Vodafone is ready to up the ante when it comes to mobile broadband. The company will launch a new 14.4 Megabit mobile broadband service in the UK which is quite impressive, at least on paper. What that means for the average consumer is that the probable top speed will be somewhere around 10.8Mbps while the usual speed will average between 1Mbps to 4Mbps. The major cities and surrounding areas will be among the first to receive the new service although nationwide 14.4Mbps has been mentioned.

The ongoing partnership between Sprint and Best Buy now brings us a 99-cent HP Mini 110c netbook with the signing of a 2-year data contract.

However, as Engadget points out, for the $1,440 you’ll be paying over 2 years all you will be getting is a single 1.6GHz machine with 1GB of RAM and a 3-cell battery. Worth it? Probably not. Will unknowing consumers buy it? Of course.

As for me? I think I’ll be opting for Virgin’s pay-as-you-go USB broadband modem.

No word on when you’ll be able to pick this up or how the coverage will be but as always we’ll keep you posted.

Motorola has announced the availability of the H24, the latest addition to its Machine-to-Machine (M2M) solutions portfolio. The new HSPA wireless module was designed to meet the M2M industry’s growing need for high-speed 3.5G connectivity.

The HSPA series of modules is comprised of the H24-Global, providing tri-band HSPA connectivity (850/1900/2100MHz); H24-Single (2100MHz); and H24-NA (850/1700/1900MHz).

The new H24 module provides high-speed HSUPA/HSDPA connectivity (5.76 Mbps up / 7.2 Mbps down), enabling true mobile broadband for next generation M2M solutions like automotive infotainment systems, fixed-wireless terminals, telemetry, and advanced security systems featuring real-time video surveillance. The H24 also features enhanced robustness and on-board GPS capabilities making it the ideal solution for location-based applications. In addition, the H24 includes receiver diversity for optimal performance under harsh network conditions as well as FOTA (firmware over the air), to ensure maximum reliability.

The H24 is built in the same compact form factor as the rest of the Motorola “24″ family of wireless modules to provide flexibility with a single design solution. As the entire H24 series includes quad-band GSM/GPRS and EDGE connectivity, customers can easily add HSPA connectivity to their existing G24 GSM-based solution by integrating the H24.

Don’t be surprised if some time soon, mobile technology will be among the learning aids that children will be using.

Educators, policymakers and wireless industry leaders joined together last week at the Mobile Learning Conference 2009 in Washington, D.C. to discuss the promising future of educational technology in America and the key role the application of cellular technology and devices can play in helping kids learn in the classroom.

“Mobile broadband technology is increasing efficiency and productivity for businesses across the country, and this year’s Mobile Learning Conference strongly suggests that the same can be true for America’s schools,” said David Diggs, Executive Director of The Wireless Foundation, a MLC09 co-sponsor.

“Based on the constructive exchange of ideas at the conference, we anticipate a bright future for mobile learning as a means to better serve classrooms and communities throughout the U.S., and to give every American student all of the advantages we can in today’s increasingly competitive global economy.”

One initiative highlighted at MLC09 was Project K-Nect, a pilot project that used advanced mobile wireless technology to improve math skills among at-risk ninth grade students in select North Carolina schools. The project is supported by Qualcomm through its Wireless Reach initiative.

Motorola can now offer better end to end network solutions as it has commissioned Starent Networks to provide multimedia core networking solutions for use in its LTE (Long Term Evolution)/SAE (System Architecture Evolution) network offerings.

The incorporation of Starent Networks’ solutions into Motorola’s LTE portfolio allows Motorola to offer an end-to-end network solution for its operator customers. The Starent Networks products fulfill the functional requirements defined in the SAE or Evolved Packet Core (EPC) standards.

Additionally, the Starent Networks solutions are designed for a smooth migration to LTE for both CDMA 1X/DO-A and GSM/UMTS operators. Mobile operators are looking for solutions that deliver on today’s requirements for 3G mobile broadband, while also positioning them for a migration to mobile ultra broadband networks.

  • Remember the newly launched HP Mini 1000? Well now it comes with mobile broadband. You can choose either a Verizon Wireless EV-DO modem or an AT&T HSPA modem. The WWAN upgrade comes with a mandatory 1GB RAM and 60GB hard drive purchase. That means you’ll be paying $199 for the modem and $50 for the extra hardware. The total for the Mini 1000 with mobile broadband comes to $650. A little too much but that’s what you will have to pay to have that permanent Internet connection.
