All The Latest Cell Phone, Gadget and Tech News

It’s not every day that we hear about new Linux phones so we definitely should check them out. Panasonic and NEC seem not to care about Android, Windows Mobile or Symbian OS that much. They seem to prefer LiMo instead. In fact they love it so much that they have announced a daring project which involves creating nine new Linux phones. KDDI and Immersion Corp will work on those phones but LiMo is also hoping for other important manufacturers to be impressed by the initiative. What about you? Would you buy a cheaper touchscreen smartphone running on Linux? Can’t wait to see when these new phones will be officially unveiled.

WiFi-Enabled MicroSD Cards Anyone?

Does your phone come with WiFi support or you’re waiting for a good excuse to get a WiFi-enabled phone? Well we’ve found an alternative solution for you, a WiFi-enabled microSD card. The card has been developed by the KDDI Corp and it can offer you instant WiFi access to any phone that comes with microSD support. The card has an 802.11b/g antenna that will do all the work for you. It won’t only work with phones but with laptops and other gadgets that can handle a microSD card and a WiFi connection. I bet you weren’t expecting this were you? It looks like Japanese customers are downloading lots and lots of porn using their 3G connection. And you know what happens when too many people are downloading too much stuff over a 3G network? The 3G networks get overwhelmed while the porn industry is flourishing. It looks like KDDI and DoCoMo have too many porn-loving smartphone owners that would be ready to pay up to $105 to access their favorite sites from their mobile phone or laptop. Are we to expect the same phenomenon to occur in other markets as soon as people start getting more and more data plans and new smartphones?

    Sharp LR0GC02 Solar Panel

Recently, Japanese cellular provider KDDI released a Sharp waterproof, solar-powered cell phone, rumored to be renamed the SH002. Growing interest in both photovoltaic power as a green and clean source of energy and solar-powered devices has encouraged Sharp to globally release its new LR0GC02 solar module for mobile devices.

The LR0GC02 solar panel uses compact semiconductor packaging technology, which aids in keeping the panel thickness to a mere 0.8 mm. Sharp claims this is the thinnest level in the industry. The solar cells in the module are based on polycrystalline silicon and produce a top power of 300 milliwatts (mW). As an supplemental power source for mobile devices, the panel is designed to help save energy.

  • The device in the picture is more special than others. It is water-resistant and solar-powerd and it will arrive in Japan this June from KDDI. Sharp is the maker and we might expect it to make similar phones in the near future.

KDDI says that as little as 10 minutes of sun absorption will get you two hours of standby or about a minute of talk time. So what would exactly happen at night? No more phone calls? The sun can charge the 80% of the battery which sounds pretty good. That’s a great device for those people that always forget their chargers. All they would need will be some decent sunlight.

How much would you pay for such a phone? Prices and availability dates haven’t been officially announced yet.

  • The Sony Ericsson Premier 3 Walkman phone in the picture here looks weird, but in a good way. It will be launched by KDDI in Japan this spring and it will feature a 3-inch display, a 3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, GPS, infrared and even a remote control. The microSD slot will let you upgrade the existing 50MB of storage space on board of the Premier 3 up to 2GB, which is nearly not enough. Especially since you’re going to want to listen to lots of music and play lots of videos. However there is a cool feature for this Walkman phone. It can rip music from a CD. Just plug the player into the remote via a 3.5mm plug and the rest is easy to do.

As for the phone features, the SH-001 comes with Global Passport CDMA support and in order to improve your phone call experience there are various features like noise-canceling, Talk Slow and Clear Voice. The clamshell phone will be available in Japan only for now, and we have no idea if it will be ever land in other markets. No news on arrival dates and prices either!

  • Quite a bunch of KDDI phones are going to arrive soon. And they’ll sport 8.1 megapixel cameras, WVGA displays, one-seg TV tuners and much more. But Hitachi’s Wooo H001 is particularly interesting. It has a dual-hinge flip mechanism and most importantly a stereoscopic IPS display which is supposed to offer you 3D images while you play with the UI or watch mobile TV. The Wooo H001 will arrive in April and so will those others KDDI phones. Prices are still unknown and you’ll have to go to Japan to get one.

The handphone Toshiba W61T was designed with the sporty people in mind. The model is included in the 2008 line of phones by KDDI Japan. The Toshiba W61T has the AU Smart Sports function which could monitor your workout or serve as a pacemaker. The 50 x 98 x 18.9 mm handset features 2.8-inch QVGA OLED screen, 3.24 megapixel CMOS camera, microSD slot capacity of up to 2GB, high-quality VGA movie recording capacity, FM radion, and USB functionality among others.
