Here is something useful to spur up the promotional efforts of companies. Called the iScratcher app for the iPhone or the iPod Touch, this app takes the concept of the usual scratch-to-win contests we often see for marketing and promotional contests where customers can possibly win a prize if they are lucky enough to scratch one via their mobile screens. The app is free and should be a great boost to the marketing and promotional efforts that companies can turn to, especially when it comes to contests, sweepstakes and giveaways.

I don’t even know how many times I’ve picked up the phone expecting to hear a human on the other end but was instead met with a robotic prerecorded voice. Just like everyone else I proceeded to hang up without listening to the voice for more than 2 seconds.

Luckily, the days of these robotic marketing calls are numbered as the Federal Trade Commission has recently announced that they will be made illegal and violators could face fines up to $16,000 per call. Below is a quote from FTC Chairman Jon Leibowitz:

Starting September 1, this bombardment of prerecorded pitches, senseless solicitations, and malicious marketing will be illegal. If consumers think they’re being harassed by robocallers, they need to let us know, and we will go after them.

Don’t get too excited yet as the ban doesn’t include prerecorded marketing calls from banks, politicians, charities or telephone companies. Bummer.

Here is something that should be entertaining for people traveling off to places where they are not familiar with. Called the InView mobile app for iPhones, this app plays some type of multi-media content relevant to where the person is somehow giving them an idea of what to expect. In case no content is assigned to that specific location, a general message is delivered.

Steve Gurley, Symon’s VP of Marketing and creative vision behind InView Mobile, put it this way: “An iPhone user can launch InView Mobile in a participating hotel and receive interactive information specific to that hotel. They can then go to a participating arena, launch InView Mobile again and automatically receive information about events playing in or coming to that arena. A user can even launch InView Mobile at work and receive real-time performance metrics related to their job.”

The InView Mobile app is now available at the Apple iTunes Store for free.

On whether the price discount for the iPhone 3G was made on purpose or not wouldn’t really matter for people. The purchase price now is all that matters and if you have been longing to get an iPhone for your own, I bet you would be wishing that you were in India right now.

Apparently, Telkomsel has announced a close to $96 discount off on 8GB and 16GB iPhone models in celebration of its 14th anniversary. But while that may seem logical, some critics are seeing it as a move to clean up their inventory and make way for the third generation iPhone.

But while you may be oozing at the price reductions, note that this is the second time that this telecommunications company has announced a price reduction for the iPhone. The first one was made last month. So if you consider the consumer relationship with the company, you may find it erratic and inconsistent. Who knows if next month another price reduction may take place?

Hence it all comes down to consistency. The early buyers in April thought they got a good deal. But the ones who passed are now exposed to something even better. In the end, the consistency of the copany is at stake. But then again, that is marketing for you and surely, a preparation for something new and perhaps even better.

The big question among Indonesian minds now is whether Telkomsel will offer the next iPhone model as soon as it is made available by Apple or whether they will make their customers wait several weeks to allow for the older iPhone 3G to fully run out.
