LTE is getting closer and closer and Samsung is getting ready for the new telecommunication standard. The Korean company has already developed another LTE USB modem and the FCC is currently reviewing it. Unfortunately we have no details about the device and we don’t even have a name for it. Listed as the A3LSLCU100, this LTE modem could be one of Kalmia’s brothers. No pictures of the devices are available at this point as Samsung has a 180 days confidentiality window that begun on September 24. That means we will be in for a long wait until we’re going to see the A3LSLCU100 in the flesh. Anyone excited about LTE yet?

There’s one more company interested in making Android phones, Japan’s Kyocera. The company plans to launch its first smartphone capable of running Google’s OS at some point in next year. And we definitely hope we’re going to see more than one Kyocera phone in 2010. Besides Android plans, Kyocera is also thinking about LTE. Its first dual CDMA/LTE phone is scheduled to arrive in 2011 but we don’t know what platform it will use. Can we assume it’s going to be an LTE Android phone?

LG working together with a wireless testing firm called Anite has completed the first LTE conformance test of LTE phones with both older networks and new LTE networks. The test is pretty important since it assesses how new handsets will handle in actual conditions where an user will be able to use both LTE and 3G services with a single LTE device. The testing also confirms that future LTE devices will work well with “older” 3G networks whenever LTE connectivity is not available. Now we’d just love to see some of those LTE devices out in the open. After all, they will work well on current 3G networks too! Right LG and Anite?

The fact that Big Red is investing in LTE technology is not news anymore. Verizon wants to launch the 4G network at some point next year and it’s currently testing and deploying it in various markets. The company will make LTE available in about 30 markets next year, while its entire CDMA footprint will get LTE in three years time. According to Verizon’s CTO, Tony Melone, the company wants to launch LTE in “as close to all-at-once as possible.” This will be possible by using part of the current CDMA infrastructure which should speed up the whole deployment process.
In case you’re scared that your current equipment will not function once LTE is deployed then I’m happy you need not worry. LTE and CDMA will work together so nobody will force you to ditch your favorite 3G device in favor of a brand new 4G gadget. Biut you’ll probably want to do that after you’ve seen the difference between LTE and 3G.

While AT&T is upgrading its 3G network to 7.2Mbps and while Rogers or T-Mobile are deploying 21Mbps HSPA+ networks, Huawei is working on something even bigger. It’s not LTE as you’d suspect is 56Mbps HSPA+ which should be available sometime next year in Beijing. The most interesting part is that Huawei is claiming that its partners will simply have to get a software upgrade in order to upgrade their networks. Could 56Mbps HSPA+ be that easy to deploy? That’s definitely a bold move from Huawei and its carrier partners should be very happy to hear such news. We’ll still want to see some more proof before we get too excited about such possibilities. Let’s see if other carriers, and I won’t name any names just yet, are going to be ready to offer similar theoretical speeds next year!

If you happen to live in Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, LA or Miami and you happen to be one of AT&T’s paying subscribers then you should be happy to know that AT&T is getting ready to bring your full HSPA 7.2Mbps to your neighborhood. You should expect the service to be available by the end of the year but unfortunately that “theoretical” 7.2Mbps speed will not be available any time soon. You’ll have to simply get used to “real-world downlink and uplink speeds” which will be “less than the theoretical peak and will vary based on a number of factors, including location, device, and overall traffic on the local wireless network at a given time.” By 2011 AT&T will about 90% of its current 3G network footprint will get HSPA 7.2 and maybe by that time we’ll actually be able to take advantage of the full download and upload speed.
In the mean time AT&T will also work on a bunch of other projects meant to enhance your whole wireless experience:
- An initiative to substantially expand the wireless spectrum serving 3G customers in hundreds of markets across the country, using high-quality 850 MHz spectrum. This additional spectrum expands overall network capacity and improves in-building reception. Deployments of this 850 MHz spectrum are about 90 percent complete today, with local roll-outs recently completed in New York, Atlanta and Houston.
- Addition of about 2,000 new cell sites to our network in 2009, expanding service to new cities and improving coverage in other areas.
- Enabling widespread access to our Wi-Fi network – the largest in the country with more than 20,000 hotspots in all 50 states – to qualifying customers, allowing them to take advantage of the best available AT&T mobile broadband connection.
- Preparation for field trials of 4G LTE wireless networks next year, with deployment planned to follow in 2011. This schedule aligns with industry expectations of when a wide variety of compatible 4G wireless devices will be available.
So what do you say? How’s your AT&T experience?

