Augmented reality is a wonderful thing, and Layar has figured out another use for it: tracking government bailout money. Yes, this new app for Android and iPhone 3GS allows a user to view recovery.gov contract dollars where they are actually being used. As you can see, there are a gratuitous amounts of blue circles around Washington D.C.. My my my, isn’t that just sad.

This is not the first time you hear us talking about augmented reality and it surely won’t be the last time that we will mention it.

And now you’ll be able to try augmented reality for yourself if you happen to have an iPhone ready. The Layar augmented reality browser is now available in the App Store and it’s ready to offer you a different perspective on reality. The app uses the iPhone’s camera in order to overlay data on various points of interest. That way you’ll be able to get a lot of information on various attractions around you.

The application is available for free right now but if it becomes popular then a premium, read not free version, will also be developed. Layar works with various third party developers to offer you a lot of new layers. These layers will let offer you lots of details about restaurant, shops, train and bus schedules and more. You’ll just have to install the browser on your iPhone in order to enjoy all that augmented reality!
