Nokia Pulls Out of MWC

You can forget about seeing how Nokia fares in this year’s Mobile World Congress. The telecom giant has announced that Nokia will not take part this year, apparently tightening their belt in the midst of this financial crisis the world economy is in. Actually if you think about it, Nokia may not need to be there at all considering the popularity that they have among the leaders in the telecoms industry.

And while most consumers are sure to be disappointed, other companies like Samsung, LG Electronics and Sony Ericsson are apparently pleased of this development. Why? Well for one, they have lesser worries on competing for attention for their current mobile lineup, something that Nokia has been hogging through the years. If you want to sum it all up for Nokia’s adversaries, the time to shine is now!

  • We are all aware that Acer is one of the many companies planning to dip their hands in the telecom industry and apparently with this announcement, people who feel that they were just rumors may finally take Acer seriously. Mobile distributor Data Select and IT distributor Micro P will distribute Acer’s smartphones as the manufacturer attempts to break into the mobile handset market. Discussions with operators are still ongoing.

The manufacturer revealed four Windows Mobile handsets at Mobile World Congress this year in Barcelona named the M900, F900, X960, DX900. The handsets will come with the new Windows Mobile 6.5 software.

Acer bought fellow Taiwanese manufacturer E-TEN in March 2008 in a clear bid to go for the mobile phone market. There are 10 smartphones set for this year. Acer has already released prices of two low-end smart phones costing just €49 (£43). The handsets are codenamed the C1 and E1.

An undisclosed OEM company has reportedly signed a purchase agreement for its Coolteq™-l handset development platform, the first since the technology was announced at Mobile World Congress in February 2009.

Prior to purchasing the development platform, the OEM conducted an in-depth assessment of Nujira’s Coolteq technology; the results of this assessment matched Nujira’s own claims for the technology.

Commenting, Tim Haynes, Nujira CEO said, “This is the first time Coolteq-l has been independently assessed by a major handset OEM and we are delighted that our own measurements of the power consumption and bill of materials advantages have been confirmed by our customer. Since announcing our handset technology at MWC we have experienced enormous levels of interest from multiple areas of the handset supply chain including the OEMs themselves and expect other deals to soon follow.”

Nujira Coolteq-l enables the creation of an efficient wideband RF front end, covering three to five times the bandwidth of a standard design with up to double the efficiency. Only two PAs (power amplifiers) would be needed to design a front end covering all of the fourteen different frequency bands defined in the 3GPP for LTE and all of the operating modes (GSM, EDGE, WCDMA, HSUPA and LTE), compared with seven or more without Nujira’s solution thus achieving a significant reduction in the handset Bill of Materials.

It looks like Acer is looking beyond the standards Windows platform for its smartphones. Acer is planning to produce smartphones running on platforms besides Microsoft’s Windows Mobile OS by the end of the year, the company confirmed.

Acer representatives in Taipei, Taiwan, confirmed that they will launch handsets running on alternative platforms before the year is out, but declined to say which operating systems the phones would use. When Acer launched their lineup of smartphones at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February, company officials hinted that Acer was thinking of launching phones using Google’s Android platform.

All of Acer’s phones run on a widget-based version of Windows Mobile 6.1. Acer has said it plans on releasing phones later this year, most likely in the third or fourth quarter, running on Windows Mobile 6.5.

Spyker is best known as a Dutch manufacturer of racing cars. However, it looks like they have tried their luck in the mobile phone industry as they are set to unveil two mobile phones, the EG2000 and another slider-type phone.

The EG2000 showcases a slim and elegant candybar design that has a touchpad instead of a regular alphanumeric keypad. It also features a 2MP camera and a display that could be a QVGA one.

The second phone with a slider looks more of an entry-level phone. The phone has no touchpad for the operation and as for the actual model, nothing has been revealed as of now.

Once the Mobile World Congress 2009 gets underway, more detailed features should be released. For now we can just catch a glimpse of these Spyker phones and eagerly await what they have to offer.

One of the companies to watch at the coming Mobile World Congress has to be InnoPath. This early, word is out that they have a great software that can aid the customer service departments of companies, focusing on the proper handling of calls and limiting the call handling times. The software in focus is called ActiveCare.

ActiveCare represents a transition from point products with limited applicability to complete solutions and provides operators with an ‘active’ connection between the subscriber’s phone and frontline care. This reduces call handling times, increases first-call problem resolution, lowers operational expenses, and reduces churn by enhancing the end-user experience.

ActiveCare is applicable to both featurephone and smartphones using the InnoPath Smart Client or native clients installed on the phone at the factory. The solution builds upon the company’s 5+ years of experience in delivering MDM server and client products to Tier-1 operators and handset manufacturers.

Qualcomm has been reportedly convinced by modu, an Israeli based handset developer, to invest in a tiny modular mobile phone. The said phone is said to hold the Guinness World Record for the “lightest phone in the world”.

Modu has supposedly secured a US$7 million investment from the Qualcomm venture capital division. The concept is to have a core handset unit, which then slots inside user cases to change the design of the handset.

The company launched at last year’s Mobile World Congress, anticipating that the basic module plus two jackets would cost around US$200. The first music jacket was expected to be available towards the end of 2008, when modu’s mobile network operator partnerships become operational and modu devices are available to consumers.
