HTC to release Sense UI for Magic

HTC has recently announced that they will be porting their highly sought after Sense UI to their Magic handset this October. Unfortunately, those with the American version of the Magic (T-Mobile myTouch 3G) will not be getting the same love due to the “with Google” branding on the back.

The reason for this is that T-Mobile reportedly signed an agreement with Google regarding Android’s licensing that made it unlawful for them to adopt the Sense UI. Bummer.

HTC’s CEO Peter Chou has recently stepped forward to let us know that his company has officially sold over 1 million HTC Magics to date. If you’re scratching your head looking at the above device associated with the name Magic, it’s because branded it’s called the T-Mobile myTouch 3G in the United States.

Furthermore, Chou went on to say that HTC will focus their efforts on releasing more mid-range sub $300 smart phones onto the market for the rest of 2009. In fact, he hopes to have 50-60% of all of HTC’s handset shipments fall into the mid-range category.

How is this even possible? The Hero is probably the best Android phone coming from HTC and T-Mobile is not interested in launching it? According to T-Mobile’s CTO Cole Brodman T-Mobile “has no plans to bring the HTC Hero to market.” Sure it’s understandable that T-Mobile will want to sell the Magic aka myTouch 3G first but why not go for the Hero too? That statement was made during the myTouch 3G launch event and the message is pretty clear. There’s no room for interpretation here! No means no this time.

So now that the Magic is available for pre-order we have only one question left for T-Mobile: what carrier is going to launch the HTC Hero and who when will that happen?

We knew this was coming and it is now official. Well almost official since T-Mobile is yet to announce its availability dates and pricing. But according to these leaked shots, the myTouch 3G, or the HTC Magic, is going to be available from T-Mobile for $199.99 with a 2-year contract. Would you pay that much for the Magic or would you rather wait for the Hero to appear in stores?

If you’re already a postpaid or FlexPay customer you will be able to pre-order the Android phone and have it delivered to your door anytime from July 29 to August 3. Otherwise you’ll have to wait for the phone a few more days. So what do you think Android lovers? Is the Magic worthy of your attention at that price?

We have some good news for all those Canadians ready to get a new data plan from Rogers Wireless. There’s a catch however. You will have to get an Android-powered handset and the 6GB data plan is all yours. The new plan will cost you $30 per month but it’s certainly worth it. The HTC Dream or the Magic will be available on June 2nd from Roger Wireless so you won’t be waiting that long.

Okay so maybe the following handsets are not the all the phones Rogers Wireless will launch this summer but they will surely be among the most popular: the LG Rumor 2, Sony Ericsson C905 and Xperia X1, HTC Dream and Magic and the new iPhone. Here they are:

  • LG Rumor 2 (Solo Mobile) — ETA: May 25th, outright: $160.00, 2-year contract: $75.00
  • Sony Ericsson C905 — ETA: May 19th (delayed), outright: $449.99, 3-year contract: $249.99 ($299.99 without Rogers Vision)
  • HTC Dream — ETA: June 2nd (limited quantity, availability will increase by June 12th), outright: $649.99, 3-year contract: $199.99
  • HTC Magic — ETA: June 2nd, outright: $649.99, 3-year contract: $199.99
  • Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 — ETA: June 30th (barring additional delays), outright: TBD ($649 - $749), 3-year: $299.99 (will launch at $249.99)
  • iPhone — ETA: unknown (July/August), outright: not allowed, 3-year: TBD

Unfortunately there’s no clear indication as when will the new iPhone arrive. Rogers will probably launch it around the same time the AT&T will for a similar price. What phone would you choose?

We have some good news and bad news for all you Android lovers. It looks like the HTC Magic will support Exchange and that seems to be a proven fact. According to Google however it looks like Android will not be exactly support it. And that’s an official Google fact: “Android does not currently include support for Microsoft Exchange.” By the time the Magic arrives we hope that all that Exchange support will be clarified and supported by Google Android soon.

As we have suspected a while ago, T-Mobile has given an odd name to its future Android handset. The HTC Magic will be known as the MyTouch 3G in T-Mobile’s world. The new handset will be available in black, white and merlot. Besides the Magic, HTC will also bring the Touch Pro2 to T-Mobile so we’re looking at a hot T-Mobile summer. What will you choose between Android and Windows Mobile? Magic or Touch Pro2?

Vodafone Spain is the first carrier to launch the HTC Magic. The Android device is going to make its debut in Spain eight days before Vodafone UK will launch it. The handset will cost from 199 Euros, with a 21 Euros monthly plan, to 19 Euros, with a 62 Euros monthly plan. But now that you know Samsung’s I7500 is on the way will you hurry to buy the Magic or will you wait some more?

