confirmation.
