Those currently residing in Korea looking for an eBook reader that looks exactly like the Kindle 2 but, well, isn’t the Kindle 2 should check out iriver’s Story e-reader.

This 6-inch, QWERTY keyboard touting eBook reader has recently went up for pre-order over in Korea for 358,000 KRW (~$290). Other incentives to buy the e-reader include a 2GB SD card, a case and 2 free eBook downloads.

Unfortunately there is no work on when, if ever, this thing will be made available in the States.

We have a new trial for you and this time it involves Tsera which claims that it has invented the touchpad and hence everyone else using it will have to pay for the privilege. Tsera says that Apple, Microsoft, LG, Philips, Bang & Olufsen, iriver, Coby, Cowon and Meizu are all in violation of a patent owned by the company. The patent is called “Methods and apparatus for controlling a portable electronic device using a touchpad.” And nobody has paid any money to Tsera for using the technology. Given the big names involved in this huge trial we should expect Tsera to walk away with lots of settlements cash in its pocket.

iriver P35 PMP

iRiver’s P35 PMP has been upgraded to include a welcome 32GB top-spec version. This touchscreen PMP, which is presently only available in Korea and is scheduled to arrive in the US this fall, has a 4.3-inch WQVGA display and a microSD slot for up to 16GB cards.

The Korean version includes an optional DMB digital TV tuner, a feature which is not likely to be part of the US model.  In all likelihood, iriver will use the mid-range WiFi-enabled version of the P35, which includes internet browser and the company’s “Magazine” UI. The 32GB iriver P35 retails for 488,000 South Korean won ($389).  No word on what the PMP will be priced once it reaches the US.

    iRiver T5 and T6 MP3 Players

iRiver has presented two new MP3 players and we’re not talking about the recent E50, nor the CaroNavi. The new audio players are codenamed T5 and T6, and are as simple as it can get, which means they are pretty basic.

T5 - supports MP3, WMA, and Vorbis playback. It has a battery life of 13 hours in non-stop mode, comes with a USB plug, and will become available in two versions: 2GB and 4GB.

T6 - pretty much the same as T5 but with a few improved features, like the inclusion of FM radio, and a battery life of 28 hours.

Iriver has presented a new PNS - Portable Navigation System - known as CaroNavi. It will be released on the Japanese market next week, on December 19th, with a price tag of €250 which is close to $320.

In terms of specifications, the CaroNavi uses MapPlus software made by Edia, and is compatible with audio + video files, such as WMV for videos, and MP3, WMA, or OGG for audio. The LCD touchscren on the CaroNavi measures 3.5-inches and provides a resolution of 320×240 pixels, while the internal flash memory has 2GB of storage, but it can be expanded thanks to the slot for SD memory cards. Since this is a Portable Navigation System, it must be light and that is why it only weights 137 grams.

Here’s an interesting touchscreen phone from iRiver. It’s not the PMP we’ve gotten used to but it’s a totally new concept. Showed first at CES 2008 last January, the phone was picked up by Korean carrier KT and it has received a launch date, March 9th of next year.

The phone is practically a PMP with phone functionality and we’re going to see it in store’s as iRiver’s wave. The wave will get you a 3 inch touchscreen, WiFi and possibly 3G support, FM radio, PMP features and even an e-dictionary. The wave comes with 4GB of internal storage space which is upgradable via miniSD cards.

OK then, we need some prices and some official release dates for European and American markets.

Recall the iRiver NV that we mentioned one year ago? It was a beast when it came out, sporting a GPS function, being a portable media player, having a digital media broadcasting feature, and a FM tuner. If you enjoyed the NV, get ready for its smaller brother named iRiver NV Mini.

The main difference is really the size, because the rest of the features are almost all the same. With that being said, the NV Mini has a smaller 3.5-inch screen, which is exactly half the size of the iRiver NV. In terms of the GPS navigation, the system uses software and maps made in Korea by Gini, and it is all included in a SD memory card of 4GB.

  • The iRiver SPINN Portable Media Player

iRiver%20Spinn.jpgIn some more post-CES news, iRiver has showcased their new portable media player, iRiver SPINN. The amazingly sleek design made me think of James Bond in a heartbeat. And yet, unlike some which has form yet lacks substance, it seems the SPINN has both. It features a 3.2-in. touch screen where you can watch clips, view images and choose tracks to play. If, for some reason, you have an aversion against touch screens, there’s always the little analog knob controller for you to use. It also features Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity with a microphone and is available in 4GB, 8GB and 16GB variants. No price or release date yet but I bet Bond could get one if he wants to. Lucky bastard.
