The Japanese company NEC has presented one of the worlds smallest WiMAX routers with WiFi that have been produced until this day, at least according to “them”.
Also known as Aterm WM3300R, this router can go to speeds such as 40Mbps on downstream, and 10Mbps for upstream. While the main purpose of this small sized device is to use WiFi, you can use it on your computer thanks to a USB adapter. As for the lithium-ion battery, it can last 2.5 hours, but it can easily be recharged.
The NEC Aterm WM3300R will cost approximately $270 and will become available in April 2010.

On top of the LaVie L that we mentioned today, NEC has presented yet another unit that goes into the notebook category, it is the LaVie M.
The technical specifications of the LaVie M aren’t too powerful, but there is one detail that is above the average - the battery life that can last up to 8 hours and a half - thanks to its “enhanced battery system”. In the inside of the LaVie M you can find an Intel Celeron SU2300 processor running at 1.2 GHz, a hard-drive of 320GB, and 4GB of RAM.
The 13-inch LaVie M will become available in 3 different colors, including red, white, and black.

We weren’t expecting this to happen but that doesn’t mean we’re not anxious to see what handsets these three companies are going to bring us. NEC, Casio and Hitachi are going to work together next year to deliver new mobile devices. The deal will be inked in April 2010 and the new trio will become the second-largest venture in Japan after Sharp. We’d like to tell you we have an idea of what phones to expect from NEC Casio and Hitachi but unfortunately we really don’t. We can only hope to be pleasantly surprised sometime later next year by the first NEC Casio and Hitachi mobile phones.

It’s not every day that we hear about new Linux phones so we definitely should check them out. Panasonic and NEC seem not to care about Android, Windows Mobile or Symbian OS that much. They seem to prefer LiMo instead. In fact they love it so much that they have announced a daring project which involves creating nine new Linux phones. KDDI and Immersion Corp will work on those phones but LiMo is also hoping for other important manufacturers to be impressed by the initiative. What about you? Would you buy a cheaper touchscreen smartphone running on Linux? Can’t wait to see when these new phones will be officially unveiled.

There’s good news for everyone charging their phones in Europe. It looks like there’s a phone charging standard coming to all those European handset owners. The European Commission has received today confirmation for that micro-USB charging socket from the most important names in the mobile business. Nokia, Sony, Ericsson, Motorola, Apple, LG, NEC, Qualcomm, RIM, Samsung and Texas Instruments are all going to play ball and we should expect them to launch devices ready to be charged via a micro-USB charger sometime next year. On the long run the micro-UBS standard could be adopted by other markets too since CTIA, OMTP and the GSM Association also support it. Can’t wait for the day when I won’t hate myself for forgetting a certain phone charger! What are your thoughts on this?

And it’s going to be really tough choosing the right phone with so much fierce competition between the big names in the industry. We’ll be bringing you a lot more information this Monday so stick around!

Here is good news for phone owners who want better images. NEC has reportedly shipped samples of their CE 131 image processing LSI chips which can be used in camera phones. The said chip allows up to 8MP or 1.6 times better resolution than the standard phone cameras today.
The LSI sits between the CMOS sensor and application processor in a mobile phone. It displays signals from the sensor on the device’s screen and makes the signals printable.
The CE131 has an interface for a 512Mbit external memory, allowing for the processing of much larger image data than the existing model.
Each LSI sample chip is said to be worth $33. Actual production will commence in October.

The USB 3.0 might be closer than it appears. The USB Promoter Group finalized the “SuperSpeed” USB 3.0 specification today and we are to expect more details to emerge soon.
Flash drives and hard drives are expected to be the first devices to take advantage of the new technology but we’re at least 8 months away from an USB 3.0 product release. The second half of 2009 or even later will bring us the new USB 3.0 ready drives.
How fast is USB 3.0 you ask? Well imagine a 25GB HD movie. With USB 1.0 you would copy it in 9.3 hours. With current USB 2.0 you would do it in 13.9 minutes while with USB 3.0 the job is reduced to 70 seconds. We’re looking forward to a hands-on experience, whenever that will happen! Let’s see what Intel, Microsoft, NEC and Texas Instruments are going to do with the whole USB 3.0 thing!

A few days ago, NEC has released a Hello Kitty laptop named LaVie G. It’s decorated with Swarovski crystals and kills us all with Hello Kitty’s cuteness. A friend I’ve sent the pic to said, “at least the base color isn’t pink.” Hah. I think NEC was just waiting for the right moment to reveal the pic of the pink-colored LaVie G. I bet Japanese Hello Kitty fangirls and gadget geeks have gushed “kawaii” (translation: cute) when they saw the pic. The laptop sells at USD$1840 and in my opinion, you’d have to be not just a casual Hello Kitty fanatic to shell out that much cash for a laptop with Hello Kitty’s face on it.
