  • For the people planning to travel a lot soon, here is portable device you may find handy to bring along. Garmin unveils two new GPS devices, both combining powerful tools of Garmin’s eTrex series with the touch-screen technology of the newer Oregon line, albeit on a slightly smaller screen.

The Dakota 10 will feature a glove-friendly 2.6-in color touchscreen and weigh 6.75 ounces, and will last approximately 20 hours on a single set of batteries while the Dakota 20 adds a 3-axis tilt-compensated compass, a barometric altimeter, wireless connectivity, and a microSD card slot.

Pre-orders are now being welcomed at GPS city for this device which is set to debut on July 26. Prices start from $200.

“It’s exciting to see Garmin bringing the technology they’ve advanced so well in the Oregon to a new more affordable price point,” remarked Brenton Wingard, vice president of GPS City. Dan Bartel, vice president of global sales for Garmin agreed, adding, “As families and friends explore the outdoors, Dakota helps keep their adventures affordable and enjoyable.”

  • Sprint Debuts Samsung S30

The Samsung S30 can now be purchased from Sprint at $450 but drops to $130 if the buyer would get it along with a two-year agreement and $100 mail-in rebate. This consumer-oriented smartphone offers a touchscreen, GPS, and wireless broadband.

The original Samsung Instinct was launched last year to be Sprint’s answer to the iPhone, but its marginal web browser hurt its ability to compete against Apple’s smartphone. The new s30 offers an improved web-browsing experience thanks to Opera Mini 4.2.

Sprint has tried to strike a balance between consumer and business functions. This model is able to synchronize with a Microsoft Exchange server for corporate email and calendar data, but also includes the popular games “Guitar Hero - World Tour” and “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader,” access to Sprint TV and Sprint Music, and connections to social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace, and YouTube.

Samsung built multimedia support into this device, including an MP3 and video player and a microSD card slot for storing up to 16 GB of songs and movies. A 2.0 MPx camera with video support is also included.
