One of the most popular blogging websites on the internet - Wordpress - has announced that will present a mobile version of their website for cellphone & smartphone visitors.

There will be two mobile versions of wordpress

- The first is a modified version of the WPtouch theme and is suppose to be used by the most recent browsers/devices, like the iPhone and Android;
- The second version is suppose to be used by all the other devices, and is basically an improved theme of the old WordPress Mobile Edition;

If you visit the mobile version of WordPress and get the WPtouch version, you’ll have easy usability to access specific posts, pages, and archives, among other details like AJAX loading.

It seems like Apple started the run for app stores with the success of the iPhone apps, and after Google launching a store for the Wave, it is time for the Symbian Foundation to launch an application store named Symbian Horizon.

The plan for the store was announced on July 2009 and at this time Symbian has gathered over 50 applications, and they are helping developers by signing and submitting the software to target mobile application stores all around the world. At the moment there are 5 stores that support the Symbian Horizon: Ovi Store by Nokia, Samsung Applications Store, AT&T’s MEdia Mall, China Mobile’s Mobile Market, and Sony Ericsson’s PlayNow arena.

Lee Williams, Director of Symbian Foundation, comments:

We recognize that developers face many challenges in bringing their products to market on Symbian devices. In particular, the diversity of application stores in our ecosystem increases the burden on developers by requiring multiple submission and review processes. But this diversity can also offer an advantage over competitors’ closed systems, where applications sometimes receive arbitrary or commercially motivated rejections. Symbian Horizon retains this advantage while reducing the burden by becoming a conduit to multiple stores, helping developers reach the largest global mobile market in the world more efficiently.

Vonage has just announced today that their mobile app for the iPhone and BlackBerry is now available for download.

This app will allow users to make international calls over both WiFi and AT&T’s cellular network. Of course, you’re going to be paying for both AT&T minutes and Vonage’s rates if you don’t use over WiFi but by year’s end Vonage hopes to give those who subscribe to their $25 a month World plan unlimited calling as opposed to the current pay-per-go model.

Until now the mobile version of the popular Wall Street Journal has been free, but according to CEO Murdoch that might change in the upcoming months, and the plan is to charge $2 per week for everyone that wants to have access to the mobile version of the journal.

If paying $2 per week to read news on your mobile phone is not your cup of tea there are other options, such as paying for the print version which gives you a 50% discount for the mobile version.

According to Murdoch, this move is needed to increase revenue because ads aren’t paying as much as they did in the past.

Don’t get all too excited folks, nothing is official right now, but it looks like Big Red is getting ready to launch the Samsung Omnia II soon. As you can see on the Samsung Mobile USA website there’s a page dedicated to the Omnia II and Verizon’s logo is written all over it. The page doesn’t say much about the phone, but it does offer a sign up form for getting more details about the actual launch of the phone. What do you think guys? Google has been offering Adsense for use on mobile handsets for some time now but has generally left iPhone and Android application developers turning to services like AdMob.

Today, Google has launched a beta program for Adsense for Mobile Applications which will allow mobile developers to display adsense ads directly in the application of choice.

Since it’s only a beta, the program is currently only open to application developers.

With the LG Glance, it seems you either love or hate the gold toned woven metal design on the back, however it is generally agreed upon that the front is attractive and functional. The buttons are big and tactile, and for an entry-level phone, the QVGA (240 x 320) screen is pleasing. This phone is also amazingly thin at .38 inches. A noted difference between this and other candy bar style phones, is the placement of the clear button- it’s in the center, directly under the joystick.

Since this is an entry-level phone, there aren’t as many fancy Verizon gizmos to play with as found on higher-end LG phones, however it does feature Bluetooth 2.1, GPS, WAP 2.0 browser, microSD slot and a decent 1.3 megapixel camera with digital zoom. The current price of this handset is $49.99 after rebates and a 2-year contract.

Recently, Japanese cellular provider KDDI released a Sharp waterproof, solar-powered cell phone, rumored to be renamed the SH002. Growing interest in both photovoltaic power as a green and clean source of energy and solar-powered devices has encouraged Sharp to globally release its new LR0GC02 solar module for mobile devices.

The LR0GC02 solar panel uses compact semiconductor packaging technology, which aids in keeping the panel thickness to a mere 0.8 mm. Sharp claims this is the thinnest level in the industry. The solar cells in the module are based on polycrystalline silicon and produce a top power of 300 milliwatts (mW). As an supplemental power source for mobile devices, the panel is designed to help save energy.

Microsoft have brought out a new Facebook client for Windows Mobile phones, and you don’t have to wait for Windows Mobile 6.5 to use it. This free app works on any 6.0, 6.1 or 6.5 smartphone, touchscreen or non-touchscreen, and permits full messaging, photo and video uploads and integration with the handset’s phone features to make calls direct from Facebook profiles.

The Facebook client for Windows Mobile also allows you to amend and edit your profile as well as add status updates. Facebook already has a mobile version arranged for small smartphone and cellphone displays, but the functionality tends to be somewhat limited compared to the desktop interface.  This new application, which is an 871kb CAB file download, should make navigating the site more effortless for Windows Mobile users

Samsung has another phone in the oven. FCC has just approved its new Samsung SGH-T301G mobile phone. Actual specs for this device is not known yet. Even after scouring the internet, no info has come up. This could either be something big or just mediocre.

Anyway, we’ll keep you posted on any updates for this new device. As with its features, release and pricing for the SGH-T301G is also unknown.

Nokia wants to make their mobile games more popular, therefore they are holding a Mobile Games Innovation Challenge and the top 10 developers have been announced.

As it usually happens on this kind of contests, the creators of the 3 best game concepts will receive a contract to be released under the Nokia Publishing brand. On top of the glory and fame, there is money involved: first winner will go home with a cheque of €40,000, while the second place takes €20,000 and the last one receives €10,000.

So Firefox is coming to the mobile world. Sure it’s only the Alpha version and we might be in for a longer trip to the final mobile version. But that’s the way to go, baby steps.

What’s surprising is the device that’s going to get the Alpha. It’s not even a phone! It’s Nokia’s N810 open-source internet tablet which will receive the Alpha some time next week. Firefox Mobile is based on Firefox 3 and it will have the smart URL bar and support for various add-ons. Get ready to enjoy the Alpha! The Beta is arriving in 2009. As I said, baby steps!

It was only a few weeks ago when we heard that Mozilla will launch their Firefox Mobile browser sometime in 2010. We were rather surprised to hear that we’ll have to wait about two years to get a mobile version of one of the most popular Internet browsers created so far.

But it looks like those were only rumors. We have to trust John Lilly who is only the CEO of Mozilla, when he says that the Firefox Mobile Alpha is coming in a few weeks.

We want to make sure that the Web on mobile is more like the Web than what the mobile industry offers today, which is closed, separate networks and not a very good information-getting experience for the user. The first thing is to bring Firefox to mobile devices. We’re working on that, and we’ll see some alphas in a few weeks.
