It’s never to late to see a new MID in action. And today we have one from Mio supposed to run on Windows Mobile. The device will feature a great 800 x 480 screen, GPS, WiFi, USB out, a full QWERTY keyboard and a 667MHz ARM processor. The MID will come with Windows Mobile 6.1 inside but since this is just a prototype for now Mio could always postpone the actual launch until Microsoft decides to give us Windows Mobile 7. We have no launch date available yet and there’s no price tag for it yet.

It looks like Magellan has decided to sell their consumer products division to MiTAC. MiTAC is of course the owner of Mio. I guess they should be happy they purchased their rival. What will happen to Magellan’s GPS products? Time will tell! But for now Magellan is more popular than Mio despite it doesn’t necessarily offer better products. Either way, by January when the sale will be completed we will be able to tell you more.
Magellan Navigation, Inc. today announced it has entered into a definitive agreement to sell the Magellan consumer products division to MiTAC International Corp. Closing of the transaction is anticipated in January of 2009. Financial terms are not disclosed.
Recognized as an industry innovator, the Magellan consumer products division is the creator of the award-winning Magellan(R) RoadMate(R) and Maestro(TM) series portable car navigation systems, and the Magellan Triton(R) outdoor handheld navigation devices. The company is recognized worldwide through its Magellan brand.

It’s been a while since we saw anything new from Mio, but now we know what they have been up to. After making their mark in the GPS business, they now aim to get some market share in this cell phone crazy world with the Leap K1 and Leap G50. Like the nuvifone, both these Mio products are GPS centric, with a cell phone thrown in afterwards. Of the two, the Leap K1 is a bit different from your normal mobile. The Leap K1 features dual displays, one for each side of its body. A user-friendly interface dominates one side while the other side is wholly dedicated to GPS navigation. Other than that, both the Leap K1 and Leap G50 are similar in what they offer with a 2.8-inch TFT touchscreen with intuitive fingertip control, Bluetooth, MioMap 2008 interface with specialized navigation modes and preloaded POIs, a two megapixel camera, media player, and a 400Mhz processor for fast route calculations, all running on Windows Mobile 6.1. Both phones support GSM quad-band networks with speeds topping out at EDGE.
There is no information on pricing or availability yet, but stayed tuned and we will let you know.

Mio Technology announced its latest addition to the DigiWalker line-up of portable navigation devices. The new Mio DigiWalker C230, unveiled at the DigitalLife technology tradeshow in New York, is an upgrade to the C220 series and comes in a compact form-factor that is still affordable and comes with pre-loaded maps of the U.S. The C230 boasts text-to-speech directions, something that is hard to find at such a low price. For memory expansion, it presents an SD/MMC memory card slot.
The C2xx series has always been considered entry-level, but the C230, with its ability to speak actual street names, appears to be a nice addition to your gadget collection. There’s a backlight feature, as well as an updated anti-glare display that lets you see maps and menus even on in bright sunlight. Points-of-interest are aplenty with restaurants, hotels and gas stations. Voice guidance in 16 different languages (including English, French and Spanish) is available on the C230, and is powered by an SiRFstar III GPS chipset.
Measuring 3.54″ x 3.30″ x 0.94″, it weighs in at 144 grams (5.08 oz) and is priced at US $249.95. It will hit the markets in October.

The second device to hit the market is another widescreen device, the Mio DigiWalker C720t GPS (in pic). On top of what the C520 offers, this one comes with a 2MPx camera, business card scanner and the ability to import contact info and photo geotagging. This also sports an SD/MMC memory slot, and thanks to its TMC support, you can get real-time info on accidents, weather and more.

Aside from the C230 that Mio recently released, they also introduced the C620 and C620t which are GPS navigation systems that utilize MioMap 2008. These devices use the new version of the navigation software including the latest digital maps of TeleAtlas, with 3D models of certain buildings, landmarks, and more.
C620 and C620t will come equipped with a 4.3? touch screen and MioMap 2008 software which is equipped with a new user interface and a completely renewed main menu. The new software will also be able to split the screen in two to provide more information on the route, and will also let you control other functions of the device such as the MP3 player, and the contact book to let you scroll through your contacts. C620 and C620t will also let users plan their trip before departure but the details of this feature are unclear.
Different from C620, C620t will provide live traffic information. We have no info on availability or pricing just yet. Details should be more clear after IFA 2008 electronics show in Berlin which start on August 31st.
