All The Latest Cell Phone, Gadget and Tech News

On Monday we were hinted that Modu was gearing up to launch one or more of their handsets on the Israeli market at some point this week.

Well, it looks like that day has come as Modu has officially been launch on Israel’s Cellcom network. If you aren’t familiar with this handset it basically allows you to put a number of “jackets” on the phone thus changing its functionality and look. What you see above are the “jacket” options currently available.

You can head over to mobo to see how the phone is faring now that it has been released to market.

  • Remember that Modu phone concept we talked about a while ago? Well it seems that this do-it-yourself phone is finally going to be launched and Israel is going to be the first country where Modu cell phones will be sold.

It looks like Modu phones will be on sale on July 22 and it will cost around $130. For now only one Jacket will be available but we’re confident that more will follow if this goes well. What do you say? Would you get a Modu phone instead of a hot new smartphone?

  • What’s Modu you dare ask? Well it’s a modular handset jacket system which was unveiled sometime last year. How does it work? Well you basically have your Modu phone which can be inserted into different jackets. Imagine that your current phone case would come with buttons and a screen. Wouldn’t that be cool? That’s how a Modu jacket acts for a Modu phone!

It looks like these Modu phones will be available sometime soon in Southeast Asia. There are no precise release dates and we have no prices yet but we’ll keep you posted.

Modu might not be your favorite cell phone manufacturer but that might change soon. Modu is said to be working on a new handset ready to offer you touch support. We have absolutely no specs ready for you just yet and all we know for now is that this future Modu phone will be “iPhone like”. Is that the recipe for success? Will people buy a Modu phone just because it will resemble a hit phone? When will Modu launch the new touchscreen phone?

What do people look for in mobile phones today? The compactness and enhancements that they can do to them is certainly very important and the Modu seems to be satisfying both ends. The Modu mobile phone is a handset that can be moved from one Modu jacket to another depending on what type of functionality the user requires.

The Modu’s charm and versatility lays in the fact that the handset proper can be moved from one Modu Jacket to another depending on the type of functionality needed.

The heart of the magic lies in the tiny and light Modu phone unit, and while details are thin, we know it has been rebuilt to be tougher. Memory has been upped to 2GB, and is running a new UI.

Also launching are 4 jackets that Modu slips into:

  • Night jacket
  • Street-art jacket
  • Classic
  • Express
  • Each jacket (priced from $25 up to $100) can add features the Modu itself doesn’t have, like night imaging, stereo speakers, music functionality, gaming, or just about anything else you can dream up.

  • Play Dress-up With Modu

modu_logo.JPGYou know how little girls love playing dress-up with their dolls? This is pretty much like it, except it’s more high-tech. Modu, an Israeli start-up company, is prepping for the release of their first phone in the market also named Modu. The Modu phone in itself is smaller than the iPod Nano with a small color screen and a very limited keypad. But that’s the Modu’s selling point. You see, at its size and its weight of 1.5 ounces, the Modu is designed to be inserted inside “jackets.” Jackets are the outer part of the mobile phone which contains cell phone peripherals like cameras. In short, people will be able to sport a new look for their Modu every day if they want to. The company’s projection is that it will sell the Modu accompanied by two jackets for US$280, although the price will be subsidized to also zero with a two-year contract or so. What a fantastic idea! And with the degree of importance people seem to put into aesthetics nowadays, we won’t be surprised if the Modu turned out to be a hit.

The Modu’s expected launch date is on October 1, 2008 in Italy, Russia, and Israel.
