Telmap’s NAVTEQ iPhone app

Telmap is selling a new navigation system for the iPhone that uses NAVTEQ maps as well as MapQuest and Orange. It also has the other bells and whistles such as turn-by-turn guidance, in-car and pedestrian modes, as well as live traffic.

Of course, this Telmap comes at an awkward time since Google Android 2.0’s new free Navigation system. I mean, why would anyone pay for something that they can get for free?

Nokia 500 PND Uses Navteq Technology

The Nokia 500 PND we have featured last year in Mobilewhack has recently been released. Nokia’s second and newest PND is using Navteq’s updated, high-quality pan-European maps. To refresh everyone’s memories, the Nokia 500 features a 4.3″ touch screen which maximizes the Navteq maps for your usage. There’s even voice instruction capability and the functionality to view visual images of signposts and motorway exits. With the use of the recently update Navteq maps, you’re getting up-to-date information on your personal navigation device.

NAVTEQ Acquired by Nokia

175px-Nokian_logo.svg.pngIn business news, Nokia announced its acquisition of NAVTEQ. The acquisition has cost Nokia $78 in cash for each share of NAVTEQ including outstanding options for an aggregate purchase price of approximately $8.1 billion (EUR 5.7 billion), or approximately $7.7 billion (EUR 5.4 billion) net of NAVTEQ existing cash balance.

NAVTEQ, a provider of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data, is growing fast with the boom in the navigation department with location-based services expanding rapidly into mobile communications devices.

NAVTEQ will continue to provide the most advanced and flexible map data platform to navigation industry players. With NAVTEQ, Nokia will further strengthen its location based services offering and bring to market the most innovative, context aware Nokia Internet services with accelerated time to market.
