A Polish developer going by the handle of Marcin-PRV has done what can only be termed as useless, if not for a tiny dose of nostalgic introspection when Windows 3.1 brought us the graphic interface that we are so accustomed to today.  Using DOSBox, a freeware DOS emulator, he was able to port over the operating system from the days of yore by Microsoft and work on it too.  Not much utility there except for the “It can be done” factor, I guess.

Eleven days ago we talked about the Nokia N96 being available for purchase at BestBuy stores, for $900 with a 2-year contract and unlocked. A good deal? You decide, but it seems like a good bargain.

If you are interested in other unlocked Nokia cellphones besides the N96, there are some good news because Best Buy added the Nokia E71 and N95 models to their catalog. In case of the N95, it is the 8GB version.

As for the prices, they are exclusive for people that sign a 2-year contract with T-Mobile: E71 goes for $460, while the N95 is priced at $700.

  • Nokia N95 8GB FCC Redux

    Nokia N95 8GB

The Nokia N95 8GB has re-appeared at the FCC. This appears to be a minor update to the hugely popular smartphone. While the FCC documents filed by Nokia are cryptic at best, we managed to find some photographs of a battered N95. While the associated user manual does not have any information on what update the N95 has undergone, you can still go through it if you’ve misplaced your copy.

The Nokia N95 8GB costs US $779, and currently seems to be out of stock.

  • Relevantis Announces Map Advertising

    Relevantis Mobile Map Advertising

Relevantis unveiled the first advertising platform supporting paid icons for interactive maps and navigation systems. The platform essentially places branded icons on the map, allowing customers to interact with advertisers at the touch of a button. The map publisher ends up getting a cut.

The platform supports placing an icon on the map, which the user can then interact with in a rich manner. You may receive a coupon from an advertiser, allowing you to call them directly or get directions. Advertisers are charged based on the number of impressions their icon receives, or the number of actions (an action can be click-for-coupon) enabled.

Not just mobile phone maps and in-car navigation systems, the platform works with desktop/online map products as well.

About 100 cars equipped with the Nokia 95 and driven by University of California students traveled a 10-mile highway stretch near San Fransisco to demonstrate how real-time traffic stats can be obtained using GPS-enabled cell phones. Conducted by Nokia in association with UC Berkley Research Facility, this experiment was carried out using a special software developed by Nokia to aggregate individual GPS feeds and combine it to create a real-time traffic picture. All data sent was completely anonymous and encrypted, keeping privacy concerns at bay. The special software on the N95s used during the test sent periodical speed and location readings based on the integrated GPS system.

With congestion causing 4.2 billion hours of travel in USA alone, Nokia believes that this very well could be the answer, with only 5% of drivers needing to contribute for the system to work on any given highway. The driver can also opt to turn off their GPS feed if unwilling to share position data from their device. Given the steady increase of cell phones with integrated GPS, this innovative idea cannot entirely be ruled out and could pave the way for a better traveling experience.

During the CES 2008 Convention, people were notified of the release of a hot red version of the popular Nokia N95. In Japan, Softbank customers are also promised a red handset under the name Softbank X02NK. We’re finally seeing the handset in the flesh (or plastic), as the model which scorches you raw as a hot day out having summer barbecue is finally available to US customers. The catch — there’ll only be 5,000 red N95 handsets available for the first quarter of 2008. Eviiiilll! They’ll do anything to get a “limited edition” tag on a handset, won’t they? If you’re interested (as I am), the bright-red Nokia N95 will be available for US$599.

The Nokia N95 multimedia computer has just been voted as the European Media Phone for the year 2007-2008. Tough luck for the iPhone. European Imaging and Sound Association (EISA), Europe’s leading association for consumer electronics, praised the Nokia N95 as containing “practically every feature one could imagine in a mobile device.” Additionally, the award citation of the EISA jury goes on to say: “It’s no mere mobile phone and no mere status symbol. Pick up a Nokia N95 and you hold in your hands a state-of-the-art communication tool - the ideal way to remain permanently in touch and on track with the world that surrounds you.”

Nokia N95 with features such as GPS, 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and MPEG4 video capture of up to 30 fps has won the approval of these critics. EISA even highlighted the device’s data access of up to 3.5 Mb/s, advanced web browser, Wi-Fi, microSD slot, and audio reproduction of multiple audio formats.

EISA is a consumer technology awards association, and comprises of nearly 50 prominent Photo, Video, Audio, Home Theater and Mobile Electronics magazines from 18 European countries.

News has just been released that the N95, Nokia’s flagship phone, is now available through the 3 store. However, the downside is that it is not available on a 12-month contract. The prices of the handset will vary ranging from £15 Price Plan up to £35 Price Plans. The higher price plans mean zero charge for the handset.

The Nokia N95 is part of the company’s Nseries line of smartphones. The N95’s features include standard features of s60 3rd edition platform with feature pack 1. The phone utilizes a two-way slider allowing access to media playback buttons or a keypad, but not both simultaneously.

The N95 is also compatible with the whole Three X-Series software suite. For some who don’t know about it, X-Series from 3 is a mobile broadband offering. It is priced like fixed line broadband. X-Series customers are charged a fixed monthly subscription, which in addition to ordinary calling minutes and texts, includes X-Series mobile broadband services, including normal internet access when mobile.

So for all of you out there, it’s finally out, so you can probably start lining up and try to get one right now.

300px-Nokia_N95_DarlaMackFlickr.jpgEver wondered how many units Nokia has sold? Well, today, Nokia confirmed that it has sold over 100 million cellphones this spring, solidifying its dominance of the global cellphone business. The results for this year is significantly higher than the result of last year by 29 percent. This growth was attributed to its dominance in smartphone sales. Over 9 million N-series and 2 million E-series were sold. Their front line phone is the Nokia N95 smartphone.

This result placed Nokia ahead of Samsung, Motorola, Sony-Ericsson and LG. Apple on the other hand, with its iPhone, needs to catch up with this mobile phone giants. Apple chief Steve Jobs projected that the company will sell about 10 million iPhones by the end of 2008, or about 1 percent of the market as it was in 2006.

But experts predict that Apple will play a major role in the market with their iPhone. “The iPhone is likely to have a disproportionately large impact on the industry,” IDC mobile director Shiv Bakhshi said. “It could forever alter the structural relationship between device vendors and mobile operators who have traditionally controlled the mobile environment, especially in the US.”
