  • AT&T is apparently going to launch a smartbook soon. The device is made by Lenovo and it’s going to sport a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. There are no specs available at this point as the smartbook in question has been showcased by CEO Paul Jacobs during an investor meeting in New York. Neither Lenovo nor AT&T cared to comment on the device but we’re probably going to see the smartbook at CES 2010 in just under two months from now.

The question is do we really need smartbooks too? We have smartphones, there are plenty of netbooks to go around and let’s not forget that the tablets are coming. What do you say?

  • Lenovo is the new company in the block betting on the multi-touch technology: meaning that it can recognize 2 fingers on the touchscreen. This feature has been added to 2 models: ThinkPad T400s and X200 Tablet.

To make usability better and easier, the laptops come with special software named SimpleTap so you can easily access the most common functions: volume, turn on/off, etc. Technically speaking the T400s boasts a 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo processor + 120GB on the hard-drive + 2GB of memory RAM, and a DVD burner which makes the price tag close to $2.000. As for the X200 Tablet, it is a bit cheaper and not so powerful, for $1,650 you get a 12–inch touchscreen, a 1.4GHz Core 2 Duo processor, 1GB of RAM and 160GB of storage capacity.

Early 2009 didn’t work for the Ophone release and seems like May 17th didn’t cut it either.  The news now points to a release next month, which we will settle on for now until they decide on an another day or just launch it already.  What’s more, HTC has now combined forces with Lenovo to release the Chinese version of the Android-powered HTC Magic on China Mobile’s network, and this will be called the Ophone instead of the Lenovo handset we saw earlier.  When and if launched in June, the Ophone will go for a hefty 5000 yuan (about $730), which sounds a lot more expensive than the actual HTC Magic.  Anyways, with the iPhone also in line to enter the Chinese market during the same timeframe, June is turning out to be a fine month for the Chinese.

  • Laptop and notebook users can say goodbye to the usual plug or recharge batteries one at a time concept. Thanks to Datamation Systems, a new multi-bay battery charger can now re-charge 16 laptop batteries at a time. Batteries used for laptops and tablets no longer have to worry about recharging issues. Spare batteries can be charged even while they are being used simultaneously.

Among the laptops and notebooks that have been designed specially modeled multi-bay chargers include that of the Dell Latitude 2100 and the Lenovo IdeaPad S9/S10.

“Classroom users cannot afford to have students run out of power during the day,” said Joe Mazza, Datamation Systems Vice President. “Extra batteries, charged and ready, let teachers and students count on uninterrupted use, especially in a wireless environment.”

With that said, say goodbye to the worries of laptops needing to be plugged in to recharge or worry about laptop use limitations. Spare batteries can be recharged while you are using another one for the meantime, a definite plus for people who use laptops and tablets heavily for education or even business.

Remember the Lenovo Ophone that was supposed to land in China last quarter and didn’t?  Looks it wasn’t really buried deep and the Android-powered smartphone is getting ready for a release on the 17th of this month, a good day to do it since it is the World Communications Day.  Seen as a direct competitor to the millions of iPhones that have already found their way unofficially to China, the Lenovo Ophone will support 3G, GSM, and LTE-based 4G networks along with China’s own TD-SCDMA system.  China Mobile will also provide a host of services to its customers including search and on-demand TV services.  All this sounds fine, but with the Chinese people being so in love with the iPhone, it remains to be seen if the Ophone will really make a difference or not. • Lenovo unveils a new netbook for mobile computing consumers in the IdeaPad S10-2 netbook. The new IdeaPad S10-2 netbook gives consumers even cooler netbook features – models with 3G connectivity, the rich sound of Dolby headphone technology for music and movies and long battery life. Lenovo also made the IdeaPad S10-2 netbook thinner and lighter than the previous IdeaPad S10 netbook, and packaged the netbook in an expressive, colorful new ring pattern design.

“With the netbook scene rapidly changing, consumers are telling us they want to merge the capabilities of their most commonly used sources of electronic entertainment, such as digital photographs, online TV, music and social networks all into one portable and affordable device,” said Dion Weisler, vice president, Business Operations, Idea Product Group, Lenovo. “We’ve incorporated that feedback into our new IdeaPad S10-2 netbook, giving consumers around the world more ways to connect with options for wireless connectivity, a more portable and expressive design and entertainment-packed features.”

The IdeaPad S10-2 netbook will be available beginning at the end of May on www.lenovo.com and through business partners beginning at the end of June. Models start at $349.

Lenovo and RIM’s Constant Connect is now finally available. What will Constant Connect do for you? It will let your ThinkPad get your BlackBerry emails whenever the two devices are within a certain range of each other. What’s even more interesting is that the technology behind this product will let your laptop get those emails even when the laptop is turned off. Unfortunately this product will only appeal to those customers that own both a RIM BlackBerry and a ThinkPad laptop but the whole concept is pretty darn interesting. Constant Connect will be available for $149 so go ahead and grab it if it looks interesting to you.

Due to a potential shock hazard, Lenovo has been forced to announce a recall on its ThinkVision Speakers AC Adaptor. The plastic shell of the AC Adaptor can crack, posing a risk of electric shock to consumers.

Lenovo sold the AC Adaptors as part of the ThinkVision Soundbar option. The FRU part number 89P8571 with date code 200810 is located on the back of the adaptor.

Lenovo’s Web sites, telephone and direct sales, and Lenovo authorized distributors nationwide from October 2008 through January 2009, as an accessory for about $30. Consumers should stop using the recalled AC Adaptor and contact Lenovo to receive a free replacement part.
