All The Latest Cell Phone, Gadget and Tech News

Besides the Droid which is already shaping up to be one of the best Android phones manufactured so far, Verizon Wireless plans to launch another Motorola Android phone, the Calgary.

The Calgary will not match the Droid when it comes to features but unlike the Droid it will come with Motorola’s custom social networking UI, the MOTOBLUR. Other features will include a 3-megapixel camera, a 3.5mm jack, a full slide-out QWERTY keyboard and a generous touchscreen display. The Calgary is supposed to come before the end of the year and just after the Droid but we have no idea how much it will cost.

On a different note we can’t help but notice and admire Motorola. The company has three Android phones scheduled to arrive from two important U.S. carriers. And Sony Ericsson is rumored to launch the Xperia X10 Android phone only next year.

We have referred to it as the Sholes and the Tao but it looks like the first Android phone coming from Verizon will be called the Droid. And we’ll start straight with some bad news! The Droid will be a clean Android phone with no MOTOBLUR on top of it. Sadly, and for whatever reason, someone decided that the phone shouldn’t have Motorola’s highly customized social networking interface.

Here’s what specs you can expect from the Droid:

  • 3.7-inch screen
  • 854×480 WVGA capacitive screen
  • 5-megapixel camera
  • ARM Cortex 500MHz CPU
  • Facial recognition using the built-in camera
  • Custom Motorola Interface/UI
  • Available in black and titanium

And if you want a keyboard-less version of the Droid then you’re going to get one sometime in 2010. So what do you say? Anxious about any of these two Droid versions?

  • While we are patiently waiting for T-Mobile to announce Motorola’s first Android phone, the Cliq, Orange UK has gone ahead and announced the Cliq already. We were expecting this move, so it’s really no surprise there! Sure the phone will have a different name over there and you already know it: the DEXT.

The DEXT will be available at the beginning of October and those interested in purchasing it should know it will be available for free provided that you select a new 2-year contract of at least £34.26/month (that’s about $56.50). That monthly fee will get you 900 voice minutes, unlimited texting, data and Orange Maps support. Not a bad deal considering that you’d get to play with a brand new Android phone which comes with a load of social networking skills. So if you happen to live in the UK and you’re getting ready to snatch a DEXT, let us know how the phone is treating you!

The Cliq is an Android phone created by Motorola and it’s a T-Mobile exclusive. The phone will be available in time for the holidays and it’s going to be the first phone coming with social skills. We’ve just seen Motorola’s latest service, MOTOBLUR which will put to the test your networking skills!

The Cliq is a phone made for heavy texters. It has a generous screen and a full QWERTY keyboard. It will be available in Winter White and Titanium in the fourth quarter when it rolls out.

The Cliq will offer you 3G and WiFi connectivity, a 5-megapixel camera with 24fps video-recording, a 3.5mm headphone jack and of course, MOTOBLUR on top of Android. The phone will be available in Europe in 2010 as the DEXT from Orange while America Movil and Telefonica will also launch the device sometime next year.

    Motorola Introduces MOTOBLUR

So what is MOTOBLUR you might ask? Well it’s not a phone as you might initially think. It’s a new service, a new skin which will be able to handle all your social networking needs. Motorola’s own Sanjay Jha showed everyone that half of the US mobile traffic is going to social networking sites. That means Motorola’s future phones will cover that aspect extensively.

MOTOBLUR will be able to sync email, contacts, photos from any source and get it straight to your home screen immediately. Whether it’s coming from Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo, corporate email, MySpace, Gmail and more, you’ll never miss a thing with MOTOBLUR as the feature lets you manage your email addresses and social networking accounts. Or that’s what Motorola wants us to think.

So let’s check out some features:

    • Update social status on multiple social networks at once
    • Great visual experience
    • Check out friends’ status updates
    • Browse through messages in aggregated view or by account
    • Contacts’ status updates shown when receiving an incoming call
    • Remote delete in case phone gets stolen or lost
    • MOTOBLUR servers support

All we need now are some really hot Motorola phones to see these features of MOTOBLUR in action!