This was bound to happen sooner or later so we should be happy it happened a lot sooner than expected. Nokia has announced its first LTE Modem. The RD-3 is going to offer support for GSM/EDGE, WCDMA/HSPA and LTE bands so it will certainly be useful no matter what network you decide to use. We have no idea when and where this first Nokia LTE Internet modem will be available but it’s good to know Nokia is getting ready for the immediate future. Samsung, where’s your LTE modem?

LTE represents the near future of mobile telecommunications and everyone in the business is probably working on their own LTE-ready gadgets. But it’s Samsung the manufacturer that we’re going to talk about today. The company says it has the first commercial LTE modem for cell phones ready.
The modem, dubbed as the Kalmia for now, will get you download speeds of up to 100Mbps and upload speeds of 50Mbps within the 20MHz frequency band. Now we have to wait for Samsung to unveil its first phone ready to use this Kalmia LTE modem.

We already knew that Verizon will start LTE trials by the end of the year but we had no idea that Big Red was going to start testing from July. It looks like the company has completed the first tests on July 15 in Seattle while testing in Boston has just been finished.
Verizon used LG and Samsung LTE devices but we have no idea what handsets are capable of LTE connectivity right now. According to Verizon, Motorola is also working on LTE phones so the carrier should have quite a few phones ready for the new 4G network.
Boston and Seattle currently have ten LTE cell sites and Verizon reiterated its hope to launch LTE in as many as 30 markets next year. Curious about that LTE transfer speed? Verizon is saying that at launch we can expect 7-12Mbps download and 3.5Mbps upload speeds. So what do you think? Ready to switch carriers and try some LTE out?

Although a little late, it looks like Sprint’s WiMAX plans for 2009 have been leaked. The carrier should definitely be interested in launching its 4G network in as many markets as fast as possible. 2010 is almost here and we all know that’s the year when other carriers will embrace LTE as their chosen 4G technology. Verizon is rumored to be working hard on deploying its LTE network in the first quarter of 2010 therefore Sprint has to be working even harder to cover as much ground as possible. When the time comes to make a choice, what 4G network will you select? Is it going to be the already deployed WiMAX network from Sprint or the upcoming LTE networking coming from Verizon? Keep in mind that this roadmap hasn’t been confirmed so far by Sprint, so WiMAX might not be available in your region by the end of the year.

If you’re a Rogers Wireless subscriber then you should know that the carrier is getting ready to launch its impressive 21Mbps HSPA+ network. Rogers will increase download speeds starting this August in the Greater Toronto Area. Other cities in Canada will see similar speed bumps “quickly over the coming months.” While Canadians will enjoy this significant speed increase from 7.2Mbps to 21Mpbs, AT&T customers will have to wait some more until LTE will be available since AT&T will not be launching a HSPA+ network. So, Rogers customers, let us know how the upgrade is working out for you!

Verizon seems really eager to launch that LTE network! We’re not sure if the company will manage to roll it out in the first quarter of 2010 but Big Red is planning to launch trials in Seattle and Boston later this year. If everything goes well, and we hope it does, Verizon will launch the new 4G network in up to 30 markets in 2010. That’s not exactly nationwide but it’s a healthy start. By 2013 Verizon plans to have 100 points of presence by 2013. Whether the whole LTE rush is related to Apple’s future tablet or not remains to be established later on. In the mean time, if you live in Boston or Seattle and if you’re a Verizon customer, then you might enjoy some LTE action later this year!

As you’ve already read earlier today, Apple’s tablet is apparently set to be unveiled sometime early next year and the designated carrier to offer it at subsidized prices seems to be Verizon. On the other hand we already know that Verizon plans to launch its LTE network next year. Now, following the logical process of human thinking it would be only natural for Verizon to want to offer LTE connectivity to those new Apple tablet customers. And apparently that’s exactly what Verizon is thinking. Word on the street is that Big Red wants to have its LTE network in place and working in the first quarter of the year. That’s exactly when Apple should announce its iPhone-like tablet. But let’s stop the rumor mill for a while and wait for some official confirmation for all of these. What about you? Getting anxious to play with the first Apple tablet?