We thought Vodafone would be the first carrier to make the second Android-powered cell phone, HTC Magic, available in Europe on May 5, but it looks like TIM, a carrier in Italy, might be the first to do that by a mere 24 hours.  A quick call from the guys over at Technophone to the carrier revealed that the stores are already in stock and the handset has now appeared on TIM’s website; so a May 4th release doesn’t seem implausible.  The HTC Magic has already been blessed by the FCC, so we may not have to wait long before the handset starts popping up Stateside too.

  • We have more Cupcake talk and this time it’s coming from T-Mobile Germany. The carrier says that Cupcake is on track and it’s coming out in May. Given the fact that the HTC Magic is going to arrive on May 5th wearing that Cupcake, this isn’t exactly breaking news. However T-Mo Germany has also confirmed that the G1 will get Cupcake in May too. That Cupcake will bring lots of features to the Android world. You’re going to get on-screen keyboard, video recording, stereo Bluetooth support, Picasa and YouTube support and more.

    HTC Magic delayed?

If you’ve been anxiously awaiting the release of the HTC Magic, successor to the HTC Dream or T-Mobile G1, you are in for some potentially bad news.

Pocket-lint has recently recieved the following statement from HTC themselves:

“We are delighted with the interest that the HTC Magic has received since its launch with Vodafone at Mobile World Congress 2009. We are confident that Vodafone’s customers will be delighted with the HTC Magic in spite of a short delay due to a last minute hardware change”.

Don’t get too upset as this delay could mean only a few days added onto the release date considering the Vodaphone pre-order page still has it up for an April street date.

  • HTC G2 Gets the FCC Approval

That hot HTC G2 phone has been blessed with the FCC approval. The U.S. version of the Magic will come with 1700/2100MHz band of HSPA, WiFi with UMA for Hotspot@Home, a 5 megapixel camera instead of the previously announced 3.2 megapixel version and all the other specs we’ve seen in its Vodafone brethren. Don’t expect us to tell you when the G2 is actually coming or how much it’s going to cost as neither the FCC nor HTC have leaked any such details. Maybe the upcoming CTIA will reveal more info.

We already know about the other Android handset that’s on its way to China, and HTC is now following suit with the G2, more widely known as the HTC Magic with a few modifications to make it fit enough for China Mobile.  3G and WiFi are given a miss in this version and support for the country’s TD-SCDMA network is thrown in.  That’s not all that is changed as the user interface is also completely customized with Chinese language support and the brand name has also been changed to Dopod, a name much more popular than HTC in China.

The rest of the story is the same as any other Magic news we have got you lately, which means there’s no info on pricing or a release date.

  • Are you going to buy an HTC Magic first chance you get? Can’t wait for Vodafone or T-Mobile to bring it to your neighborhood? In that case you might enjoy the Magic manual which is already available for download. The manual has about 100 pages filled with details which will help you disassemble and assemble the phone. Information on how to re-flash the phone is also available so you’ll have your hands full until the phone will be actually released. Besides the Magic manual you’ll also find the HTC T8290/Quartz (in the picture) manual to download.

  • HTC to be Banned in Germany

If you’re in Germany and you love HTC phones you might be in trouble. It’s reported that HTC has lost a patent violation suit to IPCom GmbH. HTC is supposed to pay license fees for some UMTS patents used in Windows Mobile and Android handsets. According to German law, HTC infringed on “100 series” patents which were bought by OPCom from Robert Bosch GmbH in 2006.

What will HTC do? A settlement should be the most logical outcome. After all HTC won’t want to miss out on any potential market. Especially since T-Mobile is selling the G1 and HTC Magic is around the corner.

The Dream is about to be launched in France and Orange is the designated carrier. Starting March 5 the Dream will be available for €99 when purchased with a 2-year contract and the Origami Star Plus plan.

Do you actually fantasize aboutOrange offering you the HTC Magic instead? What if I told you Vodafone was bringing the Magic in France soon? Which HTC Android phone would you choose?

HTC Magic Spotted with the FCC

Is the HTC Magic coming via T-Mobile USA? Well besides Google telling us that, we now have FCC playing with the HTC Magic. However the Magic unit they doesn’t seem ready to support T-Mobile’s 1700MHz AWS band yet. That must only mean we’re expecting another HTC Magic version to arrive for the U.S. Android-friendly customers. Or is T-Mobile preparing a totally different HTC Android phone for later this year?

    via FCC

T-Mobile will bring a second Android phone to its subscribers later this year but is the HTC Magic we’ve seen over the pond at Vodafone’s going to be it? According to Google’s demo of Mobile Gmail in offline mode, the HTC Magic will wear the T-Mobile logo. If that’s what Google has shown us it must be close to real right?

The photo here is blurry but the T-Mobile logo is from the USA. It has one less dot left to the T than everywhere else in the world. There’s no good reason for T-Mobile not to launch the HTC Magic as the G2. Unless they have something even better up their sleeve.
