18 Nov 09 Nokia N900 Now Official in the USA

Nokia’s new Maemo toy, the N900, has been officially announced for the American public. We don’t have subsidized offers to show you yet as no carrier is willing to sell the phone at this point. The N900 will be available through Nokia’s flagship stores in New York and Chicago or online. The official price is $649 but for that price you’ll walk away with an unlocked N900 phone. What do you say? Do you love Maemo 5 so much that you’d be willing to pay so much cash for the phone? Or would you rather get an iPhone, a Droid or a Hero instead?

07 Oct 09 Nokia N900’s web browser shown off on video

If you were dying to know how Nokia’s N900 handled the web you can stop because a video has hit the web showing off the handset’s web browser.

This web browser is based on work done by Mozilla and I have to say it handles the web quite will with snappy response times, full Flash support and a control scheme similar to one we’ve all come to know and love with Apple’s iPhone.

Anyways, watch the video and let us know what you think of it in the comments.

29 Sep 09 More Details About Maemo 5 Revealed

So what’s Nokia’s Maemo 5 all about? The N900 Rover is not out so we can’t know for sure what the new mobile OS will have to offer. But as with most of today’s gadgets, facts have been leaked about Maemo 5 so here’s a brief description of what looks to be a pretty interesting alternative to Nokia’s other OS, the Symbian.

Maemo 5 will remind you of webOS since it uses a card-like view of what’s happening with your phone. The OS will support both GSM and VoIP calls and all those calls will be neatly logged which means you’ll be able to quickly call back your friends using your VoIP program of choice. When it comes to messaging capabilities, you can expect threaded SMS support but there’s no MMS availability. AT&T will certainly enjoy this feature or better said lack of it. As you can see the OS can still be improved as other issues have been spotted too. There’s no Google Calendar sync option, the mobile browser is slow and Flash support, although there, isn’t great. The Rover will slow down if you run too many apps so better shut a few of them down while you aren’t using them. The Map app will make you want to get Ovi Maps and the music player is limited in features.

There you have it folks, a hands-off sneak preview of Maemo 5. But we definitely expect you to tell us exactly how the phone performs for you in case you do decide to get an N900.

25 Aug 09 Nokia N900 rendered

Last week we brought you a preview of Nokia’s Maemo 5 powered N900, and now we bring you the first official press renders of the device.

If you’re just checking in, the N900 is said to feature a 3.5 inch screen, accelerometer, 5MP camera, 32GB of internal storage and GPS, among other things.

As for a release date, well, considering Nokia hasn’t even officially released the above image yet, I think it’s safe to say it’s still a ways off.

19 Aug 09 Maemo 5 Screenshots Appear Out of Nowhere

While we’re still waiting for Nokia to launch its Nokia N900 tablet we can’t but wonder how the new Maemo OS looks like. And we have some screenshots to play with while we’re waiting for the Rover to be unveiled. Maemo 5 is the next version we’re waiting for and, although it will not replace Symbian anytime soon, this new OS will power quite a few Nokia tablets and handsets in the near future. The screenshots look real enough and we’re hoping that the Linux-based OS is ready to fight against the hottest mobile mobile operating systems available so far. And Nokia should better leak some of those future Maemo-based smartphones.
