I am not a huge fan of slider phones, but I have to admit I took more than 5 minutes to check the new 3G Motorola Z8m out. This slider is a little bit special than its competition in terms of design. It’s meant to adjust to the shape of your face. I don’t know if this feature will really influence the quality of our phone calls but it certainly is really innovative at least. The Z8m is the third Z8 version and will be launched in Korea. The starting price is somewhere around $500.
This is what the new edition of Motorola Z8 has to offer: the upgraded HSDPA - from 3.2 to 7.2Mbps, the regular QVGA 2.2 inch display and the 2 megapixel camera. There’s of course the one touch MP3 player, the Bluetooth and USB 2.0 for data transfers and integrated and very useful GPS systems. As for space you have an 80MB internal memory available to start from and as you go along getting more pictures and music, the micro SD option that lets you store up to 4GB of data.
What could you possible want more from Motorola? A drop in price maybe.

Nokia has yet another music phone that got the FCC approval today. Termed the RM-242 - no, that’s just the FCC ID - the phone is clearly a music phone judging by its facade. It features play/pause buttons right in between the answer/hang-up keys. The phone comes in a slider form factor and appears to be a Java-based phone. It’s got a 3.2 megapixel camera (supporting video). It is 3G-compatible (WCDMA 850 and 2100 are supported) and is a quad-band GSM world phone.
The phone features a 2.5mm audio connector, as well as USB interface for data sync. For additional memory, it supports microSD memory cards. There’s also support for Nokia Xpress audio messaging. Other usual goodies include FM radio, Visual Radio, Voice Recorder, Equalizer, and Push-To-Talk support.
No word on the pricing yet, but the new Nokia phone should hit the markets soon.

There are a couple of two new flash MP3 players from mpio. They seem to be mostly targeted at first-time users, seeing that they offer only flash memory, that too in the low capacities of 1GB and 2GB. The new models are the ML300 (1GB) and ML300 (2GB). With support for both MP3 (8 to 320 kbps) and WMA (32 to 355 kbps), a useful feature on the ML300s is the ability to record voice, which can be helpful in taking down notes and sudden bursts of idea.
Both models feature a blue-backlit 4-line display. When connected to your computer’s USB drive, it can double up as a mass storage device. There’s an added bonus in the form of an FM radio receiver. The built-in equalizer has 8 presets. mpio claims an audio playback time of about 15 hours on a single AAA alkaline battery, but YMMV.
Measuring 28.2mm x 19.3mm x 65.9mm, the mpio ML300 1GB and 2GB models weigh in at 23 grams and are available for ¥4,980 (US $44) for the 1GB model and ¥6,980 (US $62) for the 2GB model.

Sony today announced the availability of two new Series of digital media players in Europe – the WALKMAN A Series and S Series. The NWZ-A810 & NWZ-S610/S510 Series will support an open platform and include support for Windows Media technology, providing greater choice for downloading and managing music, video and photo collections.
The players support security-enhanced Microsoft Windows Media Audio (WMA), as well as non-secure AAC and MP3 music formats, plus JPEG files for photos, in addition to the AVC (H.264/AVC) Baseline Profile and MPEG-4 video codecs. Users can download movie trailers, music videos, podcasts and clips from a variety of website destinations. As long as the videos are compressed in the appropriate codec, resolution and size they will work with the new WALKMAN players.
With these new WALKMAN players, Sony has widened its digital music environment to support Windows Media technology. The company will be moving towards a more open system that gives customers flexibility in their music software approach. As a result, Sony will be phasing out the CONNECTTM Music Service based on Sony’s ATRAC audio format in Europe. Specific timing will vary by region depending on market demand, but will not be before March 2008.
