HTC Firestone Makes an Appearance

The HTC Firestone is a Windows Mobile handset not officially launched yet. The phone has been just leaked and considering that HTC is hosting the Come See event tomorrow in London, we might see it arrive sooner than expected. Along with the picture above, which could be just a Photoshop job, we have some matching features:

  • GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900, UMTS 900/2100, HSDPA
  • Windows Mobile 6.5
  • 3.6-inch WVGA touchscreen transflective TFT display, 65536 colors (boo)
  • 600Mhz Qualcomm 8250 processor
  • 256MB RAM and 512 MB ROM
  • MicroSD expansion
  • Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR
  • 802.11b/g
  • AGPS
  • G Sensor
  • 3.5mm audio jack
  • 8 megapixel camera

The phone is rumored to be available this August but we have no official confirmation. And we’ll have to wait a while for some pricing details too.

June 19 is not only the date when the iPhone 3G S will finally be available in shops but it’s also the date when the N97 and the N86 will be available in London. Or so it would seem considering that there are reports saying that the phone will be available in London’s flagship store this Friday. What phone do you expect to sell in more units this weekend in the UK? The N86 or the new iPhone? We kinda feel bad for Nokia given the release dates it has chosen for the N97 and the N86. On the other hand Nokia doesn’t seem to have immediate plans for the worldwide release of the N86. Is it waiting for the iPhone to arrive in those other countries too before it will start selling the N86?

This is at least weird but it could be quite useful in various situations. If you need to report a crime but calling the police is not an option just yet, then simply send an SMS to the police in London. The perpetrator will not know what you are doing and the police will arrive to the scene of the crime.

So if you’re in London, add this number to your contacts list: 07940 500 500. That’s the Metropolitan Police Service number for answering to crimes reported via SMS.

We’re already allowed to wirelessly surf the Internet while flying towards our next destination and it looks like in-flight cell phone use will be the next big thing. British Airways has announced that customers flying from London to JFK will be allowed to send text messages and go online from their cell phones. Actual phone calls aren’t allowed yet but that’s the direction we’re heading. The trial will start this fall on business-class only flights.

Other airlines also offer similar services. bmi and Quantas allow cell phone usage for domestic flights while the Emirates allow mobile voice calls on domestic flights.