LG is taking LTE seriously. We’ve shown you an LG LTE modem a while ago and now we hear that the FCC has just approved the M13 which is a “cellular/PCS CDMA/EVDO and 700MHz LTE Device”.
What is this device exactly? Is it a phone? Is it a modem? Whatever it is, it’s going to work with current 3G CDMA networks and with future 4G LTE networks which should be available starting next year. The device will be perfect for both Verizon and Sprint and we should assume that they will probably announce it sometime in the future.
One thing is clear though, we should expect more 3G/4G hybrid devices to arrive soon as LTE and WiMAX networks are going to be available to the public in the near future.

Nokia Siemens is getting ready to pay $650 million to Nortel for all the LTE and CDMA assets of it. Nortel has been going through some tough times and consequently it filed for bankruptcy back in January 2009. That’s how Nokia Siemens ended up purchasing that huge LTE and CDMA chunk of Nortel which should come in handy some time in the future especially since Nokia is interested in strengthening its North American presence. The purchase should be completed by the third quarter of the year as soon as the US bankruptcy court and the Ontario Superior Court of Justice will approve it.

Now that the iPhone 3G S has been out for a full day people are turning in all sorts of reports. Especially since the new phone is close enough to what everyone wanted since the first generation iPhone. One of the improvements of the 3G S is supposed to be the 3G connectivity. The iPhone 3G S could, at least on paper, use that 7.2Mbps 3G speed but it looks like it doesn’t really do that. First of all, AT&T is still working on upgrading its network to 7.2Mbps, and, unless you live in Chicago, you won’t be getting speeds anywhere near that. As you can see from the test screenshot above, the 3G S is indeed faster but the added speed isn’t significant. In fact it’s all thanks to the new processor of the phone. In other words, you’ll still have to wait for a faster 3G connectivity so better postpone upgrading to iPhone 3G S if all you want is just faster download and upload speeds. Maybe next year when Apple will launch the iPhone LTE, AT&T/Verizon customers will be able to surf the Internet on the go at speeds of 7.2Mbps and beyond.

The future of mobile communications is LTE but it’s going to be a while until we will be able to enjoy it. In the mean time the major carriers and cell phone manufacturers are working on the proper equipment and the necessary network upgrades. LG is one of them and the company has just showed the first LTE USB modem to the world at CommunicAsia 2009. The modem will offer speeds of up to 100Mbps which is impressive for a mobile network.
We can expect the modem in stores some time next year but not sooner. LTE networks will be available to the public by next year so we can only assume LG will start selling proper equipment by then. We have no confirmation so far and there’s no pricing for this modem prototype yet.

While Telus is busy in Canada with its future HSDPA network, Verizon Wireless is developing its future LTE network. In fact, Verizon’s President and CEO Lowell McAdam said that the future 4G network will be launched officially in around 20 to 30 US markets during “the second half of 2010.” The first trials will start this year so lucky testers will be able to get their hands on some LTE action soon.
If that doesn’t sound awfully good so far you’ll also have to know that Verizon’s LTE network “nationwide buildout would be complete in late 2013 to early 2014,” which seems a long time to go from now.

Verizon Wireless is looking towards the future and the futures seems to have LTE and CDMA all over it. According to Verizon’s CTO Tony Melone the company is working hard on its 700MHz LTE. Phase four trials are scheduled in selected markets for the end of 2009. By 2010 the 4G network will be available for all of us and it will grow rapidly in the following years. Verizon’s CDMA network will stay in place at least until 2018 or 2020. The EV-DO network however will be replaced a lot faster by the new LTE network.
If all that wasn’t good news then here’s something else for you: Verizon will lower data services in the near future. Melone said that “pricing is inhibiting the growth of this market. Quite frankly, this is likely to change even before LTE.” We have no specifics yet but we’ll be back with all the numbers once Verizon will announce them.

Verizon is talking more and more about its future LTE network and it should be since it’s scheduled to be ready by next year. The company has released the first specs of the new network just so all the manufacturers get an idea on what they’re getting into. The network will start as a data-only network and devices won’t be required to support any CDMA in that first phase. Testing should start this year and Verizon wants to have fully working phones ready to test it by that time. What do you think?
